Bottle into stout glass

Appearance- Jet black, 1 finger head

Aroma- Coffee, roasted malt, some chocolate, slight piney hops

Flavor- Very big on the roasted malt, coffee flavors, dark chocolate, its on the sweet side but not by much. Very smooth, velvet, a slight lingering astringency, slight alcohol

Mouthfeel- Medium to medium-full, moderate carbonation, slight alcohol warmth

Overall- A very nice double take on the style. Its a little bit to astringent from the roasted malt which cuts into to the sweetness. But a very nice beer that I've returned to a few times.

A - Dark brown with a small brown head and only a few flecks of lacing. Subpar for a stout!

S - The nose is a very clean, earthy aroma with a hint of coffee. Nothing bad, but there is just not a lot going on there.

T - Sweet with a hint of chocolate, then in roughly equal, very mild amounts there is carob, coffee, chicory and camp fire. The aftertaste is a lingering sweetness with a hint of forest floor with a woodsy bitterness.

M - Smooth, medium bodied, pretty refreshing.

D - Really nice! I enjoyed this one a lot. I won't hesitate to have it again either.

A- pours black with a 2 finger dark tan head. Small blotches of lacing polka-dot the glass.

S- chocolate and a lot of pine.

T- roasted malts and bitter, dark chocolate. Nice amount of pine hops that give it some bitterness.

M- medium body and carbonation. Has a slightly dry finish.

O- nice milk stout with good amount of hoppiness, which I like.

Saw this bad boy at TW. I love stout so hey 2X stout must be twice as good, so let's give it a whirl. Popping the top I get nice roasted malts and a definite heavier ABV than your average stout. Some licorice and somehow a hint of cinnamon. Pours into my trusty SA perfect pint like a chocolate milkshake, thick and heavy classic motor oil. Nice tan head with multi-sized bubble groupings. Taste is large and in charge with a very sweet roasted malt with some toffee up front and a slight bitter middle, still under the sweetness then a sweet and chaulky bitter fade at the end into a pleasant charred dry bitter aftertaste. Mouthfeel is thick and syrupy a good assest with the flavor. Sweeter than I expected but it is a milk stout so it is actually spot on. A very tasty brew. I recommend.

Pours pitch black with a thin tan head that doesn't stay around very long before becoming a wispy patch. Some dotted lacing sticks.

The smell is of chocolate syrup, chocolate cake, lactose (giving a sour touch) and some alcohol.

The taste is very much of chocolate. The sweet, dark chocolate is balanced by sour lactose and mild roast. The alcohol is quite apparent - almost harsh. It has a fairly long finish.

It is pretty silky - full-bodied but not thick. The moderate carbonation fits it well enough.

This is a nice, chocolatey, with sour notes, "sipper".

On Tap from Joe Canal's. Pours dark brown with a long lasting, thick, beige head, good amount of lacing and carbonation Aroma is of bready, toasted malt and dark fruit. Body is full and creamy. Taste is toasted malt, bread, roasted grain, dark fruit, cacao, brown sugar and some earthy hops. Long, somewhat sweet finish. Nice, complex brew.

Pours a nice dark color with very little head. Almost no lacing Taste and aroma of coffee and roasted malts. An excellent bodied brew. You don't notice the higher alcohol content. Going down very easy with not much of a hint of bitterness. I wish there was a little more bite to this beer but it is above average none the less

Had a bottle at o'hare for 8.00.

Beer was served black with a decent off white head.

Nose had hints of mocha and lightly roasted malts.

Taste was well balance between the malts and hops.

Feel was medium bodied and smooth.

Overall a nice beer to have - recommended.

Pours a solid dark brown/black color with a smallish tan head that dissipates to a ring on top. Smells of light roast, chocolate, and caramel with hints of vanilla and light fruit. The flavor is roasty and smokey with lots of chocolate and caramel as well as vanilla and dark fruits. Wow I wasn't expecting such a complex flavor based on the aroma. Medium body with a moderate level of antiabortion and a sweet almost sugary mouthfeel. Nice stout, I'm glad I picked one up the other day.

