22 oz. bottle - poured into snifter:

Pours shiny black (dark brown when looking down into it) with a brown head that descends to thin wisps and a ring. Some dots and "legs" stick.

The smell is of very rich, delicious chocolate backed by roasted coffee.

The taste is of rich chocolate with very nice roasted coffee. They work hand-in-hand with each other and tied together by caramel. The ST house character is there. Sweetness, with a touch of warming, well-incorporated alcohol turns to a bitterish, dry finish.

Full-bodied and very smooth.

A rich chocolate/coffee dessert that has an easy drinkability for its richness and abv.

BOTTLE: 650ml. Brown glass. Appealing label art and design. Branded pry-off pressure cap.

Cost was $10.99. Reviewed live as an imperial stout since the label calls it a stout and it's 10% ABV (it seems unlikely this is merely an American stout).

Served cold into a pilsner glass at low altitude in Austin, TX, and allowed to warm over the course of consumption.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Khaki colour. 1 finger wide. Not as smooth or even as would be ideal. The consistency isn't too creamy or soft-looking either. It's not particularly full, thick, or supple. Could use some fine-tuning. The complexion is pretty nice. Recedes fully within 2 minutes, leaving no lacing.

BODY: Opaque solid black. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Appears aptly carbonated. It looks pretty conventional for the style, but has no stand-out characteristics. Rather average.

AROMA: Walnut, pecan, caramelized nuts...that's unexpected. In fact, if they billed this as a peanut butter stout I'd probably buy it. Has a nice sugary character to it, with plenty of chocolate malts and schwarz malts/dark malts in there. Its chocolate character seems artificial; consulting the label, I note that an ingredient was "natural chocolate flavor" - which has me skeptical. Hershey's chocolate syrup comes to mind, but it's not fudgy or milk chocolate-y. Maybe the artificial chocolate lent it those nutty notes? I find no coffee at all - much to my shock; usually the notes promised on the front of Southern Tier's labels are always evoked beyond question (see Creme Brulee or Choklat). Speaking of which, where is the mokah? It's creamy, sure, but the absence of coffee is mind-boggling given this beer's name and premise.

The overriding artificial sweetness is a little off-putting, but the aroma is still evocative and interesting enough; I'm excited to try this but skeptical of the authenticity of its constituent notes.

No hop profile, booze, yeast character, or off-notes are detectable.

The absence of roasted barley is concerning, but overall I find it appealing. Aromatic intensity is mild.

TASTE: Hmm. That pesky artificial sweetness and artificial chocolate/Hershey's chocolate syrup is quite bothersome, and it's joined by a hint of marshmallow which doesn't really work. I find no coffee whatsoever, nor any mocha - to its detriment. And the absence of roasted barley is a deal-breaker. Has some generic cream, as well as the requisite chocolate malts and dark/schwarz malts. On the sweeter side for the style, sure, but not to the extent you might expect given this is a Southern Tier imperial stout. The nuttiness is nice, with hints of pecan, peanut, and maybe walnut.

It's too bad its constituent notes are inauthentic and artificial; the chocolate leaves a lot to be desired and the nuttiness is odd and overly caramelized. Moreover, I wish it had more character in general, and more depth. Some burnt, charred, or ashen character would help tame the sweetness a bit. Obviously, coffee is needed. It just needs more components to lend it bitterness.

Flavour duration and intensity are average. This isn't a particularly intricate or subtle imperial stout build, but when I regard it as an American stout I find myself liking it better. Maybe this is just a high ABV plain stout? It's cohesive, but it never tastes like a gestalt whole.

No yeast character, hops, or off-notes come through. The alcohol is slightly noticeable; this would be a better brew at about 8% or so.

TEXTURE: Artificially sleek, smooth, and wet - almost porter-like. Unrefreshing. Full-bodied. Not syrupy, fortunately. But I do find it a bit too thick and heavy on the palate for its relative lack of flavour (both in terms of depth and diversity). What does work is its creaminess, but it should be creamier and softer; isn't this supposed to be a mocha beer? This texture fails to elevate the beer, but suits the taste decently.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

Overall presence on the palate is above average.

OVERALL: A forgettable and generic offering from Southern Tier, Mokah is best regarded as a high alcohol American Stout. Its biggest disappointment is its gaping absence of the promised coffee note; did I get an old bottle? Artificial Hershey's chocolate syrup dominates to its detriment, and there's little else happening. I wouldn't buy it again, and I guess I'm in the minority saying I prefer Choklat. Say what you like about Creme Brulee; at least that beer delivered on its premise. This is drinkable, sure, but it's not worth its price at all and is more on par with what I'd expect from a Victory variety box. I'd recommend steering clear; it's not that it's bad, it's just that it's generic and overpriced. Not Southern Tier's strongest work, and far from anywhere near the level it would need to be to compete with even merely good offerings in the style (whether you consider it an American stout or an Imperial Stout).

