This beer was brewed February 15 2012. It is almost 4 years old.
Appearance is an expected murky reddish brown. Decent head for its age, good lacing, seems content to remain a veil atop the body.
As soon as the lid comes off it is a huge wave of gorgeous aroma. Raisins and prunes and figs and cinnamon chewing gum (!?!). That gum kind of stopped my train of thought. And it keeps growing as I keep sniffing. Don't get me wrong, I dig it, but it is just... not what I was expecting? There's a lot of raisin bread in there. And almost some dusty home made McCaulley farmhouse cider. Not sweet. Dusty.
Mellow and approachable this brings the dusty aged characteristics the nose and appearance promised with the peak of candi sweet manifesting milder whispers of big red gum (after chewing a while... no more sharp cinnamon or sugar, just some comfortable reminders). Smoothe edges of dark fruit and caramel and, yes, there's the oak.
Still with decent carbonation for this age, but mellowed wonderfully. A sipper not because it punishes quick drinking, not from heat, but from a languid relaxation born of experience. I was wary after a less than impressed experience with Inequity, but this one works wonderfully for me as beer not clamoring for attention and bursting at the seams, but of one with a quiet confidence, a dignity with a single eyebrow raised.

Ahhh! This is what I needed. An outstanding brew. I bought this over a year ago (January 2014) and I patiently waited until now, and it was worth the wait.
This has the look, light brown with great clarity. The aroma is strong and sweet and fresh.
The taste is a perfect blend of sweet and bitter with not much harshness. This is a great example of the style at its best. The aftertaste is smooth.
This is a highly recommended barleywine. I wonder if I can get more.
