Good, well rounded beer. Pours with a deep head. The aroma is bright and citrusy. The body is pretty well carbonated and has a nice body, not too light. The first thing I taste is the citrus flavor, and a second or two later a fair bitterness. It's not too hoppy but is balanced by the tangy rye flavor. Nothing is overwhelming but complement each other. Nice balance. Overall a pretty enjoyable beer. Nothing unique, but nicely executed.

12 oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. Bottled on 9/3/13 (~3 1/2 months old)

Pours out a very clear light amber, copper color. Small, but retentive layer of slightly off white head, spotty lacing holds the glass well.

Pungent, resinous hops, with some spicey rye that blends with a semi sweet bready malt.

Slightly more hoppy than malty, but it is nearly balanced. Resinous, dry citrusy hops meets spicey rye and bready malts.

Kind of a bitey carbonation, some spice from the rye lingers, but mostly you get the resinous hoppy bitterness that lingers after the finish. Medium in body.

Almost more of an IPA, decent beer non the less.

Bottled August 22; I'm assuming that's not too old to enjoy the beer.

A: Clear golden-amber color with two fingers of frothy head, which is resilient and supported by a ton of flowing bubbles. Lots of lacing.

S: Citrus hops, spicy rye, sweet caramel. Some floral notes too. Not overpowering, and pretty pleasant.

T: Caramel and toffee lead the way, before rye takes over. The finish has a lot of citrus hop flavor and a light toasted quality to go with the rye. Flavors mesh very well, and the alcohol is well hidden, especially given that neither the malts nor the hops are in your face.

M: Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation, pretty smooth and creamy. A little dry on the finish.

O: I really enjoyed this one, even if each individual category wasn't particularly remarkable (i.e. 4.25+). This beer's qualities seem to really complement each other well, in a way that reminds me of Bell's Two Hearted and Ballast Point Sculpin. Well crafted and definitely something I'll keep an eye out for in the future.

Kind of golden amber and mostly clear, with a pretty decent head and lacing.

Aroma and flavor are peppery spiced and herbal, with perhaps a touch of peppermint and a good malty, rye backbone. Most enjoyable and along the lines of what I expect from a rye beer.

Body is medium and surprisingly drinkable for such a high ABV beer. A slight sweetness finalizes the sip.

Always love southern tier.

We crack the top, pouring a brew of dense maple syrup coloring into generic pint glasses. The head stands two fingers tall and is composed of fat and foamy sandpaper bubbles, retaining excellently. Sticky geographical and patterned lacing is left around the glasses. No haze or sediment is noted, and carbonation appears to be active. The aroma boasts sweet floral hops atop a stable, hearty base of caramel, pale, rye, and raw barley graininess, elderberry and cherry fruitiness, medicinal and clovey phenols, candy corn and singed toffee sugars, banana esters, brandy sugars, white flour, bread pudding, raisin, pumpernickel breadiness, buttercream, and fresh ginger. Our first impression is that the flavoring follows the nose nicely, with bitter rye bite that excites and opens up the palate. As we sip, the taste begins with lime flesh, citric and floral hops, earthen grassiness, chlorine echoes, rye and pale malty cleanliness, bitter metallic bite, floury yeastiness, and roasty vanilla bean. The middle comes to a peak with an odd mix of fruity cherry, prune, and apricot with bitter plastics, barks, ethanol, coin, and earthen, floral hoppiness, for a cloying, yet surprisingly burning swallow. The end washes through with a melding bitterness of rye grain, corn meal and white flour, salt lick, toffee sugars, smoky plastics, roasty caramel malts, red grapey sweetness, toasted corn and husk, green and resinous grassiness, and floral and nectary hops. The aftertaste breathes of musk, cherry and plum flesh, dry rye, corny adjuncts, fumy booze, ink, penicillin medicinals and moldiness, coal, stagnant mineral water, chalky chocolate maltiness, malted milk balls, and oily citric rind hoppiness. The body is medium to full, and the carbonation is medium. Each sip gives great slurp and smack, cream, and froth, and vigorous pop and glug. The mouth is left wonderfully cooled and heavily coated, with eventual puck, but only slight dryness across the hard palate. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks very nicely.

Overall, our favorite aspect of this beer is its robust dedication to the rye base through the flavoring. The taste remains flushed with rye at every turn, taking the form of the savory, the bitter, and the sweet. It mixes well at each of these stops with the surrounding fruit, hops, and medicinals, keeping things warm, hearty, and pleasant. This is really a fantastic brew. It is different enough from not only their stock, but of the entire local upstate NY stock, making it a stand out on numerous levels, all while keeping it heavy enough to appeal to people seasonally. It is also kind of a blend between the dark and the light, and with hoppy enough brightness to appeal to the hop heads alike. Their best “2X” to date.
