Growler as part of a trade...thanks Lady of Much Beer! Poured into a Brooklyn Brewery snifter...Brooklyn meet Austin!

A) Nice cloudy lemon and orange...head quickly dissipates.

S) Bananna and cloves.

T) I fell in love with this style last summer, the combination of the clove, banana and bubble gum is pedominant as it should be. There is a nice bitterness at the end which quickly goes away.

M) Probably a little less carbonated given the travel this guy had to take.

O) I can see the popularity....need to get to Austin!

Growler (Thanks Josh): Poured a hazy lightly dirty beige color weizen with a nice foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light bubblegum notes with some what notes and some light cloves makes this a very interesting drink. Taste is also a good mix between some bubblegum notes with some light cloves and light banana ester. Body is quite full with good carbonation. Well brewed though I usually prefer my weizen with more banana ester but glad to had a chance to try this beer.

Poured from 64oz growler in SA Perfect Pint glass. Long-time want, and huge thanks to raffy313 for filling it with the unsolicited Christmas present!

Appearance: Body is cloudy golden white in color. Head is fluffy white but not terribly long lasting, and the lacing is minimal. From the appearance I'd think this to be a wit instead of a here, but it's a nice color.

Smell: Quite a bit going on in the nose. Banana and clove as expected from a hefeweizen are there, but there's also a powerful sweet (candy?) smell, and some wheat.

Taste: Basically tastes like it smells, with the addition of some nice vanilla notes.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, adequately carbed, and no alcohol taste at all.

Drinkability: All night long. This would be a go-to tap in the summer if it were local.

Overall: I've been wanting to try this guy for a while and I'm glad I had the chance. It's an excellent hefe, and an excellent beer in general. I don't think it's quite on par with the best German hefeweizens, but it's definitely as good as any American version that I've ever had.

64oz growler poured into Hair of the Dog tulip reviewed on 10/21/11.

A: Pours a pale hazy straw with white head that dissipates rather quickly and leaves some lacing around glass.

S: Pale malt and wheat with yeast, banana and clove notes. Aroma is pretty typical to a Bavarian hefeweizen.

T: Very light with wheat, pale malt and similar banana and clove esters as the aroma but not as strong.

M: Thin light body with lots of carbonation and dry finish.

O: One of the best Bavarian style hefeweizens that I have had from the US but still not as good as many of the true ones from Germany.

Poured from a growler into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a very cloudy bright yellow color with two fingers of white head. The head fades to a layer on top of the pour.

Smell: Quite delicate. Crisp with some banana and clove. Lots of wheat with some slightly tart citrus.

Taste: A lot like the smell. Banana and some clove. There aren't really any bubble gum notes here. There is still a lemony note from the wheat, but I'm enjoying it.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with aggressively tingly carbonation and a slightly dry finish.

Overall: This is a really good beer. Super easy to drink, it would be a superb summer beer.

Received today tjkinate. Thanks!

Pours a murky yellow with a thin white head.

Good lemon and bubblegum aroma with banana and faint hints of clove.

First taste is heavy in lemon with some bubblegum. Lots of good banana flavor throughout similar to the nose. Finishes crisp with light noble hop bitterness. Just a touch of clove.

Thin mouthfeel and good carbonation level. About right for the style.

Finally get to try this highly rated beer and it doesn't disappoint. Subtle flavors are spot on. Banana and lemon are highly present and clove is low, just how I like my hefes. Oustandingly smooth. I could drink this all day.

Thanks to johnsaulrubio for sending this growler my way.

A - Pours a pale, hazy yellow with a one and a half finger off-white head that fades slowly. There is on lacing at all.

S - Strong lemon hits me first, followed by some wheat.

T - Lemon and wheat are first, followed by some mild spice, and finishes with a slight banana taste.

D - Tons of carbonation with a light body.

O - A nice citrus, well balanced Hef.

Old notes, thanks to Matt (starrdogg) for this beautiful beer.

Pours very hazy yet bubbly with a dry orange straw color with a fizzy head that dies to a ring. Great look.

S: Awesome smell, this is the best part easily. I appreciate the round and balanced aroma here, it's just a nice tight package of smells that hit all the stuff you'd expect very well-whest, hefe yeast, ripe fruit and banana, clove, and more. Also has some undertones of other great savory sweet and almost BBQ-esque stuff. Interesting and appetizing.

T: Nice taste, but certainly falls short of the aroma for me. Pleasant lemon zest, a little clove, banana, wheat, licorice, and other kitchen spices and of course Germanic yeast/malt.

M: Very smooth, but seems pretty thin in terms of the body of the beer. I know its 5.2%, but I've had true German hefe that have had tons of body and less ABV.

Overall super drinkable and refreshing.

Growler courtesy of ftsgibson. Thanks! Even shipped it in a fancy styrofoam pack to keep it optimal, was still cold when I received it.

Cap opens with a nice pop.

It pours into my Erdinger glass a nice hazy gold with a great fluffy white head that sticks for awhile. Glad to see it is still nicely carbonated, it was filled and sealed well.

The smell is mostly banana with some sweet smelling wheat malt.

The flavor is lighter and more subtle than most American hefeweizens, and I like that. It has again a thick wheat character. The banana returns in the flavor along with a nice dash of clove. Lemon in the finish as you go.

