Czech Pilsener |  5.20% ABV

Availability: Spring

Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer may have a cheeky name, but don’t be fooled; it is modeled after fine European pilsners to be light and crisp. Aromatic Noble hop varieties, 2-row malted barley and European style pilsner malt contribute to this pale beer’s smooth character.

A- Pale golden with a white head that lasts decently but ultimately fades.
S- Grassy, light bread. Clean aroma with just a touch of noble hops.
T- Relatively clean throughout with a bit of crackery sweetness. The noble hops stay calm but show up as a bit peppery in the finish. Light, clean, but tasty.
M- Punches in a pretty low weight class. Almost watery. Good carbonation saves it.
O- A decent pilsner but nothing far and away better than most craft pilsners.

Cold 12oz single with "DOB 12/19/11" printed on the bottle. I can't imagine which season this seasonal was destined for, but it's certainly fresh today. Poured into tapered stange. Beer is pale golden/straw in color with thin white head and lots of bubbles. Non-skunky, slightly sweet aroma.

Flavor is light, barely sweet, with a grainy edge of 2-row. Subtle (low-IBU) Saaziness. Not nearly as bold as a real Czech Pilz but a decent execution nonetheless. Hard to love, but might be more impressed come July.

Pours a straw yellow leaning towards green. It has a white head that quickly dissipates. It is extremely clear with lively bubbles rising.

Smell has a sting of carbonation with some faint lemon citrus notes. It also has some faint bread notes leaning towards a sweet malt smell.

Taste is slight lemon zest up front mingled with the sting of carbonation, which is lively. Then some bread notes are noticed with bit of biscuity sweetness, but they fade as fast as they came into a dry herbal bitter finish. This is a good highly drinkable beer with some good flavor. Yet, the flavors are faint leaving it very mild and unexciting.

12 oz bottle poured into SA perfect pint glass.

A - Light straw-yellow with some haze. A good amount of carbonation to it. A 1.5" head formed, which stuck around for a while. Small pieces of lacing stuck to glass.

S - A hint of smooth earthy hops, cut grass, dankness. Not a bad smelling lager, just kind of weak.

T - The aforementioned aromas were present, as was a faint lemon taste. Tasted good and crisp, but aftertaste was kind of sour and bitter, not in a good way. Also detected some hints of white bread/yeast and spicy hops. Taste itself wasn't bad, but the aftertaste lowers my rating.

F - Very crisp and clean. A refreshing beer with a good amount of carbonation, which I like. Would be a very nice summer beer.

O - Not a bad pilsener, sans the aftertaste. The taste isn't bad at all, but the aftertaste isn't pleseant. Overall not a bad beer, just kind of bland. I know it's a lager, but they can still be full of flavor, this one isn't. I'd drink again, but wouldn't buy again.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Born on 01/18/12.

A: Pours a light golden hue with a 1 finger white head that is quick to dissipate. Ample visible carbonation. Crystal clear.

S: Typical pilsner aroma with a slight hop note in the background.

T: Starts off with the malt body you would expect in a pilsner, has a little hop spice and a slightly odd almost fruity (orange) finish.

M: Light, clean and drinkable. Good carbonation and a crisp finish.

Overall an easy going summer beer. Was better on tap but I chalk that up to the bottle being a little old. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys a pilsner or is seeking an alternative to the macro brews out there.

A: Really nice clarity on this one. Almost beautiful. A half finger of white head with a nice amount of lacing.

S: The smell was a little bit off. Cheesy hops. Not that great. The hop aroma just seemed a little bit off. The malt was fairly crisp but the nose was just not pleasant.

T: The first sip followed the nose but thankfully it got better. A nice crisp tasting fresh pilsner. Nice clean finish with only a touch of bitterness lingering.

M: Very light and refreshing. Well carbonated.

D: This one was just not quite there for me. It did get better as the pint went on but it was just a touch off. It was an easy drinker but the nose really did hurt it a little bit.

Pours a crystal clear golden yellow color with a skim head that leaves lines of lace on the glass at some points. The aroma is of grains and a sweet malt. The taste follows close suit with a grainy taste with hints of grassiness and a touch of citrus. The mouthfeel is moderately carbonated and crisp and clean. Overall it was a decent pils, a nice flavor with a good pils mouthfeel profile.

This poured out as a clear yellow color with a fizzy white head on top. The smell of the beer was lightly hopped with some earthy and grassy grains on the nose. The taste of the beer was light and crisp, it had some grainy flavors with the bitter hops finishing it off. The mouthfeel was very light and highly carbonated. Overall it's a pretty good drinkable brew. Nothing too special about it but I think it's alright.

Light golden straw color. Sudsy head with blanketed surface and decent lace.

Crispy golden lager malts with a slight yeast presence. Sweeter grassiness with thin Euro hop mossy aromas. Pale nose with that pilsner identity keeping it classy.

Half Czech Pils, half pale Euro lager. Hard to trace grassiness, sweet maltiness, dry finish with only mild bitterness. A little watery, needs spunkiness. Hops are muted in the middle, but come with minty pine linger in the tailend. Easy to manage in the beginning with a wet and thinned-out body, but finishes with some crackle and pop. Carbonation is a bit lower than standard fare.