Deep, dark ruby brown color where only the minimal level of light can pass. Beige head that is predictable for stout, leaving stringy lace while maintaining a thin layer of bubbles after settling completely.

The smell is all mocha--no false advertising here. It leans slightly to the cocoa side, like a freshly opened Hersey's Cocoa.

Lots of cocoa to the tongue from the initial sip to long after the swallow. Interestingly, there's no indication to the high level of alcohol present. Lowly carbonated, given this beer a thick oily mouthfeel.

The beer pours a dark black color with a thick frothy tan head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is awesome. It has a sweet, chocolate scent that's right in line with the style. The taste is great! It has a smooth chocolate flavor with a nice complimentary coffee taste. This is a damn nice dessert beer. The mouthfeel is good. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a tremendous beer. It's a bit on the sweeter side, but I'm a huge fan.

The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a tan head. The aroma is milk chocolate with some coffee as well as some cream. The flavor is heavy on the milk chocolate with some creamy coffee notes. Thick mouthfeel and low carbonation. A excellent, full bodied stout that is very heavy on the chocolate.

Appearance: pours a black color with a one finger head that falls to a spotty surface foam. Some spotty lacing develops.

Smell: loads of chocolate rise from the glass. Some hints of coffee are there too.

Taste: big chocolate tones, nice coffee flavors, some prunes sweetness, mild roasted malt flavors, and a decent bitterness make up a superb double stout. Alcohol is warming but not noticable flavorwise.

Mouthfeel: heavy in body. Smooth and creamy throughout with some light dryness late. Aftertaste is long as the flavor linger in the moth for a while.

Drinkability: this is one of the most drinkable beers I have had at this alcohol level. Easy to quaff and numerous glasses could be had over a session but it will hit you eventually. Great beer.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 5/26/2011. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass with some alcohol legs. Aromas of huge milk chocolate, cocoa, fudge, toffee, cream, vanilla, roasted malt, caramel, light coffee, toast, and roasted earthiness. Fantastic complexity and balance of chocolate, dark/roasted malt, and light coffee notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk chocolate, cocoa, fudge, toffee, caramel, toast, vanilla, cream, coffee, roasted malt, and roasted earthiness. Light roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, fudge, caramel, toast, toffee, vanilla, cream, coffee, and roasted malt on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and balance of chocolate and dark/roasted malt flavors with moderate coffee presence; with big robustness and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic chocolate/coffee imperial stout! Even with the significant age of it. All around awesome complexity, balance, and robustness of chocolate, dark/roasted malt, and light coffee flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

A: Pours an opaque jet black in color with light amounts of gentle carbonation along the edges of the glass and hints of dark cola brown highlights. The beer has a two finger tall foamy tan head that slowly reduce to a mottled thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of sweet milk chocolate with light aromas of freshly brewed coffee and hints of roasted malts.

T: Upfront there is a strong flavor of sweet milk chocolate which is followed by moderate flavors of roasted malts and roasted coffee. Overall the beer is pretty sweet with a light amount of bitterness in the finish which fades quickly.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slick upfront with some light amounts of dryness and alcohol warming in the finish.

O: This beer is fairly sweet and pairs really nicely with dessert - in my case leftover 1st birthday cake from my daughter's birthday party over the weekend (vanilla cake with vanilla frosting). The alcohol is pretty well hidden but due to the sweetness, this is a sipping beer. Quite enjoyable.

Poured without a head into a pint. Color is black and No lacing at all.

Smell and taste are spot on with the name of mokah. Strong alcohol taste is present but hard to believe it's 11%.

Easy drinking and enjoyable but way over the top with the chocolate coffee taste.

It was served with a finger of mocha-brown head with good retention. The nose was like an Arby's Jamocha milkshake - heavy on the chocolate, underlain with coffee. The color was a Stygian black. The mouthfeel was thick, full, and chewy. It really was like a milkshake, but a quality one, not one of those watery messes that they foist on us now. Lots and lots of dark, rich chocolate on the tongue. Man, I hovered on the brink of diabetes with each sip. The finish was equally intensely sweet. As a hophead, this would not normally be my first choice, but in this case, it was a rare opportunity on draft.

Bomber bottle, pours darkest shades of brown, with some ruby hues shining through, the head is dark tan, better the average reteniona dn leaving some spotty stickage. Nose is boldly of the advertized coffee and chocolate. Thick on the tongue, bold on the flavors, high on the quality department. Loads of coffee and over the top chocolate notes. Tasty sipper. More fine brew from ST. World class dessert beer, IMHO.

Draft at The Pour House in Westmont, NJ.

Pours pitch black and completely opaque with a one finger beige head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Sporadic spots of lacing left behind.

