Chalice pour: Clear amber, low head and nice lacing.
Rye with some dank citrus on the nose. Bready malts punch through it, along with a bit of alcohol.
With the taste, the rye gives way to citrus hops, which then gives way to bitter earth, and a grainy bite of alcohol. Flavors of this style don't develop where I expected they would. The rye is there, and this ends up having a nice rye-led cereal grain aspect to the flavor, but it still ends up muddled with an odd spice, which translates as detectable alcohol, somehow.
Mouthfeel is medium thin, well carbonated though. Some syrup. Dry.
Overall, a mild disappointment. Rye brews have grown on me lately, but this example doesn't quite meet the standard numerous others have. Still, a solid brewery.

A - Murky lemon honey and amber yellow orange. Low almost non exsistant off white head with whispy cobweb lacing that shows up out of nowhere. Also moderate continued carbonation. - 4

S - Faint rye in the glass sharp rye in the bottle. This beer wants to be let out. Faint sweet citrus honey notes. - 3.5

T - Sweet initial tastes and sharp rye aftertaste. Hoppy without all the hops almost. Very playfully bounces from sweet and bitter. - 4

M - Payfully smooth and fizzy. This low head seems like it might be wrong but no in fact it's quite right for this style. - 4

O - of the 5-10 rye beers I've tried to date this might be the most delicate and best for a newcomer. - 4

Appearance: Pours a clear copper color capped by a couple of inches of foam; a reasonable amount of splashy lace lingers

Smell: Peppery/spicy/minty rye tones waft above caramel malt

Taste: A bit of caramel lays the foundation and then the rye and the hops take over; tasting a bit like rye whiskey, the peppery/spicy/minty tones assault the palate, with piney hops taking over where the rye leaves off; nicely blended into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: This is an interesting beer and I wish I liked it more but I am not a fan of the rye flavors being this dominant and clashing with the hops; worth a try as I always tip my hat to a brewer who decides to try something different

BOD 8/31/13. Clear light amber pour with a slight dark ruby cast. Massive head with exceptional lacing and retention. Nice, but somewhat subtle, nose of caramel and rye over a spicy background. Heavy medium body with a nice oily creamy texture. Well carbonated with a nice effervescent finish. Even at one year of age, the flavor profile is outstanding with a complex balance. It begins with a spicy character that flows to nice rye notes. In the middle, caramel sweetness flows into a light hop flavor blend (dank, pine and citric) and light bitterness. The finish is long and leaves you with a nice rye spiciness over hop notes and bitterness. Even aged, this one is up there with the best.
