Dark brown body and a thick, mocha colored head.

Lots of roasty chocolate in the nose, some lactose sweetness as well. Pretty on dimensional but I like it. I tasted a little milky sweetness but it was definitely in the back round. Hugely sweet chocolate and plenty of roasty char dominate this one. Again, not much in the way of complexity, but I thoroughly enjoyed my bottle.

12 oz bottle DOB 9/19/14 at 40 degrees into tulip
Aroma of roasted malt
Head small (<1 cm), light brown, frothy, rapidly diminishing to 3 mm partial ring
Lacing poor – few short arcs of tiny bubbles remaining when the partial ring lowers
Body dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor of burnt malt but somewhat sweet, not bitter. No hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate medium, creamy, lively carbonation

Appearance 3, Aroma 3.75, Flavor 3, Palate 3.5, Overall 3.3125
Another mediocre offering from Southern Tier. The burnt taste is pervasive and has a long hang time. Fortunately the sweetness makes this tolerable. Incidentally I like stouts, just not this one – the burnt taste is just too overpowering in the absence of any chocolate or coffee flavors.

Bottled on date of 12.26.13.
Poured into a goblet on 05.28.14.

A: 1 finger tan head. Midnight black with no red.

S: Toffee, chocolate, malt, roastiness.

T: Raisin and dark fruit dominate. Roastiness and woodiness are subtle.

M: Creamy.

O: This is a solid stout. The woodiness is stronger in this one than others. It is well balanced, but there are better stouts than this one.

Rating: B-
