From a 22oz bottle into GLBC snifter. From the bottle: “DOB 5/26/11″.
Appearance: Very dark brown to black, with only a small amber glow when held to light. Lots of apparent carbonation on initial pour; wondering if this is an older bottle that didn’t age well. Carbonation thankfully calms down swiftly. Head is appropriately mocha tan, though only covers half the surface, unevenly. Disappears completely midway through the drink. No lacing. 3.25/5
Smell: Immediate assault of coffee and especially chocolate that easily breaks through my waning cold. Espresso is the word. Mmm. Shifts to pure chocolate as it warms. Some licorice, & inevitable bite of booze at 11.2%. 4.25/5
Taste: Espresso, with a quite sweet, candy tinge. Reminds me of espresso with a shot of anise in it. Coffee becomes more pronounced mid-sip. Dark chocolate occupies the aftertaste, leaving a satisfyingly sweet trail. Warm alcohol bite. Strong and sweet, but not overpowering. 4/5
Mouthfeel: Carbonation proves to be mild and easy to handle. Drink is pretty smooth, easier on the bitterness though it is by no means absent. Sweetness slows the sips more than anything. Medium density. 3.75/5
Overall: A nice beer. Less coffee and more chocolate than I expected. After initial worry about bottling date & appearance, taste proves to be just fine, perhaps enhanced by those 6 months of unintentional “aging”. 4/5
