Pours black with a thick tan head. Smell is a crazy mix of carnival meets pumpkin pie scents. Malty pie crust, chocolate, caramel, toffee, peanuts all mixed up together. A lot like the Pumking but with more roasty smells from the darker grain.
First sip brings a lot of roasted grain flavor, a bit bitter and acrid. Some hints of pie spices follow but subdued by the dark grain flavor. Finishing the flavor up is some hop flavor and bitterness, a bit of piney resin sweetness to mingling with the malt.
Finishes rather clean for such a complexity of flavor. Roasted grain holds back the spicing enough to keep it from getting overwhelming on your palate. This is one of the better pumpkin stouts I have had and the brewer has found a way to marry the flavors of pumpkin bie and roasted grains without muddling them or overpowering my taste buds. Surprisingly drinkable!