On tap poured into a tulip

This beer pours pitch syrupy black with a brow/tan head. The smell is light but matches the taste. This beer is quite tasty but not super flavorful. Flavors include chocolate, roasted malts and a creamy maltiness. The lactose sugar is definitely detectable and I actually quite like what it provides, I have never been big into lactose sugar. The brew is pretty syrupy but smooth. Its like having a desert in a drink. This beer doesn't stray too far from the pack but its quality speaks for itself. Good stuff

Look. Fairly dark mahogany, tan medium head.
Smell. Balanced smell between sweet malts and crisp hops, some banana/vanilla, more than most beers for me.
Taste. Mostly toasty, hoppy, dry, not much malt taste, bit of vanilla.
Mouthfeel. Medium body, some sparkle, tangy, oily at the end, but good oil.
Overall. A bit too thin, toasty, hoppy. Out of balance to the hop dry side.

Pours a dark black with a medium tan one finger head that fades into a thin cap with moderate lacing.

Aroma of of malt and hints of coffee.

Taste of dark roasted malt, black bold coffee and dark chocolate with a slight bitter after taste.

Mouth Feel was medium body with low carbonation, creamy and smooth.

Overall this was a very enjoyable Milk Stout, I did not get the sweetness that a milk stout usually offers, but that was fine by me.

Appearance: dark brown in color, 1/4 inch head that goes quick, clear, moderate carbonation

Smell: vanilla and roasted smoky malt

Taste: sweet roasted malt, light smoke, and vanilla at the end

Mouthfeel: medium-light bodied, moderate-high carbonation, roasty body with a sweet end

Overall: I like this one but this is a two in a sitting max due to the sweetness. One of Southern Tier's better smaller bottles. I really hope they continue with producing quality beer in small sizes. I will look for this again.

12 oz bottle poured into my tulip.

A - nice and dark, just like it should be. Very little head. Recedes quickly.

S - there's not too much in the smell, but I can definitely detect the milkier aspects of this stout

T - pretty good, again the milky aspects stand out compared to ST's imperials, like Choklat and Mokah. Somewhat empty at only 7+% ABV.

M - meh. the carbonation sticks to me too much, but it's not super unpleasant going down.

O - I'd be interested to try this on tap. I'm glad it's in six packs, but there are better chocolate/milk stouts out there.

A- served in a big old snifter with creamy tan head and lots of swirly lace. Body is a deep chestnut brown, almost black.

S- roasted aroma is subdued until it warms significantly and I'm glad this bar was nice enough to have the oversized snifters. Roasted and chocolate, some coffee, stone and mineral with molasses and slight berry tartness. Hints of booze as well.

T- taste mirrors the aroma with less sweetness than expected and big roasted coffee flavor. Very earthy with mild hops and some leafiness. Nice dark chocolate with a hint of acidity.

MF- big bodied and sticky with light carbonation

D- pretty decent but seems kinda dry for the style.

A - Pretty hard not to describe a stout other than pouring black like coffee. Has a thin layer of creamy head that's toffee colored and sticky.

S - Cocoa nibs, dark roasted chocolate, light vanilla cream, light caramel, and mocha.

T - Charcoal, dark cocoa, deep roasted chocolate, cream, with a finishing mocha bitterness that lingers along with bitter chocolate and light charcoal.

M - Medium body with a rich texture and enjoyable smoothness but a little on the thin side.

O - I've been wanting to try this one ever since it came out and have no excuses for waiting this. An straightforward and enjoyable stout that goes down quite easy.

Pours with little head. Drinks fairly nice and smooth. As other reviews have noted, not a lot of chocolate flavor. Taste good, just not great. Borderline Fair/Good. I'm no expert though, give it a chance and post your thoughts.

Finnegan's here in town has $3.50 nitro drafts on Thursdays, and this was one of the specials yesterday. Sounded the most tempting. Came out a jet black with the typical hazy drift of mocha tinted nitro bubbles creeping to the top creating the creamiest of heads. Looks like a dallop of whipped cream on top.

Aromas of sweet cream, chocolate, and lightly roasted coffee beans. The beer is not as smooth as I'd anticipated given its nitro-backing. Still a nice bite to it. Easy to drink though. I had no problem putting the gulp to this one. Creamy chocolate, roasted character, light vanilla on the back end. Easy finish. A nice beer.