Ridiculous nose on this beer.  The 2x milk stout was a let down but they nailed the aroma on this one.  Lots of sweet chocolate with subtle lactic cream and a decent amount of robust roast.  Smells like a tootsie roll dipped in a latte.  I wonder what the blend is because it sells more like choklat than mokah.  Either way it's very impressive with a nice gourmet roasted coffee presence countering the sweet and dark chocolate notes.

Medium bodied with a very nice balance of sweet chocolate and robust roasted coffee.  All dark and milk chocolate sweetness up front with a touch of the tootsie roll from the nose.  This is countered by roasted coffee bitterness that lingers into a dry finish where somehow the sweet chocolate flavors reappear.  The abv is invisible making it dangerously drinkable.  Great balance of sweetness and roasted bitterness with the dark chocolate notes complimenting the coffee flavor.  Similarly to the aroma, the chocolate is most prominent.  It doesn't taste like a mocha but has lots of chocolate and coffee flavor.

Near black with a modest but lasting tan head; mahogany highlights at the edges.

Well concealed ABV, particularly in the tasting.

Plenty of coffee and sweet chocolate in the aroma and in the flavor. The sweetness in the aroma is fine but there's a little too much in the taste. Started fine, but soon became cloying. A more recent tasting in June 2012 found the sweet level acceptable. The 'extra' sweetness did make for a notably nice coffee finish without much of the bitterness.

A: Pours black with a small khaki head on top, about a finger in height when poured. Not much retention, reducing to a thin ring. Minimal lacing.

S: Lots of chocolate and mocha, but not really much in the way of coffee, which for me is fine.

T: Similar to the aroma with lots of chocolate and some mocha, with very little coffee. Slightly sweet, but not over the top like other beers in this series.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth.

O: Really like this beer, more than the others I have had in the series, except choklat, because it is not over the top sweet.

Appears a deep, opaque near-black with a thick head of tan fluff that doesn't want to yield. Scattered streaks of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of huge cocoa blasts up front, followed by some roasted java beans, and a hint of toasted nuts, and vanilla.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with a balance between the Choklat, and Jahva melded into an actual Mocha Stout.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, chewy, some roasty bitterness pulling through but enough sweetness and hoppy punch to keep it interesting.
Nice idea. I like it.

Split a bomber with a couple friends. Can't say I'm surprised that like ST's other big, dark beers, this is on the sweet and syrupy side. It's not as a over-the-edge as the Creme Brulee, but I might enjoy this more on a scoop of vanilla ice cream than solo. Why? Well the beer is dominated by an almost cloying cocoa, with very minimal mocha notes. I wouldn't have guessed it's a coffee beer really (OK, it's a blend of Jahva and Choklat), many stout get more java flavor from their roasted malts. That said, it's makes for a tasty dessert beer with more balanced malts (against the chocolate, not the hops) than the Choklat. For my money, I'd just get the Jahva.

22oz fresh bottle pored into large snifters, split with oglmcdgl cause there is no way I could finish this whole bottle.

A- Pitch black like a cold night and with a moderate pour a faint dark tan head popped up with some bubbles within. The tan head faded before my glass was handed to me leaving just a sea of blackness. It took a very hard swirl to bring it back momentarily. Not much lacing just a scattered line here and there.

S- Well this really smells like choklat if you ask me but there is a very faint scent of coffee is in there but it isnt that pleasant smelling, almost generic. Overall I will give this one a pass on smell because I am a lover of choklat and this is not far off. Big huge amounts of dark malts are within the smell as well. Getting some tootsie roll as well and some mild roast.

T- Okay, a little more of the javah does come out in the taste and does make this pleasant, but in no way do I think this is a 50/50 split between the two styles, as the Choklat reigns supreme. Any hops that were used in the brewing process had no chance of making a dent in the taste, in this case they kind of support the overly sweet taste. Big focus on the malts in the taste as well.

M- Thick and sweet. Mokah has the same feel as choklat and many others in the blackwater series, although I have not had Javah by itself though. This one is very sweet and not for the faint at heart. Not bitter in any way, in fact i will venture to say no bitterness just candy like sweetness.

D- As I get older, I find myself to drink less and less in the blackwater series because it's just too much. I love Southern tier's desert beers, but only in about 5oz samples in a sitting. As for Mokah, it's a great beer but in the future i'll just pick between the two base beers and share amongst friends.

Pours black as ink with a very nice beige head that fades to a ring. Fantastic aromas of very rich dark bitter chocolate and rich black coffee, perhaps with just a hint of cream and sugar. Not very sweet, lots of nice bitterness here. The taste has lots of strong, high quality coffee flavors with a finish that is more bitter chocolate, cream, and a touch of sweetness. Very big beer, but very smooth and quite enjoyable. Not nearly as cloying and sweet as the Creme brulee, but delivers an equally flavorful hit. Very good.
