Served on-tap at The Cask Republic in New Haven, Conn.
A: Deep, golden amber color under a thin veil of sudsy white foam. Retention is decent and clarity on this brew is fine; slight chilled haze.
S: Floral, citrusy and pine needle hops tingle in the aroma which is a little more rounded and fruity rather than an onslaught of hop resins. That said, still a bit skunky and delightfully hopped out.
T: Well-rounded, buttery biscuit flavor hits the palate first, leading into a juicy malt center showing hints of spiced, tropical fruits and grassy hops. The hops come on strong at first, with bitter tangerine rind and herbal, leafy flavors. Things balance out nicely, though, and the finish is bittersweet, fairly clean and without a trace of high alcohol.
M: Medium-full bodied, smooth and well-balanced. Not too sticky in the hop department which is a plus for a higher ABV DIPA.
O: A nicely balanced imperial IPA topping out just over 8% ABV. There's a lot to like in the malt bill on 2xIPA, especially if you like a bit of buttery diacetyl with your hops. Hops seem a bit stepped on in areas where you'd hope they'd punch your tongue, but there's something to be said for modesty and achieving a balance. Very good stuff, I'd surely pick up a bomber.

12 oz. bottle picked up in Port Huron; bottled March 6 2014. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a beautiful, clear golden-blonde colour with nice effervescence. A continuous swarm of bubbles lazily floats its way to the surface, reinforcing the half-inch of lumpy, frothy white head seated there. A nice-looking pale ale, with an enticing aroma that is typical of this style - lots of resiny pine, grapefruit and lemon citrus alongside milder notes of pineapple and caramel malts. Slightly floral; a nice bouquet, overall.
Full-flavoured and reasonably balanced for the style; this is a quality strong IPA if there ever was one. Doughy malts and caramel sweetness provide a backbone, upon which the hops capably strut their stuff. Their flavour is quite resiny and piney, with grapefruit pith, pineapple and a vaguely onion-like note coming through near the finish. Some lingering resiny bitterness in the finish, but not particularly long-lasted. Medium-bodied, perhaps a little on the viscous side of that category, with a smooth feel and restrained carbonation levels. The mouthfeel may just be the highlight of this beer for me; it's just unbelievably easy-drinking for how strong it is.
Final Grade: 4.34, an excellent A grade. Southern Tier's 2XIPA is one of the best 'lighter' examples of this style I have ever had the pleasure of trying. While I could see the hop profile rubbing some people the wrong way (onion/garlic is not something you really expect in a beer), in my eyes it blends quite nicely with the other hop notes and slight alcohol flavour. A fabulous beer that I hope to return to eventually, since it is not available in my home market.

Pours a hazy light copper body with a small white head with excellent retention. Laces the glass beautifully. Aromas are pleasantly floral and resinous with a distant whiff of pineapple. Just a had a KAPOW! This beer fires on all cylinders. So well rounded: initially sweet with caramel and a hint of cotton candy before a big orange peel and piney hops balance them out in the middle. A tangy pineapple and bitter orange zest linger long on the finish. Medium to full bodied, as befits a beer of such potency and strength of flavor. An outstanding double IPA.
