This beer is a dark brown that, while very dark, does allow some light to peek through. The brown head that forms sits steady at about a finger in height and shows good retention. A couple rings of lacing are left in my snifter before going spotty but remaining consistent.
The nose offers mostly roasty malts and dark chocolate with just a hint of tangy sweet dark fruits and a ghost of pine from hops. It's a bit understated, but displays a heavy malts profile with good balance.
The flavor showcases the same, with the sweetness of the lactose sugars coming out more strongly and setting itself in harmony with the dry roastiness of the dark malts and the bittersweet chocolate notes. The balance really works well, as a nudge in either direction would make it too sweet or too dry. As it is, it mingles very well together. The slight tang of something like prune remains, though subtle, and hops presence is low but enough to further add to the balance and depth.
The body is on the heftier side of medium, perhaps verging into heavier, with a carbonation that is appropriately light while making for a bit of creaminess. There's a good smoothness to this beer as well.

Southern Tier 2X Stout has a medium, cream-colored head, a dark brown, almost black, appearance, and just a little bit of lacing left behind. The aroma is a wonderful mix of milk/cream, dark-roasted malt, and sweet bread crust. Taste is the same, with low bitterness, but high acidity. Mouthfeel is heavy and slick, and Southern Tier 2X Stout finishes wet and sip-able.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip pint glass

The beer pours a deep brown/nearly black with about two fingers worth of dense tan head. The head fades relatively quickly leaving behind very little lacing.

The beer smells moderately roasty and slightly sweet, The aroma seems to fit into a nice middle ground of not being too mild, but also not being overpowering

The taste, like the aroma, is moderately roasty and slightly sweet. The sweetness seems to come more from a heavy handed use of crystal malts than from the lactose. The body is a little thinner than I would expect for the style.

Overall, this is a decent beer that is fairly easy to drink, but not something that I would seek out. I prefer my Milk/Sweet Stouts to be a bit fuller in body, and a have a little more sweetness from the lactose.

12oz bottle. No date. Served in a snifter 2/15/2015.

A- Dark black body, one finger offwhite head with good retention time, a bit of lacing. Looks darker than expected for a milk stout.

S- Mild cocoa, milk chocolate. Like a hot chocolate that's cooled down considerably. A bit of dark chocolate, lactose, espresso. Smells solid, but nothing too intense.

F- Silky smooth milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, lactose. Smooth and no off flavours. Lots of different "dark" flavours on the palate, solid but nothing that stands out. It's certainly sweet.

M- Medium body, sticky and slick. Leaves a milk licorice and milk chocolate finish on the palate. Not difficult to drink.

O- On the sweeter side, but it has all the "dark malt" flavours that you could want. A bit bitter as well. Not the greatest, but you could do a lot worse.

A- pours black with a 2 finger dark tan head. Small blotches of lacing polka-dot the glass.

S- chocolate and a lot of pine.

T- roasted malts and bitter, dark chocolate. Nice amount of pine hops that give it some bitterness.

M- medium body and carbonation. Has a slightly dry finish.

O- nice milk stout with good amount of hoppiness, which I like.

12 oz. bottle. Pours coffee black with an airy tan head of about 3-fingers that fades slowly to a thin cap. Not much lacing. Aroma is mocha, fruity and a little earthy.

Taste starts out with lactose sweetness and roasty grains, followed by a rich mocha toffee character. Finishes with a clean bitterness that is complimented by baking chocolate and a slight earthiness. Alcohol is well hidden. The sweetness becomes a little too prevalent as the stout begins to warm up, and the mouthfeel is a bit watery considering it's strength. Medium-low carbonation.

This beer is full of delicious and distinctive flavors considering there are no actual flavorings added, but I'm left wishing it had a more substantial mouthfeel.
