A - Pours a clear, dark gold with a thin white head that quickly dissipates. Leaves spotty lacing down the glass.

S - Tons of piney and floral hops. Finishes with some sweet fruits.

T- Floral hops followed by bitter fruits an finishes with some sweet malts.

M - Light, crisp and active on the tongue.

D - Smells good, tastes decent. Pretty easy to drink. Could drink a few consecutively

Poures a deep copper with a nice fluffy head that leaves sheets of lace down the glass, aromas of pine needles and some nuttiness pretty well balanced on the nose.A very resiny, piney hop flavor up front but a firm crisp malt backbone hold up well keeping the hops from being to overbearing. The finish is very abrupt not much finish going on and not much lingering flavors,a real well balanced IPA not overly hopped but with a real hop identity, recommended.

Appearance – Boy, did this one look the part. The body was a mostly clear orange that held up a gorgeous head that laced well and pitted all over the top of the liquid.

Smell – This one is smooth with some piney notes and a nice malt balance. I can pick up shades of grapefruit and a “green tea” scent.

Taste – This IPA starts off with a big grapefruit rush followed by some lovely floral hops and a nice, strong sugary-malt backbone. There’s a nice little bitter twang at the finish.

Mouthfeel – I felt that this was the ale’s strong point. It is incredibly smooth and exactly medium-bodied. Very nice.

Drinkability – The grapefruit is really strong here and might turn some off, but I lapped it up.

Comments – Thanks to the venerable OldFroth for sending this one my way.

I have had a few beers from Southern Tier and my thoughts remain the same after each one. Southern Tier makes a decent beer. Its not amazing and its not awful. It's just plain decent and its a beer that I will get if I'm out at a bar that has a limited selection. The beer has a decent helping of citrus and hops and doesn't leave an undesirable, lingering bitterness in your mouth. This is actually a beer that I thought tasted a little better as it got warmer, becoming sweeter but still maintaining a decent malty flavor. I poured the beer into a standard pint glass where it displayed nice color and mild carbonation. Overall, the Southern Tier IPA would be more of a casual beer that I would keep in my fridge. It goes well with spicy food and is reasonably priced.

Out of the bottle came an interesting reddish orange liquid. I don't see any precipitation, but the color is inviting. About a finger and a half of light tan head rose up with a decent density (not marshmallowy, but well thick). Trace amounts of lace were left to hang around as the glass became ever more empty.

The smell first delivered an unambiguous orange with some grapefruit hints. Stinky old hops. Big and sweet caramel malt base. Smells fruity and acidic.

The taste is sweet then bitter then sweet again. A curious transformation all in one swig! Good stuff. The alcohol is slightly perceivable in the aftertaste, but this one doesn't give you that dry finish. The bite is not in here. The finish remains too wet and juicy to be dry.

Hops doesn't exactly play second fiddle in this beer, but it is definitely sharing the limelight. Malt is in the house throwing its weight around. The mouthfeel gives me a nice oily impression and has a light medium body.

Served in nonic/

Look (3.5/5) - This one pours a rich caramel-gold colour. About two fingers of fluffy head with fairly good stand and good lacing rises from the pour. Clarity is pretty poor, I'd call it hazy.

Smell (3.5/5) - The nose is pretty well dominated by hops; resin and grapefruit stand. Some light breadcrust and biscuit malts. A hint of peppery spice on the finish.

Flavour (4/5) - Very similar to the nose. The malts taste a touch lighter than in many IPAs and APAs (again breadcrust and biscuit). Grapefruit is a bit more prominent on the palate and a bit of pine compliments the resin here as well. A bitter finish lasts for a while and is complimented quite nicely by the peppery flavours.

Feel (3.5/4) - Medium-light body that has some medium carbonation. A slight hint of oily, mouth-coating texture on the finish goes well with the flavours at play.

Drink (3.5/4) - Quite smooth and drinkable. Nice flavours. Like a lighter malt American IPA. Offers some nice new world hops.

This pours a medium amber with an orange hue and an off-white head with lasting retention.

There is citrus and floral hops aroma with a malty sweetness in the background. Herbaceous maybe grass character to the hops as well as a with some alcohol noted. It's not an in your face but it's good.

A medium-high citrus and resinous hops flavor with a medium-high bitterness and a moderate malt support. There is a lingering bitterness after the medium-dry finish.

This is a lively medium bodied brew with a moderate amount of carbonation.

