A: It pours pitch black with no colors reflecting at the edge. There is maybe a half a finger of tan colored head that disappears into a thin film. No lacing on the glass.
S: I can smell the roasted barley and there is the slight smell of chocolate. The mocha scent is not as present...not absent, but just not very strong. The barley overpowers the nose of the beer.
T: Immediately I can taste the mocha flavor and some of the chocolate as well. It tastes a lot like a frozen mocha that you'd get from a coffee shop. The chocolate is not very strong but I can taste it. The end of the drink is very bitter, which is to be expected. My burps taste delicious. I can taste the alcohol in this beer after a few drinks.
M: It has a very milky mouthfeel. I had to check the bottle (Southern Tier posts their ingredients on the bottle, hooray!) and it has no lactose. Perhaps it's the Belgian chocolate? I do taste the alcohol but it doesn't seem to burn the mouth.
D: It is very easy to drink if you are used to bitter stouts or barleywines. The bitterness is not too strong but it is there. If you can sit down and drink a cup of coffee without thinking twice, this is the beer for you. It is mocha in every sense of the word. At 11% ABV it will knock you off your feet. I was originally going to give the beer a 4.5 for drinkability because of the slight alcohol flavor, until I looked at my bomber bottle and realized that it was nearly empty!!
