Draft in tulip glass. Pours a slightly hazy light amber with an eggshell white head. Initial impression is citrus and pine, nicely balanced by slight malt sweetness. Medium mouthfeel and carbonation. Slightly sticky. Alcohol well disguised. Very tasty!

12oz bottle dated 10/1/15 poured into a tulip on 2/8/16

Look: Dark-straw colored and transparent. Poured a half-finger of off-yellow head that dissipated fairly quickly. Sparse lacing. Easily roused to a large, fluffy head with agitation.

Smell: Smells like hay and fresh-cut grass. Very earthy. A bit of spice too. Some citrus upon warming

Taste: Hoppy but not really bitter. Pine and resin, but not aggressively so. Fairly substantial malt for balance. Nothing noteworthy; all pretty standard.

Feel: Moderate carbonation. Feels pretty full and frothy. Refreshing finish, not dry or crisp.

Overall: Probably one of the least noteworthy beers I've had recently. Not bad by any means, but I feel like I've had this beer many times before, just with different names. There's better stuff out there that's just as accessible.

This beer drinks like two at once. I taste the hops right away and finishes with a smooth malty flavor. Very little after taste for that initial IPA punch.

Picked up a single from Craft Beer Hop Stop on Veterans Day for $1.99. DOB is 10/1/15.

Beer poured golden with a nice white head that is leaving lacing and has some nice hang time.

Nose has hints of citrus flowers.

Taste is citrusy, piney, and fresh. Very light for a 8.2% beer.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and refreshing.

Overall this is a very nice beer at a reasonable price. I am definitely having this in the future!

Look: Golden, very clear. Faint reddish hue, although if you don't look too carefully it could easily be mistaken for a Big Beer pilsner.

Smell/Taste: Floral grapefruit. Classic DIPA flavor. Smooth. Hoppy but not very bitter.

Feel: Liquid

Overall: Very solid, if standard, double IPA. Distinct floral, fruity notes. Smooth. Has that grapefruit verging on mango flavor all my favorite IPAs have. Reminds of my all around favorite DIPA, Great Lakes Chillwave.

Pours with almost no head. Flavor is nothing like I have ever had before. To be honest, I was not that wild about it. But I am glad I at least tried it.

Overall a very good Double IPA. Nothing particularly noteworthy, but solid. Smooth and easy to drink which could permit that ABV to creep up on you. Thumbs up.

Generically bitter hops + malt + booze = your run-of-the-mill DIPA these days. Very little actual flavor from the hops, lotta pale malt alcohol... What's the point of beers like this?

Poured into IPA glass. The color is a hazy golden-orange with a thin white head and lacing. The smell features floral hops, orange, grapefruit, and pine. The taste is fairly fruity with a burst of bitter hops. There's also a faint sweet caramel. This is a nicely carbonated, refreshing East Coast IPA. The 8.2% ABV is not overpowering. It has enough sweetness that a non-hophead can enjoy it.

Whatcha see? Light clear golden body, streaming bubbles, and a creamy white head that dissipates over time with decent lacing. Whatcha smell? Sweet toasted malts, sweet smelling citrus, orange first, grapefruit second, and maybe a little earthy pine. Mouth feel is smooth, creamy, carbonated, and finishes a little slick. Drinkability is through the roof. Alcohol is non-detectable. Whatcha think? This is my new favorite IPA, I know it's a double but it's beat the old gold standard for me, which is goose island IPA. I will keep this around as much as possible. Great Job Southern Tier!

Poured on tap into a shaker pint. Amber with a slight haze, foamy head that receded immediately.

Nose is pine and fruit, a bit of the sweet from the alcohol comes through.

Flavor is more on the fruity side of the IPA spectrum than the floral. Not overly complex but nice and without any glaringly jagged edges.

This was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a bronzed orange color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within less than a minute. Light trickling lacing roamed around the glass nicely.
The smell had a sweet to bitter grapefruit to bitter citrus rind playing nicely with some caramel malts.
The taste was mainly about the sweet and the bitter hops up front. The caramel malts do play a gentle caramel underlay to try and balance. There's a slight lingering citrusy to caramel aftertaste running into the finish.
The mouthfeel was about a light to medium on the body with a good almost sessionable sort of feel but I find myself sipping this one. I'm guessing its the ABV, so that there 8.2 % is hitting nicely.
Overall, really nice DIPA that I can see myself having again.

Feel: ok

Overall: nice, super easy to drink

Pours a hazy deep gold producing 2 fingers of off-white, frothy & variously bubbled, somewhat lasting head that leaves a nice pasty wash of frost like lace. Aroma is heavenly tropical, floral & citrus hoppy backed by caramel malt & with a thin vanilla like hint & faint butterscotch. Taste is juicy tropical fruit & citrus (tangerine & Clementine) hops backed by a wet caramel sweetness. Finishes tropical/caramel sweet with citrus & a hint of pine with a low level hop bite & bitterness that intensifies & lingers for a while in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy bodied with moderate carbonation, wet & juicy, mouth filling with a mid-sip prickle that last beyond the swallow. GREAT.

A- Pours a very hazy, almost creamy golden color, in which the carbonation is too hard to tell what is happening, but from the top of the glass, it looks rather mellow and lumbering. There isn't a huge head or anything....probably about a finger in thickness, and it clears off rather quickly, leaving behind only a ring around the glass.....lacing is modest as well....nothing special to look at other than that it's very cloudy...more than usual!

