Older bottle, unsure of age however. 2010 or 2011 most likely.
A: Pours a very dark brown but not quite black. Big frothy light brown head. Head fades out at a moderate pace. Minimal but thick little tufts of lacing. Great head retention.
S: Big, big sweet chocolate notes. There's some rich coffee in here but it's mostly buried under the sugary sweet chocolate - probably faded from age I'm guessing. Blackwater beers tend to be extremely sweet so I'm doubting it's faded THAT much either, probably just bludgeoned into submission by the sugar content. Honestly a delicious aroma, reminds me of taza coffee chocolate discs in a way. Only sweeter. A lot sweeter. Did I mention it's sweet?
T: Huh, funny. Not nearly as sweet as the aroma betrays. Still sweet but more of a bitter coffee and bittersweet chocolate flavor. Very mocha-like for sure. Lots of black patent malt, bunches of burnt barley amongst the chocolate and coffee. Surprisingly bitter in the finish and lingering aftertaste to boot.
M: Thick and viscous.
O: Interesting, very sweet aroma but much milder body. Not sure if age has mellowed the sweetness a bit. Lots and lots of bittersweet coffee, chocolate and burnt malt. Heavy body to boot. I think this might be better fresher, it's a bit muddled at this point. Still good, just not what I expect from a big Southern Tier stout.
