Picked this up at the Charleston Beer Exchange fresh off the truck. I like Southern Tier and this had a rather stand-out, Al Gore approved eco-packaging. Let's go!
A. Dumped into my Sam Adams glass, a white head foams up briefly before dwindling to nothing in about 20 seconds. Pity. And this sure is pale... looks more like a pils than a wheat. Totally clear and pale yellow. For a wheat beer, there should be some retention and some lace, alas, there is neither here.
S. Yup, pretty pale... hints of wheat swirl around a pretty solid, if minimal, honey and light grain backbone.
T. Pretty... basic. A very light, mildly wheat-flavored, grainy pale. Honey, hop bitterness, not-quite-clean malt bill, fizzy and sweet. A fine beer, but a boring, simple beer, and one that holds very little for the craft beer geek.
M. Watery, thin, sweet with a very mild bitter tang. There frankly isn't a lot here.
D. Yeah, I did. You can to.
422 is rather surprising in how basic and un-craft like it is. Don't get me wrong, you can enjoy this, but I really don't know why I'd buy it again when Southern Tier's own IPA is around the same price and so much more pleasing. This is a good gateway beer, but a little tough to recommend even so. Give it a go yourself and make up your own mind.
