Ominous appearing black bodied ale topped with a tawny cap of foam that recedes to a skien. Not much lacing.

Smells of cooked pumpkin, allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon and that delicious buttery pie crust scent I know so well from Pumking. Matter of fact it smells damn similar if not exactly the same. It's one of my favorites and already now I'm like one of Pavlov's dogs..

Taste, yep, it has all the underpinnings of the legendary Pumking. Mashed pumpkin. Allspice. Nutmeg. Cinnamon. Buttery pie crust. Yet here are some differences..stronger graham cracker and molasses notes. Slightly more hop bitterness. What could be construed as semi-sweet bitter dark chocolate. More alcohol presence. And definitely more roasty and toasted.

Mouthfeel is a tad bit too light which caught me off guard, although it holds together well across the tongue.

Conclusion: Warlock..it's pumking's sinister brother. It's ephemeral stuff for those that love a delicious pumpkin ale. It shares DNA but somewhere got toasted and roasted, and a bit angry. Good stuff.

Poured from bottle into a snifter

Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown nearly black color with a small one finger cream colored head. The head fades very fast, leaving only the tracest level of lace on the sides of the glass and almost no foam on the top of the brew.

Smell – The aroma is of a deep roasted pumpkin aroma with lots of dark roasted malts. The dark malts give aromas of chocolate and a little bit of toast. Along with these smells are some aromas of a caramel and molasses sweetness as well as some big of spice of nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice. Overall it is the pumking with added darker malt aromas.

Taste – The taste begins with a roasted pumpkin and spice flavor of nutmeg and cinnamon. Right from the start there are flavors of a toast nature with some sweet flavors of caramel and molasses. As the taste moves on it dries out some with the sweeter flavors dwindling. As these flavors dwindle a chocolate flavor comes to the tongue. The chocolate gets more bitter as the taste moves on with more roasted flavors, some char and more spice joining the rest. In the end, a dark, roasted, and spiced pumpkin flavor is left on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is medium in terms of its thickness with a carbonation level that is on the slightly below average side. Both are fairly appropriate for the darker flavors of the brew, although even more thickness may have really helped the overall roasted and pumpkin tastes of the brew slightly more.

Overall – A rather nice take of a dark pumpkin beer, with a decent blend of pumpkin and stout tastes. It’s good, but not quite as enjoyable as the original pumking as it lacks some balance with the roasted flavors never really melding well with the spiced pumpkin.

A - Black body that has brown edges when held to the light. A rather scant beige head fades to a thin ring relatively quickly

S - Pumpkin is very forward and definitely commands presence in the nose. It's pretty much all I can dig out of the aroma at all. Very autumn-like and warming a la pumpkin pie.

T - Very interesting. Reminds me a LOT of Pumpking in the pumpkin notes, but melded with a rich stout. Reminds me of something like a pumpkin and chocolate flavored cheesecake. Very delicious. A touch of bitterness on the finish.

M - Super smooth and decadent, although I think a beer like this would benefit from lower carbonation.

O - A delicious beer that is very rich. One bomber is plenty, anything beyond that is going to get cloying but that is to be expected with a beer like this. If you like Pumpking and you like stouts, you will love this beer.

22 oz. bottle poured into a Cigar City snifter. Bottled 9/17/13.

A - Pours midnight black with a few fingers of fluffy brick mortar colored head. Leaves behind a nice tiered lacing as I drink.

S - Smells strongly of hearty grain, bran, and baked pumpkin seeds. Chocolate, brown sugar, and cinnamon take a backseat to the strong pumpkin flesh aroma. It is more rich than sweet. Tempting aroma.

T - Starts with a heavy dosage of roasted malts and sweet vanilla. Creamy pumpkin and pie spices follow. Roasty baker's and milk chocolate on the back end with a touch of bitter char. None of the 8.6% comes through int he flavor.

M - Creamy with light, velvety carbonation. I drank this one very slowly and the flavors improved over time, but the mouthfeel did not.

O - I have been anticipating this beer for a while. I really enjoyed the balance between the typical sweet pumpkin flavors and the roasty stout qualities. It smells absolutely delicious. This is now among my favorite pumpkin beers. Southern Tier knows its way around a pumpkin brew.

Pours a cola brown with some light passage at the edges, minimal head. The nose is very similar to pumking. Heavy graham cracker, pumpkin spice, some chocolate, not a whole lot of roast or stout quality to speak of. Taste is very pumpkin and spice forward with some sweet chocolate at the back. Not nearly as much stout quality as I was hoping for, a touch of bitterness towards the end. Mouthfeel is thin for style with mellow carbonation. Overall, quite tasty but I was hoping for more robust chocolatey flavors.