A solid American IPA featuring American hops flavor with a over a good bitterness. I'll usually reach for a more aromatic IPA with intense bitterness but sometimes an easier drinking version like this one is a welcome change every now an then.

Appearance: Light copper, gold to orange. Almost no head when poured. Also, seems to be very low carbonation.

Aroma: Heavy American hops in the nose! Citrusy, piney, earthy. Very sweet smelling from the malt, too. Nice balance.

Taste: Very hoppy! Sweet malt turns to bitter American hops with the usual citrus, grapefruit flavor. Finishes clean without being too bitter.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Leaves mouth feeling crisp, although slightly cloying. Not overpowering, but does coat the mouth a bit.

Drinkability: Highly drinkable. This is easy drinking. Could easily hold up against any IPA. Enjoyable with every sip. Smooth, refreshing, delicious...

Comments: Excellent IPA! One of my favorites to date. Others are overly bitter, but not this one. This is well balanced, smooth & enjoyable. The only downside to this is that is does taste similar to other Southern Tier beers. They all seem to use the same hop bill which leaves them all tasting similar.

12oz brown bottle with cool green artwork. Pours from the bottle a dark orange and amber color with a half inch of taut off white foam that leaves lots of spotty lacing across the glass. Aromas of green hops off the bat. Tropical fruity and citric with pine resin accents. Sweet caramel in the background. A lovely mix of leafy hop scents.

First sip brings some sweet caramalized maltiness that's a touch doughy. It leads the way for a nice mix of citric, piney hops that have some tropical fruit notes as well. Medium bitterness with a good balance between the hops and malts. Finishes with lingering leafy hop flavor that makes you want to take another sip.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, smooth and creamy. Perfect carbonation. This is a drinkable IPA that I'd imagine would be a good session brew. Easy drinking and full of good hoppy flavors. Definetly an IPA worth seeking out from the great state of NY. Thanks to kmpitz2 for saving one of these for me!

A little Friday afternoon beer while I work on some homework. Received from Jay23 in Secret Bunny '07. Thanks!

Clear, orange-light caramel mix. Little head on the pour and what was there disappeared to only a ring around the glass and some intermittent bubbles on the surface.

Aroma is nice and simple, but still has a little strength. Fairly clean malting. Presents a little biscuit and a little crystal malt, not much though. Mostly hops in the nose though. Nice floral and citrus blend, some tangerine rind and a touch of straw.

Taste has a bit more malting evident and less floral hops. Malts are more upfront and have more bready, dinner roll to it. More straw and herbal hops in the finish. Some lingering bitterness. Pretty good.

Mouthfeel is relatively light and crisp. Coats the mouth okay initially but washes away with a little bread flavor and lingering bitterness.

Good drinkability. Not a huge standout of the style, but definately a solid offering here. This would be my fallback IPA if I lived in the area. Nice and refreshing brew.

Pours a lightly cloudy, solid 2 fingers of thick head. Ample lacing, lots of carb.

Light and fresh. Maybe malt. Not much present.

Medium hop, light pine, little light malt. Somewhat nice little malt.

Medium bodied, well balanced with ABV. Could use a little more malt, mape some more aroma hop.

Id have more, but not exceptional. Id probably look for other IPAs instead of heading back.

Poured into a straight pint glass.

Appearance - Moderately yellow on the lighter side, pale, crisp haze with no particles. Poured with almost a finger of head, not too much. Lacing is beautiful and abundant.

Smell - Not pungent at all really, distant hops.

Taste - Surprisingly mild and drinkable. It certainly isn't hop-heavy which initially disappointed me. But it's enjoyable and humble in its own right. Well rounded. It lingers with polite understatement. I would almost call this a pale ale on the heavier side.

Mouthfeel - On the slight heavier side of average. Pleasant. Pleasant. Semantic satiation.

Overall a very drinkable, modest IPA that I would consider offering not-so-hop-heads if I don't finish the other five tonight.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: The color was orangey amber with a foamy off white head. Its head slowly fades to just a thin covering of bubbles.

Smell: Hops attack the nose with spruce pine, resin and light citrusy hop aromas.

Taste/Mouth feel: The flavor hits your tongue with bold piney and citrusy hop flavors. Malt flavor lies underneath and offers some balance with a mildly sweet and bready tone. The palate has a slightly oily smooth texture with a medium body and soft carbonation.

Notes: This is one solid IPA that has good flavor and drinkability.
