A - Pours with a small head of deep tan foam on top of an opaque, black body. The head settles out quite quickly and leaves only light lace.

S - Dark, malty notes of caramel, molasses, and smoky coffee.

T - Dark, sugary malt up front with notes of caramel and dark chocolate. More dark caramel in the middle with molasses and some spicy notes of clove and cinnamon. Finishes with complex notes of licorice, smoke, chicory, and dark cherries.

M - Medium-thick body, moderate carbonation, and a fairly dry finish.

D - Not bad, the aroma is a bit weak but the flavor profile is full and complex. It is unusually dry for a Southern Tier beer and this seems to suit it well, giving it a drinkability that you would never get in most of their other stouts.

Enjoyed this 12 oz bottle out of a snifter glass at Head Keepers in Greensberg PA.

A: Pours a dark black hue with a thin light brown lace, which dissolves in to a wispy lace leaving a nice trail down the glass.

S: Nice roasted malt and chocolate aroma.

T: Smooth chocolate and roasted flavor. Slightly sweet and very flavorful.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: This was a solid stout – smooth flavors and aroma with enough alcohol to make it interesting.

Pours an opaque black body with ruby hues at the bottom and a mocha colored head that quickly dissipates but leaves a constant thin, yet sticky lacing.

Aromas of roasted coffee and lactose leap from the glass with rich roasted malt and just a touch of earthy hops.

The flavor robust for a milk stout offering generous amounts of roasted coffee and malt with lactose similar to the aroma and hints of sweet milk chocolate and only a touch of earthy hops.

Medium in body and carbonation, at times offering the thicker palate one expects from an imperial yet with the lighter finish of a milk stout.

I guess this is a bit of a hybrid style, but one can certainly appreciate what ST was trying to accomplish and they did a darn good job in my opinion. This beer is delicious and offers the best of the milk stout with the best of the imperial/American double stout.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass. Bottled on 02/08/12.

Appearance: Pours a dark black with a little brownish red at the bottom. Lots of bubbles and a solid three fingers of creamy light tan head with good retention. Lots of lace on the glass.

Smell: Sweet dark roasted malts with big hints of chocolate and lactose. Also some hints of oatmeal, milk, coffee, and caramel. Light presence of earthy hops in the background along with a light hint of dark fruit. A pretty sweet and chocolate forward aroma.

Taste: Starts out with a big sweet taste of the roasted malts with a good amount of chocolate, oats, and lactose with a hint of coffee and milk. Midway comes a surprisingly strong presence of hops for a sweet stout. Hops are a mix of citrus and earthy hops. Pretty well balanced even though chocolate is the most noticeable taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Very creamy. Somewhat syrupy but very slick. Starts sweet and has a fairly drying finish.

Overall: A pretty solid stout. Nice hop presence for a milk/sweet stout.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick texture. There was a small amount of creamy, tan-colored head that quickly dissipated. Pretty good lacing.

S: An oddly muted aroma, but some hints of coffee and malt are apparent.

T: Tasted of coffee (more than you'd expect from a milk stout), malt, light hops, and a mild milk flavor. Much more robust and complex than most milk stouts, which is not a bad thing. Almost tasted more like a porter than anything else.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a smooth, creamy finish. Medium-bodied.

O: I'm not the biggest fan of the milk stout style - they tend to be thin and uninteresting - but the 2X Stout is an excellent, enjoyable beer.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown with ruby highlights and a modest head that is not very stouty; leaves a few strands of lace

Smell: Lactose and chocolate, with fruity undertones

Taste: The lactose comes through more than the chocolate, up front, and by mid-palate, there is both dark fruit and a hint of citrus; after the swallow, the lactose returns, leaving a sweet impression on the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: You can tell this is a Southern Tier beer, with the sweet and chocolate tones that have become the trademark of their stouts; I find them enjoyable in small quantities and this is no exception; glad it is is a 12 oz bottle

A: The beer is nearly jet black in color—only traces of amber are visible near the edge of the glass when it is held up to the light. It poured with a half finger high dense tan head that never completely faded away, consistently leaving a thin layer of bubbles on the surface, a thick ring around the edge of the glass and some lacing down the edges.
S: There are aromas of lactose sugar and chocolate in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and has flavors of lactose and milk chocolate; it almost tastes like a liquid version of chocolate mousse.
M: It feels medium-bodied and somewhat smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink and although it has an added kick with the extra strength, the alcohol is well hidden from the taste. It doesn’t have the creaminess compared to other beers in the style but it has lots of chocolate flavors.
