12oz bottle poured into a tall snifter.
Put this one in the fridge earlier today as I was looking forward to trying this after a long day of class and job interviews. I decided to crack it now even though I'm quite tired and am hoping the hops will help me sleep!
A - Due to the high alcohol content on this one I decided to go with a pretty aggressive pour. I was rewarded with a dark straw brew that grew about a 2-finger, foamy, white head. It stuck around for a little but for the most part was gone after a few minutes. Pretty great lacing with this one as well. Even after drinking half of the glass, remnants of lace are still clinging on from the head. Crystal clear with a few bubbles rising every now and then.
S - HUGE nose of pine and citrus in this one, which is to be expected for a double IPA, but the upfront-ness about it really surprised me. The hops were like a punch to the face and I'm almost wide awake now. Getting strong hints of orange and grapefruit especially. I feel like I'm in the middle of a forest after a light summer rain. Very refreshing.
T - This one is definitely a sipper. It took a few drinks for my palette to get used to the abusing bitterness from the combined hops and citrus but midway through I was enjoying it quite a bit. One of the most potent IPA's I've had so far. Orange notes interspersed throughout the pine makes this one quite tasty but the bitter aftertaste also detracts a bit.
M - Feels medium-bodied in the mouth and has ample carbonation to give the flavors a bit of a boost.
D - As mentioned before, this one is a bit of sipper. The smell and flavor are spot on, but the bitterness just wrecked my palette 3/4ths of the way through. Due to this and the high ABV, I'm not sure I could or would want to have more than one of these in a night.
Overall a pretty solid representation of the style, but the finish could be a bit smoother. I have 3 bottles left and am looking forward to them!

12 oz. bottle picked up in Port Huron; bottled March 6 2014. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a beautiful, clear golden-blonde colour with nice effervescence. A continuous swarm of bubbles lazily floats its way to the surface, reinforcing the half-inch of lumpy, frothy white head seated there. A nice-looking pale ale, with an enticing aroma that is typical of this style - lots of resiny pine, grapefruit and lemon citrus alongside milder notes of pineapple and caramel malts. Slightly floral; a nice bouquet, overall.
Full-flavoured and reasonably balanced for the style; this is a quality strong IPA if there ever was one. Doughy malts and caramel sweetness provide a backbone, upon which the hops capably strut their stuff. Their flavour is quite resiny and piney, with grapefruit pith, pineapple and a vaguely onion-like note coming through near the finish. Some lingering resiny bitterness in the finish, but not particularly long-lasted. Medium-bodied, perhaps a little on the viscous side of that category, with a smooth feel and restrained carbonation levels. The mouthfeel may just be the highlight of this beer for me; it's just unbelievably easy-drinking for how strong it is.
Final Grade: 4.34, an excellent A grade. Southern Tier's 2XIPA is one of the best 'lighter' examples of this style I have ever had the pleasure of trying. While I could see the hop profile rubbing some people the wrong way (onion/garlic is not something you really expect in a beer), in my eyes it blends quite nicely with the other hop notes and slight alcohol flavour. A fabulous beer that I hope to return to eventually, since it is not available in my home market.

Pours a hazy light copper body with a small white head with excellent retention. Laces the glass beautifully. Aromas are pleasantly floral and resinous with a distant whiff of pineapple. Just a had a KAPOW! This beer fires on all cylinders. So well rounded: initially sweet with caramel and a hint of cotton candy before a big orange peel and piney hops balance them out in the middle. A tangy pineapple and bitter orange zest linger long on the finish. Medium to full bodied, as befits a beer of such potency and strength of flavor. An outstanding double IPA.