Hardly anything extraordinary. A mundane pils that slights the style a bit. Drinks fine, but it's passable. 3.5

Pours a clean pale yellow color with a white head. In the aroma, just like the name, just like a Euro pils. In the taste, a small Saaz hop and a clean standard pils taste. A small bite and medium to lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry and clean aftertaste. A clean European pils, nothing exciting, but clean and fresh.

Really dry and crisp, comes off more as a Helles. "022 12" date code on the bottle, so it's relatively fresh.

Saturated bright gold color, thin layer of white foam. Spotty lace, thin unbroken skim across the surface.

Wet barley smell, slightly sulfuric. Aspirin/medicinal/green hops. Light flavors of barley and husky grains, very crisp and clean, with plenty of simple flavors that coalesce. Feel is lean and drinkable, light carbonation. A very Germanic impression, not sure Czech Pils fits here, but it's intentionally ill defined.

Paired well with cured pork loin.

Clear, straw-yellow color. Good starting head that settles quickly but does leave plenty of spotty lace.

Leans toward the "trash" than the pilsener. Lots of raw unmalted grain smells.

The flavor is an improvement, mostly from the strong hop bitterness. There's a grainy/grassy base to the taste. Relatively rich body, particularly for the style.

Straw-colored and clear. Small head.

Smells of lightly sweet malt and grassy noble hops.

Thin, grainy, bready malt flavors and a grassy, citric noble hop profile. Flavor is inoffensive and light.

Mouthfeel is light, decently carbonated, and what you'd expect from a pilsner.

Overall this is an easy-drinking light beer, and a decent pilsner.

Typical pour into a "Noble Pils" glass creates a pure white head that fades to a ring leaving some lacing. Sparkling clear, medium
size bubbles, light yellow hue. Nice aroma from pils malts and floral
hops. Pleasant flavor combining the grains and hops used. Clean
and refreshing with some lingering bitterness in the finish. Worked out well on the deck this afternoon while warming in the sun.
Good session.

Poured from a growler into my Surly shaped pint glass. Poured a pale golden yellow color with a moderate bright white head to it. Pretty decent head retention as well as lacing on the glass as I drank it.

The aroma has a mix of grainy and toasty malts along with some earthy, herbal hops. Pretty well balanced and consistent with the style. Nothing extraordinary but not bad either.

The taste shows some of the same toasty and grainy malt characteristics the nose showed. A little bit of sweetness up front followed be a little bitterness in the finish. Hops are pretty moderate overall, but noticeable. It's pretty clean and crisp as a lager should be.

The mouthfeel is light and carbonation is moderate. Drinkability is decent, it's an easy drinking lighter beer. It was consistent with the style, but not something that really stood out within the style. Overall a drinkable beer but nothing to it that really stands out. It served it's purpose on this hot day though.

Poured from an undated 12 oz. bottle: very attractive, clear golden with a too quickly receding white-head. This was a deep gold similar to the Czech style.

Very solidly pilsner in aroma with the inviting spicy aromas of noble hops and some bready/yeasty aromas.

There can be little variation in a pilsner: just make sure all of the typical characteristics are highlighted. Southern Tier does a good job: the fresh, sweet and crisp malt flavors with the teasingly tangy but pleasant hop bitterness. While this one has the hue of a Czech, the rather sharp, hop forward profile is more with a German.

Rather thin bodied, even for a light and refreshing pilsner with moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is slick and fleeting with little of the faint malt sweetness remaining on the tongue.

Overall, I good pilsner that has the added advantage of being fresh, although if I am in the mood for this style, I would reach for others. That includes some better imports, as well.

Bottle into a pilsener glass. DOB on bottle is 1/18/12.

Appearance: Clear body. Yellow in color. Average frothy white head that fades to basically nothing. No lacing. Lots of little carbonation bubbles flowing throughout.

Aroma: Spicy, floral hop. Lemon zest, biscuit and pilsener malt.

Taste: Quick spicy hop bite, somewhat floral and wet. Then kinda dulls and fades into a slightly sweeter malt character. Biscuit-y.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body. Soft carbonation kind of dulls it down but it's easily drinkable. and the flavors work well together. Finish is sweet dry biscuit.

Review from notes. Had on tap at the Pickled Pig.

A: The beer is a light golden color with a small white head that reduces quickly and leaves thin and sporadic lacing.

S: Some light, grainy malt, very faint floral hops, and a bit of lemon. Rather faint.

T: Sight floral/citrus hop flavor right away followed up by some bready malt and lager yeast.

M: Light to medium bodied, crisp and smooth. Easy drinking.

If not for being Southern Tier and the funny name, I would never pick up a Czech Pilsner. Eurotrash Pilz is a translucent light gold that shimmers with the rising bubbles from the laser etching that continues to build the head. Light floral spicey hop over a corn and light malt. Hoppiness is clean and pleasant on the tongue, slight carbonic bite and a sweet apple and malt body that's light but not overly thin. A good representation of the style and fun to drink for what it's supposed to be. If you like Czech Pilz or funny names, pick one up for fun.
