"This beer reeks of chocolaty goodness, not much coffee in the aroma, hopefully more in the flavor...nope! this beer is ALL CHOCOLATE!! Even more so than "Young's double chocolate stout! Too much chocolate in my opinion, cant even really taste the roasted malts or any coffee either....

The beer comes in a dark black color with a bit of light in the bottom of the glass with a fluffy espresso head.

The aroma is just huge. It smells like fresh black coffee with some of that sweet roasted malt that comes in these big sweet stouts. Then there's some milk chocolate in there too.

The flavor follows with some really dark bitter chocolate. Then it hits you with tons of black coffee. It's quite a sweet beer with a pronounced coffee flavor. The finish has this wonderful earthy bitterness from the Chinook and Columbus hops.

The body is actually medium for a big beer like this. However, that works with the beer being like a mocha coffee, so it has that thin mouthfeel. The alcohol is completely hidden on this.

This really wowed me. It's up there with Victory at Sea and Peche Mortel with beers that really show off coffee well.

Older bottle, unsure of age however. 2010 or 2011 most likely.

A: Pours a very dark brown but not quite black. Big frothy light brown head. Head fades out at a moderate pace. Minimal but thick little tufts of lacing. Great head retention.

S: Big, big sweet chocolate notes. There's some rich coffee in here but it's mostly buried under the sugary sweet chocolate - probably faded from age I'm guessing. Blackwater beers tend to be extremely sweet so I'm doubting it's faded THAT much either, probably just bludgeoned into submission by the sugar content. Honestly a delicious aroma, reminds me of taza coffee chocolate discs in a way. Only sweeter. A lot sweeter. Did I mention it's sweet?

T: Huh, funny. Not nearly as sweet as the aroma betrays. Still sweet but more of a bitter coffee and bittersweet chocolate flavor. Very mocha-like for sure. Lots of black patent malt, bunches of burnt barley amongst the chocolate and coffee. Surprisingly bitter in the finish and lingering aftertaste to boot.

M: Thick and viscous.

O: Interesting, very sweet aroma but much milder body. Not sure if age has mellowed the sweetness a bit. Lots and lots of bittersweet coffee, chocolate and burnt malt. Heavy body to boot. I think this might be better fresher, it's a bit muddled at this point. Still good, just not what I expect from a big Southern Tier stout.
