A- black and opaque with a small tan head that stays around.

S- Sweet milk chocolate, coffee and a touch of earth. There's also a but of resins hop aroma that doesn't fit.

T/M- very smooth and creamy but the favors don't work. Moderately roasty flavors on the front end lead to a middle which is a confused mess of extreme sweetness and moderately strong bitterness, with the bitterness winning out and lasting long after the finish.

O/D- this is the type of beer where one aspect ruins all the positives. The hop bitterness of this is not only out of style but it's off putting and clashes with the sweet, chocolate and toast characteristics. Not something Id get again.

Nice very dark, with minimal head. Looks good.
Not much aroma other than chocolate milk. Very milky aroma.
Taste is a very bland chocolate milk, heavy on the milk. It seems like mild muddle of milk and chocolate. It brings back (very bad) memories of afternoon milk snack in elementary school in the late 50's. (Qualifier: I don't like or drink milk unless it has cereal in it.) This beer isn't bad, but it comes close enough for me. I'll pass.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours dark black with brown hues; head doesn't really stick around and there's not too much lacing and retention to speak of. The aromas are kind of fain and subtle. There are hints of milk chocolate and malts, but once again it's not pungent. I'm actually even less impressed with the flavors. Something is off. This one leaves a very bitter and unpleasant after taste. Metallic notes? I was expecting this one to be sweeter, but it's not. There's a nice roastiness and a touch of smoke. There's just something off with the flavors, and I can't put my finger on it. Mouthfeel is alright, light-medium bodied, lots of carbonation. Not the tastiest stout I've ever had.

Overall, the flavors didn't do it for me. I guess I expected a little more from Southern Tier. I'll pass on this one in the future.

A-Pours quite dark but not very thick in body. Moderate light penetration. Head is smaller and bubbly but is quite light in color. Small head retains well and does a pretty good job painting the glass with lace.

S-Interesting aroma. Not very heavy but it brings for aromas of lactose and some smokiness. Sweeter chocolate and subtle coffee. Light hops. Definitely milky.

T-Flavor has a strange, lingering, coppery-metallic twang that almost takes over the entire flavor. Made me wince a bit. Sweetness and lactose behind the off-putting metallic flavor. Really not digging the flavor here. Tastes like its been sitting in a can for 2 years. Maybe its the lactose? Who knows.

M-Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Lighter than expected.

O/D- God, the metallic taste won't leave. My palate refuses to adjust to it. Really surprised to dislike this beer as much as I do. I love their 2X IPA, but this 2X bothers me. Makes me glad to have only purchased a single. I rarely, rarely drain-pour, but this one is close.

From a 12oz bottle into a snifter.
Typical pitch black with a small, clingy off white head.
Some roasted barley, lactose sugar and a little hops.
Sweet malt, some roast, lactose, burnt coffee and a slight metallic after taste. Just seems overly sweet like the other Southern Tier stouts. The flavors don't mesh well for me.
Creamy mouthfeel with adequate carbonation.
Wishing I would have tried this before buying a six pack.

Bottle. Poured into a tulip glass a dark brown color with a thick light tan head. Slight roast and chocolate in the nose but nothing over the top like some of their other beers. Medium, velvety mouthfeel. Slight roast with a dark chocolate sweetness. Almost has a little smokiness to it as well. Ends with a lingering bitterness and leather taste. Overall, not as good as I expected from them.

A - Dark black color with the standard white head

S - Roasted chocolate with the hints of cappuccino

T - Chocolate is up front, but the bitterness of the high alcohol takes too much away from the sweetness and silky texture that should be there in any milk stout

M - Very thick, high carbonation for a milk stout

O - Overall, I wouldn't really consider this a "milk stout", or what I think of when I hear the name. The bitterness takes away from the silky smooth texture and taste I love about milk stouts.

Bought from Central Market in a Pick 6.
Poured from bottle into a pint glass.
(Review from notes)

A - Black and thick - no light can shine through this darkness. Tan head, which is small, but it hangs around.

S - Malt, cream, and a strong hint of alcohol.

T - Roasted malt, no sweetness. Bitter finish. Weird for a milk stout.

M - Not smooth, which is surprising - there is a fair amount of carbonation. Medium thickness.

Summary - Ok, they mislabeled this, right? It's a stout, not a milk stout. No sweetness, no milk or cream, it's not smooth and malty like a chocolate malt. Wow, my first taste of Southern Tier, and I'm super disappointed.

Poured into an imperial pint glass.

A: Pours a transparent black with red highlights. Has less than 1 finger of white head that dissipates quickly and thin webbed lacing.

N: Coffee & cream along with milk chocolate and marshmallow.

T: Cola and watered down chocolate upfront. Some bitterness comes through mid-palate with cocoa nibs and a splash of black coffee. Finishes bitter with charred earth along with hints of lactose. There are some subtle hints on lemon citrus in there throughout.

M: Light-medium bodied, semi-creamy, smooth and dry.

O: This is actually kind of bitter for a cream stout. There is a good roasty quality to it along with some light tones of milk. Not bad.

Drank from my Chimay Chalice

A - Pours a deep ebony colour with a tanned head that reduces quickly

S - Not much other than some dark malts

T - Very smooth flavours of chocolate and coffee. The booze is well hidden, slight bitterness on the finish.

M - Light to medium body and low carbonation

O - An enjoyable stout without being wow