S- The aromas are quite different than I would expect....very yeasty/biscuit like, and citrus fruits galore, however, there is more than this....tropical aromas....hints of banana and perhaps even a slightly tart pineapple smell....the hop aromas are super smooth, piney and of fresh leaves and some underlying malt sweetness to balance out.

T- Highly citrus in flavor, with lemons, grapefruits, oranges being the primary fruits and this is surprisingly malt heavy! I cannot believe how differently smooth and creamy this is.....bread/yeast presence is duly noted! There is a dry grassy character about it as well, and the finish is full of well rounded hop cones/pine needles, that hit the palate with a real bang. Very nice overall!

M/O- Medium bodied, creamy tight carbonation and alcohol that is very well hidden, this one is probably one of the best IPA beers out there in my opinion....not my style of choice but I very much enjoyed drinking this beer....I could probably have more than one in a sitting and it is a nice compliment to some sea salt dark chocolate.....yet another great beer from this brewery...Southern Tier always produces what they say is in the bottle!

Southern Tier 2xIPA is an American Double/Imperial type of brew. Its froth is light on a scale of light/med/thick. Its color is like a sort of darker rose champagne, and is really beautiful, it looks sort of surreal when you look at it in a clear glass, sort of "holographic" almost. It looks like a yellow beer with a red tint, very cool. Its smell is also unique, its one of the only sort of froth-less beers I've had recently that smells almost like bubblegum. Its really a unique and curiosity invoking smell. The body is surprisingly light given the lack of froth. And is closer to light, but between light and medium on a light/medium/thick scale.

This is really a sort of ambrosial Double IPA. Its a strong beer, but it doesn't have a lingering alcohol bite. Instead of a hop shell I would describe this beer as having a sort of thin beta hop acid shell, surrounding a full and rich hop tinged flavor. The aftertaste is stronger in the middle of the tongue in regards to hoppyness, and overall it is a very light and drinkable American Double/Imperial.

This American Double/Imperial is perhaps somewhat uniquely flavored by the malt varieties that are added to the beer. It is really quite unique and refreshing, and if one is looking for the muscle-relaxing qualities of an American Double/Imperial but for a more floral/malty take on said tradition I would suggest to you that you try this beer.

This is a great Double/Imperial in that it stakes its own claim and stands by it. It is a unique beer in this category and stands its ground in this space, proving to the drinker that different can still be very good.

Overall this beer is the sort of beach-sunset of Imperial Doubles and its drinking is definitely a pleasing experience.

Poor - From a 12oz bottle - Very nice poor. Gorgeous looking beer. 3 finger billowy head, sticky, that settles down to a very nice half finger top. Nice lacing.

Appearance - 14k gold. Tons of sediment and very hazy. No carbonation.

Nose - Tropical, Pine, Resin.

Mouthfeel - Medium full.

Taste - too over the top for me... to bitter/sour, too full, too much.

I'm not a fan of DIPA's.

Look: clear, amber, very pretty

Smell: Light, hoppy, fruity

Pour: Not a large head, but some nice lacing

Feel: Moderate carbonation, nice crispness

Taste: A slight bit of malt to begin, then fades to a nice hoppy bitterness. A bit dank with some fruitiness. Very nice taste.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on September 20, 2015.

It pours a slightly cloudy amber-yellow tone with a full cream colored head that settles back.

The aroma has plenty of floral, pine, and tropical esters with a toasted malt under belly.

Medium body.

The taste flirts briefly with the toasted malts but then the pine, floral, and tropical sensations kick in and bring it to a bitter finale. Makes total sense that this one gets good ratings.

I'd had this in a Southern Tier variety pack a few years back, and remembered it as drink-worthy. Recently bought a 6-pack and put one in the fridge after I got home, but didn't get to it until it was cold. Mistake! Better warm. Drinking one now that is at RT--much better!
Must say that I prefer the regular ST single IPA to this 2X, though. That can be enjoyed in multiples; the 2X is a one-at-a-timer (like most doubles, IMHO).

BTW editors, trying to force everyone's descriptions down the look, smell, taste, feel route makes for boring reading.

Maybe this is not the most traditional flavored double IPA, but that is part of the reason I like it. It is a bit more citrus forward than most doubles that I've tried. To me it tastes like a normal IPA. I picked up a single just to try it because I'm not too big on dipa's. Very glad to try it and will purchase it again.

Nice golden amber pour. Not much of a head.
Pine, lemon, citrus and hoppy aroma. All that you'd expect
Real nice taste not far away from the aroma. Citrus, pine hoppy taste with a hint of malt.
Crisp, clean mouth feel, smooth and rich
Darn good DIPA!

I would never buy this beer, either at a retail account or at a bar, but when it is offered for free, and the alternative is Coors Light, this beer will do.

To start out this is the first beer I've reviewed on BA not the first beer I've ever drank. I felt like trying some other beers ( particularly IPAs) was important in order to grade well. Also want to mention I used info on beers 101 to try and get the best and most accurate accounting of my experience wig this particular brew so here it goes:

This is the first double IPA I've tried. It has a rich Amber appearance and a moderate amount of foam when poured. I didn't get any stronger taste with this as in other IPAs. I would agree as in a previous review a bit better on the warm side. I also would say a fruitier taste too and better straight from the bottle. The feel and finish to it I think is the best thing. Overall I think it is a great beer from beginning to end.

Another solid offering from Southern Tier brewery. The beer is highly complex with a great hoppiness flavor. At 8.2% ABV it is very drinkable. Highly recommended!
