pours out a nearly opaque brown and black mix with some garnet hues peaking through. tan head rises and falls leaving a bit of clinging lace. dark roasted malt aroma with a surprisingly girthy flowery hop aroma. a touch of lactic and milk chocolate for good measure. a good dose of charred malt flavour with residual acrid bitterness is dominant. a slight boozy kick intrudes...then there is a tame lactic aspect whispering some ripe fruity flavours and hints of yeast, cocoa and nougat. floral hops do more than enough to tame any cloying aspects with some welcome back end bitterness. really surprised that this seems more stout than milk stout. it is sweet, but not as much as i was anticipating. nevertheless it has a full, rich body and a pleasant, sturdy, semi-slick mouthfeel. this stout is just plain solid and a has nice drinkability...especially on a blustery january evening.

overall i'm impressed with this stout. the sweet and sour lactic notes are muted, it certainly has a double stout taste and feel to it, and it never comes across as cloying or syrupy. after being underwhelmed by previous southern tier offerings, i would consider this a definite must try and would highly recommend for winter time consumption.

S: Creamy, light chocolate, some vanilla and brownie notes. Just a hint of earthy hops, touch of roast.

L: Very dark brown, bordering on black, light tan head that dissipates.

T: Rich, milk chocolate malt with some cake batter notes. Low bitterness with some cappucino like flavors in the middle. Finishes with some light ashy, roast mingling with the mocha like flavors. Lactose fairly mild throughout. Finishes semi-dry.

M: Medium full body, very smooth on the palate. Medium low carbonation.

Really enjoyed this beer, not too sweet with the lactose working great throughout without being too overpowering. One of the best milk stouts i've had.

A: Pours a black color with a small tan head that fades to bits of lacing.

S: Aroma of roasted malt, with chocolate and coffee to round it out.

T: Taste follows the aroma with roasted malt, chocolate and coffee and some caramel sweetness. Mild bitterness in the background with a dry finish.

F: Full body, smooth, thick and creamy. No real hint of the 7.5% ABV. very nice balanced.

O: Goes down easy. Good beer without being overpowering.

A: Pours a near pitch black color with dark mahogany edges and a fingers worth of tan head that quickly fades to a layer of froth

S: Really only get some roasted malts and a light hint of coffee... maybe some sweetness

T: Again, mostly roasted malts but there is definitely a lactose sweetness that is present along with the maltiness. Some coffee and chocolate notes as well

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Slightly creamy

O: Pretty much a good any-time stout that has a solid lactose sweetness as well as some coffee and chocolate notes. Easy enough to drink (it is technically almost an imperial) and satisfying. Definitely worthy of a try if you're into the style

12oz bottle at fridge temp poured into a snifter. bottled on 12/12/11.

pours out black as night, a little ruby brown noticable on the edges. one fingers worth of tan head that faded within a minute to a creamy ring. tiny strands of lace.

not that big of an aroma. burnt grains, dark fruits as well as some fruity esters.

sweet burnt toasted grain, a little burnt lactose sugar, but the sweetness is quickly overtaken by a somewhat piney, earthy hop bitterness. cocoa and dark fruits on the finish. more of a lingering hop bitterness than i would expect for this style, but it seems to work.

medium bodied with kind of a dryer lighter finish. a little over carbonated.

kind of a different take on a milk stout, but not all bad. IMO this could use some more body and less of a grainy taste. but drinkable. im sure ill be drinking more of this sooner or later.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a standard pint glass.
Dark brown/black in color, with a short, tan head of foam.
Aroma-Faint chocolate note
Taste-Milk chocolate, coffee with cream, subtle hop prescence in the back ground. Very smooth and sweet but not overly so. Well balanced. Recommended.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Snifter.

Appearance: Very dark brown with initial tan head and light lacing.

Smell: Molasses, chocolate, licorice, sugar, cream and just an overall roastiness.

Taste: Rich and sweet roasted malts with molasses, chocolate, cream, licorice and sugar. Not much in the way of noticeable hops or roasted bite on the finish; just lingering sweetness. Really good taste, but borderline cloying sweetness.

Feel: Full, creamy body that is very smooth and luxuriant. However, the lack of anything approaching a dry finish keeps this score from being really high.

Overall: A strong example off Double Milk Stout, but I like the ones which attempt to rein in the sweetness a little more. Still, a tasty, luxurious brew.
