L: Well, it looks like a stout: jet black with a tan head.

S: Smells like cocoa powder. It’s roasty, but undercut by a certain sweetness.

T: The flavor follows the aroma: roasty with a very perceptible sweetness throughout. This beer is rich and some subdued dark malts pull through in the finish, but this is definitely offset by the sweetness. Also less lingering bitterness than one would expect from a stout of this strength. Alcohol is somewhat perceptible, and I’m also picking up hints of oak.

F: Medium-full body and moderate carbonation. The lactose really shows its true colors with the mouthfeel. It is creamy and lush and leaves a gooey feeling in your mouth (in a good way!) A bit of warming alcohol in the post-sip.

Overall: Pretty solid non-imperial stout. It has a delightfully thick mouthfeel that I can only attribute to the lactose. Since I tend to prefer my stouts on the strong side, this one works quite well. The sweetness really makes this style unique but it is even more prevalent in this beer than other milk stouts I’ve had. Wouldn’t mind having this one again.

Pours with little head. Drinks fairly nice and smooth. As other reviews have noted, not a lot of chocolate flavor. Taste good, just not great. Borderline Fair/Good. I'm no expert though, give it a chance and post your thoughts.

Dark beer, no head to speak of, no lacing ... just dark.

NIce aroma, mostly cocoa, with some roastiness.

Flavor is different from the aroma ... not so much chocolate, more overall bitterness. It's kind of tasty, but not quite right to me.

It's a decent stout, but not a great one.

Re-review. 12 oz bottle into a teku.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown color. The head is a finger high and tan in shade. Steady to fade away, its retention isn't the best. Tiny bits of lacing stick to the glass. (3.5)

Smell: Somewhat indistinct. While I pick up some lactose notes, they're pretty light - as are the chocolate and roast notes. There are some additional fruit esters that add a little bit to it, if nothing else. This one isn't swaying me one way or the other. (3)

Taste: This one tastes odd, kind of like how I remembered. It starts off with some lactose sweetness, before transitioning into an underwhelming mixture of piny hops, caramel, and generic charred bitterness. No chocolate, no coffee, no roasted bread, just a whole bunch of char. And as it warms up, the generic char becomes worse. This is one of the few stouts that (to me) tastes like it has too much crystal malt. As we know, my opinion of crystal malt is that I don't like it too much in an IPA or pale ale, but in a stout/porter/brown ale, I'm perfectly fine with it. Here, though, it's annoying. And frankly, ruins the beer. (2.25)

Mouthfeel: The feel manages to be both sweet AND thin - by the way, that's not a good combo. A touch of astringency and a slightly larger touch of bitterness helps it go down somewhat easily, if nothing else. Carbonation is moderate to slightly low. (2.75)

Overall: I still don't like this one very much. It simply has too much burnished caramel and not enough roast. All in all, a rare blemish on Southern Tier's otherwise rock-solid regular lineup. (2.5)

2.61/5: 2x crystal malt isn't a good thing

L: as to be expected from a milk stout, brown/black with a little light around the edges. Little to no head
S: muted smell of chocolate, some alcohol as it warms
T: coffee, roasted. I think the taste actually got worse as it warmed, as the cocoa flavor dissipated and the roasted coffee flavor got more prevalent
F: average mouthfeel, touch thin, getting drier as it warmed. Not my favorite for stouts
O: I started off thinking of this as a 4.0 type beer, but as it warmed it started to disappoint, making it more if a 3.5. I'll split the difference

Pretty good. Could be smoother. It looks great, but like many of their other beers the taste just isn't there. It isn't as smooth as I would expect from a milk stout.

Attractive dark golden brown brew with plenty of foam in the New Belgium snifter. Pleasantly sudsy in the mouth. Quite sweet and tangy at the same time. Hints of chestnut and orange marmalade. Warm roasted malt with a touch of vanilla. Bitter chocolate touch and bitter finish. Intersting brew though hard to drink much. From the 22 oz bottle purchased in Oak Harbor, Washington.

