Pours a deep dark molasses with ruddy highlights and a coffee colored head.

Smells of coffee, plum, roasted barely and floral and bitter herb notes.

Bitter coffee and chocolate up front. It has a smooth creamy middle with roasted malt notes. Smooth to the finish with slight bitter herb and floral notes.

Southern Tier 2X Stout has a medium, cream-colored head, a dark brown, almost black, appearance, and just a little bit of lacing left behind. The aroma is a wonderful mix of milk/cream, dark-roasted malt, and sweet bread crust. Taste is the same, with low bitterness, but high acidity. Mouthfeel is heavy and slick, and Southern Tier 2X Stout finishes wet and sip-able.

had this from a nitro tap at southern tier and it was the best i've had in some time. Creamy, smooth and a perfect balance. i'm certain it isn't as good from a bottle but if you have the chance to get it from a nitro tap.... get it and enjoy!

July 2013, rating 4.3

On tap at Roast Public House (Madison). When I first had this in a bomber last summer, I didn't love it (rating 3.8). It seemed light weight and unimpressive at that time.

But now on tap I appreciate its virtues, while not feeling its drawbacks are as pronounced as from the bottle. The aroma is still not much to speak of. And the flavor isn't exactly competitive with the better imperial stouts (Southern Tier calls this a "double stout", aka, imperial). But the lively carbonation and lighter body fill a niche in the imperial stout genre: the refreshing, highly sessionable imperial stout. The flavor is an imperial coffee stout w/ no alchoholic phenols or sharpness, at all.

In the mouth it is lighter weight at first, like a porter, but then the creaminess pulls things together.
-----
Update 10/2014:

Uncannily reminiscent of Central Waters Brewhouse Stout.

I'm raising my 2013 rating (4.3). I still see what I was saying about it being an imperial coffee stout -- that's coffee without the cream. For being a "milk stout", this brew comes across as all roasty bitterness, with no sweetness, whatsoever.

Wife loves it for its lack of sweetness.

One of the best American brewed stouts I've tasted. Has that perfect balance between not too heavy, not too light, not too coffee flavored and not tasteless. Reminds me of some of the better stouts I had in Ireland during a month of stout tasting and general mayhem. And for those of you who have not experienced it, all Guinness does not taste the same.

I tried this from a Nitro-pushed tap, which adds to its creamy character. This is not a Hop-head beer, and I wouldn't recommend it to my friends who like those burnt coffee tasting stouts. This is just a well made American version of a not quite traditional Irish stout.
