12oz bottle dated 4/18/12 poured into pint glass.
A: Just slightly hazy golden-yellow body with a finger or so of fine, white head. Bits of lacing are left behind, and a few small streams of carbonation bubbles move through the beer.
S: Pretty strong, sweet aroma. There's lots of ethanol, a bit of grainy malts (seeming almost like corn given the sweetness), and big quantities of all kinds of hops– herbal, floral and citrus. Grapefruit and pineapple flavors seemed particularly noticeable when the beer was fairly cold, but have been overpowered a bit once it has warmed.
T: Hops really dominate the flavor; heaps of bitter grapefruit and orange are quite noticeable here, and the herbal and floral hops keep doing their thing as well. Alcohol is decidedly less pronounced, which I'm happy about, and there's a solid malt backbone to keep everything together. Bitterness comes through on the finish– nicely balanced.
M: Thin to moderately bodied, a bit thin for the style. Very smooth and moderate carbonation lends a creamy texture, which more than makes up for thinness. Slightly dry on the finish.
O: A solid Double IPA, and I'm glad the ethanol tones from the smell didn't make it into the flavor with the same intensity. Certainly worth a try.
