had this from a nitro tap at southern tier and it was the best i've had in some time. Creamy, smooth and a perfect balance. i'm certain it isn't as good from a bottle but if you have the chance to get it from a nitro tap.... get it and enjoy!

Excellent milk stout, great dark color with noticeable head even without an aggressive pour, head is dark and lingers well with a strong lace as the glass empties. This is a milk stout and if that's what you're after it will not disappoint. ABV is 7% so I found it very drinkable. Nice creamy vanilla overtones but the maltiness (roastiness) is a slow to arrive. Wonderful mouth feel - well balanced.

'Whoa, what a beer! Take me to the river. Served at a perfect temperature with a colossal, very light tan, thick, foamy head that just sits there and loads of lace. Color is an opaque brown black. Aroma is mainly malt, roast, and caramel, hint of toffee. Flavors like nose, mild also, roast, easy bittersweet. Finish is like flavor, incredibly easy drinking. Choice beer.

Wow. Really fine milk stout. I've had many and my standard is left hand. This is stronger, more layered, more intriguing, solid beer, overall. Soft, smooth, but packs a good punch. If you like dark beer, and you like left hand, this will very much impress you.

Well done, Southern Tier.

Pours opaque, near-black mahogany. Perhaps the labeling set my expectation, though I'm sure the aroma hints of sweetness. Flavors of dark roast and sweet milk from the teat of a goddess. Smooth and strong, the drinkability portends to danger.

Appearance: This brew pours black with a dark tan head. There is some decent lacing.

Smell: I get a lovely nose of sweet caramel, chocolate, roasted malt, cereal, and cream. Can't WAIT to dig in!

Taste: My tongue is immediately enveloped in sweet roasted malts, espresso, milky cream, and bread. There is a faint note of alcohol present as well. This is a MAN's beer! This stout finishes nicely leaving cream, espresso and sweetness on the palate. There is also very subtle hops that are tamed by the cream and roasted malts. This beer throws down heavy sweet malt goodness- just like I like- without being over-the-top-syruppy-gross!

Mouthfeel: This has a medium to heavy tongue weight with ample carbonation.

Overall: This is a phenomenal milk stout through and through. I've had this bottled and on tap, and find myself utterly pleased. It's hard to find on tap. I only know one place: McLadden's in West Hartford, CT. This brew is a real treat. And, with 7.5% ABV at the same price as many inferiors, it's well worth the investment. Southern Tier has never disappointed me. They really know how to make dark, rich beers teeming with complexity.

It smells like a chocolate milkshake with some coffee and roasted qualities. Hop bite upfront with that cappuccino and slight milkshake taste ending with some chocolate and herbal hops.

The taste is definitely the best thing about this beer. It has a very creamy taste but the texture/mouthfeel itself is not. It can some times be mistaken for a soda because of the zing at the beginning from the hops and carbonation.

The roasted malts really meld nicely with the bitterness and is a unique stout because of how tasty it is yet not very thick like a traditional stout. Definitely a good beer in my opinion.

black. opaque. dark brown head. thick moussey head. good retention. great lacing.

smell is roasty malts. chocolate. coffee. i think it smells creamy, though i just may be expecting that because lactose is on the label. slight floral hop aroma.

roasted malts. sweet and bitter at the same time. very complex flavor. this is a good stout. much bitterness from the roasted malts. slight floral hop flavor and hop bitterness. flavors of chocolate and coffee and caramel and just general big malt all around. some heat from the alcohol comes through.

medium body. soft carbonation. it does kind of have a creamy mouthfeel.

not as sweet as i would expect a "sweet stout" to be. it is a mighty good stout though.

Poured a 12 oz bottle into a chalice. 1 finger head, dark brown, but able to see through beer when backlit. Head lasted approximately 10 minutes before disipating. Smells of faint smoke mixed with some root beer. Subtle malts shine through with a deep waft. Complex and creamy, with mild roast and mild smoke, balancing each other nicely. Finishes a little sweeter with some caramel lingering, but not overpowering the bitterness of a stout. Smooth mouthfeel as a cream stout should be. Very nice!

Appearance: light darkness, beautiful color and low carbination, just like a stout should be

Smell: Excellent. Rich malty smells, chocolate, toffee. the smell of this one always gets me every time.

Taste: Excellent. It could had used more lactose to give a even richer taste, but its alcohol is perfectly contained and its flavor its extremely rich.

mouthfeel: silky, smooth, and well bodied.

Overall: this is one of the best stouts I've ever had. A very drinkable stout, its tastes, smells, and feels amazing. Not perfect, but still pretty close to it.

A perfect stout to drink after a long day, for desert, or even with ice cream in it.

I give it a near perfect 4.5 every time

A - Poured a very dark, almost black color, with a tan frothy head.

S - The smell presents the aroma of roasted cocoa with a hint of creamy vanilla.

T - While drinking, the flavors of chocolate are present with a touch of milky sweetness. The alcohol taste is definitely there, but not overpowering. It does leave a bitter aftertaste.

M - It is very thick and creamy with moderate carbonation.

O - Overall this is an excellent stout and would highly recommend for all beer enthusiasts.

Trying on tap at Lockview in Akron, OH

Appearance: jet black in color with 2 finger light tab head. Moderate lacing.

