12 oz. bottle poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass. Bottled on date 5/30/13.

Appearance: Pours a crystal clear amber-gold color with a one-finger white head, which dissipates quickly. Leaves a nice lacing down the glass.

Smell: Lots of toasted bready malt along with some spicy yeast character. The aroma is somewhat intriguing, although I wouldn't really describe it as appealing either.

Taste: Heavy on the bready malt again, with some sweet caramel coming through. Earthy hops come in on the finish along with a healthy dose of hop bitterness. While certainly not bad, there just isn't much here to hold my attention.

Mouthfeel: Full-bodied and smooth, with medium carbonation.

Overall: Making a "double" version of a steam beer is certainly an interesting experiment, but ultimately one that in my opinion does not have to be repeated

A: Pours a crystal clear brassy yellow in color with minimal amounts of visible carbonation and some hints of amber highlights. The beer has a very thin white head that quickly reduces to a very thin ring that just about makes its way around the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Very light aromas of light fruit yeast and hints of toasted bready malts.

T: Light to moderate flavors of bready malts with some hints of toffee and light fruits (apple and apricot). Light hints of alcohol and some light to moderate amounts of earthy hops that contribute a light amount of bitterness in the finish.

M: Medium bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth with some hints of dryness in the finish.

O: I think the suped up version of a California Common/Steam (higher ABV) is an interesting idea but needs to have the booze a little more well hidden from the taste to be really enjoyable for me.

Picked this up as part of a mix-a-six because I was intrigued by the style and also because Southern Tier's 2X series has been great.

Appearance: Poured a deep copper from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass with a thin head that disappears quickly, leaving nice lacing along the glass. Very clear with noticeable amounts of carbonation.

Smell: I can't pick out too much but perhaps caramel malt and a bit of fruit and maybe some pine notes. Tough to pinpoint, but a nice smelling beer.

Taste: Somewhat of a letdown to say the least, with a unique taste to it. Some bready notes and also a bit of caramel malt in there, but this one doesn't beg me to keep drinking.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with nice carbonation and no burn from the alcohol. This drinks fairly easily and isn't overly filling.

Overall: This wasn't bad, but I had certainly expected better. This is a unique style and I applaud Southern Tier for trying this but it definitely isn't something I feel the need to buy again.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a copper color and a clear texture. There was a small amount of foamy head that quickly dissipated. Fair lacing.

S: An interesting aroma of hops, malt, and a fruity element.

T: Tasted of a moderate amount of malt, a surprisingly high amount of hops and fruit (apples, it would seem). Not exactly what I expected from a steam beer (this one is much hoppier), but still pretty tasty.

M: A well-carbonated beer with a somewhat harshly bitter finish. LIght-bodied.

O: While this beer is somewhat uneven in spots, it's still an appealing beer. Drinkable.

I hope that Southern Tier's future business plans won't come to having to brew a triple steam beer. Or maybe a quad-steam.

On to the beer though. High grain presence it seems. Quite a lot of malt sweetness as well. Almost seems boozy, from a whole whopping 8% it's carrying. Decent enough to drink, just nowhere near as inspiring or interesting as other brews Southern Tier has done.

Poured out as a nice deep golden color with a soapy white head on top. The lacing is minimal and the retention is thin. The smell of the beer has a big amount of toasted malt on the nose, not much in the way of hops. The taste has the same toasted flavor as what the nose was kind of giving a preview too. The beer is a little sweet with a subtle bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a pretty good carbonation to it. Overall this beer is decent. Nothing too crazy but was nice to try.

A: Brilliantly transparent amber body, with a huge huge foamy white head. Very good head retention. Great lacing, leaving foamy chandeliers on the glass.

S: Faint spicy notes...I can't specify the spices it just has a spicy scent. Light sweet caramel scent as well. There is a yeasty smell to the beer, which is surprising given how clear the beer is.

T: Very nice mellow toasty sweet bread flavors. It has a taste similar to banana bread without an actual banana flavor, just the sweetness you get from it. There is some caramel flavor as well, right before the flavor of alcohol pops up towards the end of the sip. The end of the drink is greeted by a deep but not overpowering bitterness. There's a cedar flavor in the end as well. Similar to the scent, I do taste that yeast flavor in the beer.

M: The mouthfeel is very robust and filling. There is no question that you are drinking this beer.

O: This is a very memorable beer. There is a lot going on, so I wouldn't call it a clean beer. The only downfall could be that it has too much going on but there seems to be enough separation in the flavors from keeping it too muddled. I think that fans of sweeter styles of beer such as Bocks will really enjoy this one. It has enough bitterness to cut through the sweetness at the end, which really helps out with drinkability. While looking, smelling, and tasting the beer it is clear that effort was put into making a good quality beer.
