The head was minimal, and was beige. The beer color is non-translucent, dark brown.

The aroma is of roasted malts, and wood.

The taste is similar, but with the lactose sweetness, and a stronger than anticipated hop bite. On the low side of heavy bodied. It has low carbonation.

Not as good as I thought it would be. Just an okay beer.

Southern 2X Stout, on cask at Pony Bar, Hell's Kitchen, NYC.

Appearance: Served in a 14-oz glass, this is a nice-looking brew, with a big foamy head and seriously dark looks. Great temperature- warm as it should be. Low carbonation and some lacing.

Smell: Mild roastiness, chocolate powder. Bitter in the nose but not in the mouth. Dark sugar, cheap cocoa.

Taste: Follows nose without the hop/bitter profile. Cheap coffee, alright roastiness. Dairy, barnyard funk. Dirty puddles. I'm not a fan of the hemical/artificial chocolate taste, like they just dumped Nestle powder in the keg.

Mouthfeel: Good for the style, but not stellar. Low carbonation, medium body and flavor. Could use more body and flavor and robustness.

Overall: Very drinkable, so the score goes up. Nothing spectacular but fine. Like it better in a bottle.

"Brewd with 2 varietes of hops and 3 types of malts." 12 fl oz brown glass bottle with branded pry-off pressure cap acquired at a premium price at Ramirez Liquor and served into a Mitchells of Lancaster flared stem-tulip in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are high; I usually like Southern Tier. 7.5% ABV confirmed.

Served cold - straight from the fridge - and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a one finger head of lovely tan colour. Good cream. Good thickness. Good (~4+ minute) retention for the relatively high ABV. Body colour is a dark solid black. Opaque. Not quite a jet black. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Spot-on for the style but there's room for improvement. Not unique or special.

Sm: Milky notes, cream, dark malts, chocolate malt. Light hints of fleeting vanilla. No yeast character or alcohol is detectable. A mild to moderate strength aroma. Subtle lactose. No hop character is obvious.

T: Dark malts, a bit of caramel, and chocolate malt comprise the backbone/foundation. Milk chocolate. Some sugary sweetness. A light touch of vanilla. No yeast character or alcohol comes through. No obvious hop character. Not getting any roast. Nicely sweet - not overly so - though many will likely criticize this beer for that aspect. Overall, it's balanced if a biteen simple. Nicely subtle. I like the build. A tasty stout, all around.

Mf: Nicely creamy, smooth, and wet. Complements the flavour profile well. Pretty well carbonated. Apt. I wouldn't call it refreshing, but few beers in the style are. Good presence on the palate. Somewhat soft. Full-bodied.

Dr: A drinkable and enjoyable "double milk stout." I'd definitely get it again, even at the high price (~$6) I paid for it. A solid brew from Southern Tier. Really approachable and drinkable. I'll have no trouble killing this bottle alone. A tasty brew overall. Good execution.