Smell: roasted malts, alcohol, and hints of vanilla.

Taste: vanilla tones, slight alcoholic taste. Roasted malts.

Mouthfeel: not much retainment. Not very much kick for what is listed as 8.0% ABV by the restaurant.

Overall: easy to drink. I could see myself drinking a couple of these in an evening.

Definitely one of the better milk stouts out there. The color is great and all the elements come together nicely to make a solid product. It finishes nicely and has a nice lingering taste.

Southern Tier is known to produce great beers overall so wanted to try this one. This is a deep brown, heavy bodied beer with a sizable tan head. Not as dark and thick as your typical motor oil stouts. This is a very complex beer in terms of flavor. Great sweet, chocolaty smell. Nice sweet, malty, dark chocolate and earthy coffee taste. A good blend of sweet from the fermented lactose and bitterness from the dark chocolate and roasted coffee. A dark roasted malt taste with a good amount of hops to it. I would say better if warmed to room temperature and served as a sipping stout. A very pleasant beer to drink. Real smooth hops with medium carbonation. If you like coffee and/or coffee-tasting type stouts, you should definitely give this one a try. It's definitely not one to disappoint in the taste department.

A: Jet black. virtually no head.

S: Chocolate, espresso, almost a sweet dessert smell.

T: First the creamy taste stands out probably due to the lactose sugars. I get a lot of coffee, chocolate and some caramel. You get a lot of sweetness but its so balanced with the coffee that its not overwhelming.

M: Great mouth feel, its so very smooth and creamy.

O: A great milk stout. I loved it and will be buying again.

Looks good pure opaque black with a small tan head.

The smell is dark roasted malts and a touch of alcohol.

The taste is coffee and milk with just a little bitterness.

The mouth feel is thick and creamy with low carbonation.

This is a very good stout, would great for dessert. It's milky, creamy and coffee like.

Milk stouts tend to be one of my favorite types of regular, non-imperial stouts so I was really expecting unique and impressive with Southern Tier 2X Stout. It doesn't take long to realize this is a very good beer. Complex with wood, chocolate and dark roast coffee.
Nice kick.
ABV7.5 but ,by taste, you wouldn't really know it.

Got this bottle at a local beer store. I didn't realize that ST did a milk stout. Let's give it a go. 12oz bottle, bottled 01/26/12...

A: A nice dark black brew with a hint of red highlights around the sides. A 1 inch tan colored head that fades at a decent pace. Good.

S: A nice vanilla chocolate upfront with some mild blended lactose and raisin. The scents blend very well. Good.

T: A nice lactose vanilla upfront quickly blended with a sticky mild sweet chocolate in the middle. A very subtle, super mild roastiness. Goes down so easy. Very good.

M: Full body with an awesome carbonation. A nice creamy vanilla finish. Awesome.

O: All in all, this is a great milk stout. WOW! This is so drinkable it's crazy! It's like drinking chocolate milk. Definitely try if you like a sweet stout that is incredibly drinkable.

Pretty good. Could be smoother. It looks great, but like many of their other beers the taste just isn't there. It isn't as smooth as I would expect from a milk stout.

Dark, almost black appearance. Some lacing with dissipating head.
Touch of sweetness, maybe a bit of chocolate.
Fruitiness at the start before lactose kicks in with a touch of bitterness at the end.
Mouthfeel is milky, a bit of coating, but a nice coating
A very good milk stout. Will look for it when I am craving a milk stout.

Like Southern Tier's 2x IPA, this is a winner. Unlike 2xIPA is the taste. This is a sweet stout. Tastey without being overly complex tasting. It is a very easy to drink strong beer, like the 2x IPA.

The appearance is average - dark, some lace, not much. The aroma is very pleasant but could be stronger. The taste is great, and the aftertaste is horrible only in that it makes you want more and more and more...

All I need ot remember is Southern Tier 2X - that = great.

From a 12 oz bottle shipped commercially, poured in a Palm tulip glass. Date is a little scratched but looks like 11/20/12 (Nov, 2012).
Pours black with a big brown head that leaves lace and mellows quickly.
Aroma of brown sugar, fresh baked milk chocolate hazelnut cookies, bitter chocolate, sweet dark malts.
Moderate carbonation and mouthfeel.
Flavors of big hops vs. dark roasted malts. Rich and complex but there's some astringency that gives a bitter bite, cream of tartar of a touch of chalk, but not overwhelming.
15 Minutes into the brew offers a small lingering cosmic star designed head, slight lace, very light chocolate malt aroma, and rich flavors of dark roasted malts with bitter chocolate notes. Overall very full bodied and tasty.

I'm a real fan of milk stouts, and this was my intro some time back. It has an excellent aroma with a bit of coffee and chocolate. The head is OK. It has some foam but doesn't seem to have much of a cling throughout. The taste, though, is excellent. As I said, it was the first of this type. So, it's been my measuring stick against all other milk stouts...and quite a high bar it sits.

From a bottle, poured into a snifter. Beer's black as night as it should be. Smell is of coffee and milk, very mild. Taste is an outstanding mix of chocolate, toasted coffee, mild hops mixed with sweetness. Good mouthfeel with mild carbonation. Excellent beer.