Appearance - Pours dark cola brown with a cocoa colored half finger head. Sub-par retention results in a mostly barren surface with a thin ring of suds around the edge of the glass. Mostly spotty lacing with good stick.

Smell - Aroma hits on notes of dark chocolate and fudge with light roast notes.

Taste - More bitter than the aroma indicates. Bittersweet chocolate before earth and grassy bitterness hits in the finish. Okay, but not my thing.

Mouthfeel - Full in body with moderate, bitey carbonation. Lightly sticky texture.

Overall - Decent, but nothing I'd care to buy again. A shame, since the aroma offers such promise.

Had a bottle at o'hare for 8.00.

Beer was served black with a decent off white head.

Nose had hints of mocha and lightly roasted malts.

Taste was well balance between the malts and hops.

Feel was medium bodied and smooth.

Overall a nice beer to have - recommended.

Tasty stout. Here goes:

A: Not that good. Pours a small head and doesn't leave much lacing. The body, however, is very dark.

S: As advertised. Lots of lactose sugar and dark chocolate. Lots of coffee as well.

T: Follows the nose, but it's a little too simple. Just dark chocolate and milky coffee. that's about it.

F: Good. Nice and thick.

O: Good beer, but wish it was more complex and robust.

A - Dark brown, mostly opaque, with slight transparency on the edge. Light tan head, some mild lacing.

S - Roasted malts, toast, a bit of coffee acridity.

T - Follows the nose, with a slight floral note and a bigger roast coffee note on the close. There is also a moderate milk sugar sweetness that floats in the background throughout.

M - A bit light for the style. No sign of the ABV. Mild carbonation and slight drying on the close prevent any cloying weight.

O - The elements for a great stout are all here. The main issue here is that the acridity is dialed a bit forward, the sweetness a bit too far back, and the end result is a beer not quite as good as the sum of its parts.

Honestly should be a lower ABV beer like most other milk stouts, leaves an alcohol taste, not bad, but not what I want from a sweet stout, other than that good beer, not great but not bad

Pours a nice black color, shows some brown on the edges when held up to the light.
Nice aromas of roasted malts and little hops on the end. Makes my mouth water!
Has that great chocolate milk taste with a nice bitter hoppiness on the end.
Super easy to drink and a really tasty beer!

Look. Fairly dark mahogany, tan medium head.
Smell. Balanced smell between sweet malts and crisp hops, some banana/vanilla, more than most beers for me.
Taste. Mostly toasty, hoppy, dry, not much malt taste, bit of vanilla.
Mouthfeel. Medium body, some sparkle, tangy, oily at the end, but good oil.
Overall. A bit too thin, toasty, hoppy. Out of balance to the hop dry side.

12oz bottle. No date. Served in a snifter 2/15/2015.

A- Dark black body, one finger offwhite head with good retention time, a bit of lacing. Looks darker than expected for a milk stout.

S- Mild cocoa, milk chocolate. Like a hot chocolate that's cooled down considerably. A bit of dark chocolate, lactose, espresso. Smells solid, but nothing too intense.

F- Silky smooth milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, lactose. Smooth and no off flavours. Lots of different "dark" flavours on the palate, solid but nothing that stands out. It's certainly sweet.

M- Medium body, sticky and slick. Leaves a milk licorice and milk chocolate finish on the palate. Not difficult to drink.

O- On the sweeter side, but it has all the "dark malt" flavours that you could want. A bit bitter as well. Not the greatest, but you could do a lot worse.

Tasting this transports me back to childhood, visiting my grandparents in Buffalo, tasting my grand-dad's Genesee Cream Ale. A fond memory but honestly, not very good beer.