Pours completely black with a 1" tan head from a fairly aggressive pour. A couple of minutes drops it to a thick film but leaves decent lace behind.
Smell is toasted malts, baking chocolate, cardboard, smoky char, a light caramel and a mere whiff of evergreen in the background. Well balanced.
Taste is heavily roasted malt, caramel, semisweet chocolate, cardboard and just a hint of hops.
Fairly rich, slightly drying finish, a bit more than medium bodied. Faint effervescence. Nice and smooth, well rounded aftertaste that just slowly fades away. Easily a sippable beer, it just lends itself to that role without being a huge ABV brew.

12 ounce bottle with DOB dating.

Pour is near black , minor dark tan head, leaves just a slight colar and next to no lace.

Dusty chocolate and sweet milk notes in the nose.

Flavorful stout, more sweet chocolate and milky notes on the palate. Sweet but not near cloying. Quite enjoyable offering. Nice with any sort of chocolate dessert. Worth giving a try.

Pours opaque black color that lets brown show through when held up to light, with a 1 finger creamy tan head that faded on the quick side and left decent foamy lacing and a layer on top.

Smells of roasted malts, cocoa powder, chocolate, light anise, coffee beans, caramel or syrup, herbs, light floral hops and a little burnt wood; overall roasted aroma that has a nice variety in the mix.

Tastes like it smells, with roasted malts, cocoa powder, licorice, chocolate, light anise, coffee beans, caramel, syrup, herbs, grains or wheat bread, light floral hops, lemon zest and a little burnt wood or charcoal; there is sweetness and bitterness going back and forth, and the roasted malts and coffee flavors come out the winners in the battle for attention. The hop and coffee bitterness calm the sweetness and make this very smooth and complex, with enough flavors to let every aspect add to the nice balance for this style.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, and while this beer seems heavy and chewy it flows down really fast which is likely due to the very low carbonation; it has an almost watery feel, like a chocolate milk and the bitterness at the end lets it trial off sweet with roasted coffee and chocolate notes.

This brew hides the ABV very well and is similar to a Starbucks bold that’s been sitting out all day. Definitely a nice desert beer that’s worth trying.

A: Pours a black color with a small tan head that fades to bits of lacing.

S: Aroma of roasted malt, with chocolate and coffee to round it out.

T: Taste follows the aroma with roasted malt, chocolate and coffee and some caramel sweetness. Mild bitterness in the background with a dry finish.

F: Full body, smooth, thick and creamy. No real hint of the 7.5% ABV. very nice balanced.

O: Goes down easy. Good beer without being overpowering.

Found this on tap at My Place in Newtown, CT. It's a solid black stout with a modest tan head that breaks quickly into a ring and fair horizontal lacing. The aroma is a pleasant malt coffee bean bite with some nutty nuances. Not very strong but very solid. The flavor is a no nonsense green malt and bitter coffee with a sweet pear/vegetable hint. Really nice, in a medium-plus bodied brew with very little evidence of carbonation and a silky feel. A classic milk stout that goes down easily! Yet another triumph from Southern Tier.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown with ruby highlights and a modest head that is not very stouty; leaves a few strands of lace

Smell: Lactose and chocolate, with fruity undertones

Taste: The lactose comes through more than the chocolate, up front, and by mid-palate, there is both dark fruit and a hint of citrus; after the swallow, the lactose returns, leaving a sweet impression on the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: You can tell this is a Southern Tier beer, with the sweet and chocolate tones that have become the trademark of their stouts; I find them enjoyable in small quantities and this is no exception; glad it is is a 12 oz bottle

Bottle purchased as part of a mix-six pack at Wegmans.

Pours basically dark black, with a creamy looking 2 inch head, and some sticky lacing down the glass. Looks great.

Smells like lactose, vanilla, roasted malt, and chocolate.

The taste is similar. Very silky smooth from the lactose, as is the typical case with milk stouts. Very sweet, with lots of rich chocolate flavors, and a small amount of roasted malt flavor.

Incredibly creamy and smooth mouthfeel, medium carbonation keeps it lively. Medium bodied.

One of Southern Tier's best stouts, which is saying something, because they make some great stouts.
