It ends up a burnt orange, just the slightest bit murky. The head was a medium egg-shell white with good retention and lace.
I am a bit surprised at the mellow character of an 7.3 % IPA, it just doesn't jump out of the glass and go for the nostrils like some do. Bits of tropical citrus and bubblegum hop notes do their best to stay slightly above a toasty dark bread malt backbone. Other than that, I'm not gettin' much nose action.
Solid bitterness comes through in the flavor, which is still on the lack-luster end of things. Juicy tangerine flavors and a good grassy finish comprise of the hop bill. A bit of buttery smoothness and generous sweet toffee and grain balance things out more than I like. The beer doesn't indicate a brewed on date - but it hasn't sat but a few weeks since purchase - so I just can't be sure of the true nature.
The medium body has a nice chewy residue which lingers despite an otherwise slick feel. The carbonation is right on the money, putting everything on an even keel. As far as IPA's go, it's OK. As far as Southern Tier goes, buy the 2XIPA, you'll be glad you did.
