Opened on Xmas Day, had aged this for a year or two but couldn’t find a batch date. Into a tulip glass this poured a thick oily black colour, with a slight whispy head, great lacing. 4.25
S – super rich, creamy chocolate, smooth coffee, cinnamon and vanilla, honey biscuits, soft chocolatey sweetness to it, a light bitterness, reminiscent of those chocolate swirl cookie sticks, only slight hints of warming alcohol mixed in nicely with the coffee, amazing. 4.5
T – soft creamy chocolate, then more of a coffee character through the body, cocoa powder, hints of chocolate chili spice, creamy vanilla really comes through, lots of dark and milk chocolate, subtle caramel. Finish is full, mildly spicy, and dries out a bit leaving a complex mocha aftertaste with a hint of spice. 4.5
M – Probably the creamiest IS I can remember having, this is an absolutely delicious dessert beer, big big body to it, but so smooth riding on waves of chocolate and coffee. Light/moderate carbnation, works perfectly with the bitterness to cut through some of the sweetness and alcohol. 4.75
This is a remarkable beer, just amazing complexity with a mélange of balanced coffee and chocolate character. (I found the chocolate was more dominant flavor wise, but the coffee contributed a lot to the feel). It would be interesting to play around with the proportions for curiosity sake, but I think ST has pretty well nailed it here. Wouldn’t change anything with this, it’s a magical combination and works very nicely. 4.5