Pretty, dark color. Fine tan head.
Bouquet of an American lager hints at disappointment to come.
Moderate mouthfeel, would expect more richness from the color.
Flavor has some bitterness, cocoa. Improves a bit in the glass.
But honestly: meh. With a name like 2x stout I expected something more Imperial.
Decent finish, reasonable intensity.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a pretty, completely opaque, pitch-black color with an eighth of a finger of caramel-colored head that immediately dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that gripped the sides of the glass and partially covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Roasted malt, freshly baked dark bread, dark chocolate, coffee and caramel. Nice aromas.

Taste: Great! Strong roasty flavors of coffee, toasted pumpernickel bread and dark chocolate, followed by some vanilla and caramel-like sweetness. The beer finishes with just a touch of hoppy bitterness. Very, very good.

Mouthfeel: Slightly chewy and very creamy, as there is practically no carbonation what-so-ever. With an ABV of 7.5%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is another great milk/sweet stout, and another great beer from Southern Tier. Great flavors of roasted malt, coffee and caramel, all wrapped up in a creamy quaff. Delicious!

The best thing about Southern Tier's 2X stout may be how it looks when first poured out of the bottle. It's nearly pitch black with a small, but surprisingly long lasting, tan head. The aroma, which is largely of coffee with some hints of sweetness, won't take you by surprise, but is fairly pleasant. However, this beer fell short for me when it came to taste. Much like the smell, every sip tasted almost completely of coffee, and while there were some hints of chocolate and lactose both were fairly minor in comparison. That being said, the beer felt fairly good in the mouth, with appropriate thickness and mild carbonation, which was a pleasant touch.

This beer is by no means bad, but the dominant coffee flavor drowns out some of the enjoyable complexities found in many other milk stouts. If you're a big fan of coffee flavoring in your stouts, this may well be the brew for you, but others may want to look elsewhere.

This was far too sweet for me, but pretty typical of the style. Not a big fan of Milk Stouts. This one was had too thin of a mouthfeel and the aroma was almost non existent.

12 oz bottle - stout glass
A - black, healthy tan head that eventually dissipates, decent lacing while it lasted, but eventuallly disappeared
S - roast coffee, very distant hints of malt, red wine and alcohol
T - a good mix of coffee and dark fruit, I wasn't too keen on the amount of bitterness, but it didn't ruin the beer
F - Very good, moderately thick with a slippery feel, smooth
O - I would drink this again. The smells and the flavors weren't overpowering and there didn't seem to be anything dominant, only primary (roast coffee). I didn't care for the mild bitter finish, but it wasn't a deal breaker

Definitely one of the better milk stouts out there. The color is great and all the elements come together nicely to make a solid product. It finishes nicely and has a nice lingering taste.

Look: Pitch black with a one finger head. Head fades quickly to next to nothing.

Smell: Roasted dark chocolates and malts.

Taste: Roasted dark chocolate and malts. A slightly hoppy finish, but not over the top.

Feel: Medium-full bodied, nice creamy, chewy texture. Mild carbonation.

Overall: Straight simple and to the point, my review that is. I'd like this stout to be a tad sweeter, but overall, a great beer.

Pours opaque, near-black mahogany. Perhaps the labeling set my expectation, though I'm sure the aroma hints of sweetness. Flavors of dark roast and sweet milk from the teat of a goddess. Smooth and strong, the drinkability portends to danger.

Some chocolate in the malt and maybe to much coffee. Not what I would consider creamy but I wouldn't consider it thin either. Overall a nice little stout that was enjoyable but nothing special that I would seek out.

Poured into a tulip pint.

L- Pours chocolate-brown with almost no head. Not unattractive, but does look "thin" for a stout.

S- Really picking up a cocoa vibe in the aroma department.

T- not finding much of that cocoa I smelled, there are coffee notes. No 'milkiness' at all. Too much hop action for the low level of malt.

F- Way too thin for a milk stout.

Not a bad beer, but not a great one. I certainly wouldn't turn it down if I were offered one, but I don't see me paying for another one either.