The mouthfeel is the only thing I think could be improved here and it very well may just be that I am having it from a growler.

The wheat in this one give is a unique flavor but it is proabbly the best American Hefeweizen out there and better than a lot of the neutered imported German Weissbiers. However, this doesn't stack up to a fresh weissbier on tap in Bavaria, about as good as a US brewery is gonna get it without importing the exact brewing equipment, hops, malt, and yeast.

only ones better for me:
1 Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier
2 Mahrs Bräu Saphir Weiss
3 Schneider Georg Schneiders Wiesen Edel-Weisse
4 Schneider Weisse Original
5 Andechser Weissbier Hefetrüb
6 Erdinger Festweiße
7 Erdinger Weissbier (Hefe-Weizen)

That is good company

Appearance is hazy straw yellow with good head surviving the clumsy growler fill from Whole Foods. Thin head seems here to stay.

Pleasant aroma, phenolic with some banana and a bit of sulphur.

Taste is a superb hefe, light banana and strong clove. Amazing flavor, wow.

Mouthfeel is warm and thick with a gentle tingle. Warmth is stands out.

Overall - This beer is a real experience, one that I don't expect in this style. Perhaps the hefe for big beer lovers.

Growler shared by Matt. Thanks!

A: Hazy straw color with a mountainous white head. Lacing is scattered.

S: Tons of clove, an overwhelming  amount. Faint banana and wheat. The clove is too powerful, making this sort of one note.

T: Even more clove than in the aroma, sort of dominating. Light banana. Some wheat. Too much clove.

M: Light body with high carbonation.

Overall: Not as good as remembered. The clove is overwhelming. I liked this a lot more when I had it in 2008.

Many thanks to atxdelivery for this growler. This beer might have been my very first major want when I joined BA. Poured into a Paulaner Weisbier glass, but I think I'll go for a big mug for my next glass.

Appearance
The beer is a cloudy, lemon yellow. The beer's body looks a little bit strange. It's not as fully clouded as many bottled hefeweizens I've had, and the color is a touch lighter. The head is nice, but ultimately well controlled. Its pure white and faded down to next to nothing after a couple sips. A few rings of lace get washed away.

Aroma
Quite bready, especially at first. Tons of bubblegum pushes through. Spicy clove bursts forth with some swirling. Very little hops but what is there lends a little bit of grassiness. Banana is keyed back, which is a little disappointing to me, but the bubblegum and clove and both very strong and nice.

Taste
There must be a TON of wheat in this one. So much so that it is providing some of that tart edge that some wheat beers can have. It has a dry, spicy, clove flavor with a little bit of bubblegun sweetness on the back end. A flash of grassy and lemony hops and faded banana notes are there as well. Banana waits until the end to halfway peek out.

Mouthfeel
Nice and dry and light bodied. A clean finish lingers with an ever so delicate clove spiciness. Carbonation is effervescent and really goes well with the dryness.

Overall
This is a very good beer; its crazy easy to drink. But is it one of the best Hefeweizens? Naw, I don't think so. I'll still quaff the hell out of this growler though.

In the glass it looks like a yeasty effervescent gold color that shows potential. The aroma is lacking the pop or pronounced yeasty banana aromas i look for and desire in a great hefe, there is some faint wheat like aromas but i need more. The flavors are in the same boat with a hole in it, there is that wheat aspect with light bubblegum and a lacking clove/banana background that needs a megaphone. mouthfeel is a bit less then creamy with lacking carbination. weihenstephaner kills it, with violence.

Thanks Shaun for the growler! Pours a cloudy and hazy straw yellow color with a nice thick white head especially after an aggressive pour. The aroma is of belgian yeast, banana, and wheat. Smooth tasting with a fine balance of banana, clove, and wheat with a slight watered-down after taste along with the yeast. Zero alcohol taste. Very refreshing. This is one overhyped hefe and I've had plenty better ones - so this was a bit disappointing after I traded quite a bit for this growler. But, in any case, sure glad to have tried this one from Austin!

glad i got the chance to try this without having to trade for it. looks like your typical hefeweizen. aroma was muted, some graininess. taste and mouthfeel were your typical hefeweizen. nice body for the abv. i just don't get why this is rated so much higher than others of the style, it's just a standard hefeweizen, any fresh one of the style would compare.

This growler was shared at Alewatcher and Oreo's birthday bash. It poured a hazy, murky vibrant gold in color with a white lacing around the glass. It looked great. The aromas, oh man! It wreaks of sweet creamed corn. I sure as hell didn't expect that to happen. It's awkward and obnoxious. I expected yeast, cloves, bananas but got none of that. The flavors too, of overly sweet creamed corn. I didn't think that was possible. It's like a crazy corn casserole in a glass. It drinks medium in body and leaves the sweet grainy flavor behind. How are people saying that this is on the level of Weihenstephaner? Dear god they aren't even in the same league, let alone comparable. I'm extremely thankful for getting to try this one but man was it a disappointment.

Ahh, review #600. It's been a long time coming... nearly 6 years. I always get hung up on 'milestone' reviews, and take way too long to put 'em up. Not sure why. In any case, big, big thanks to BA johnsaulrubio for hooking me up with one of my oldest wants. We opened this fine growler at a tasting of immature, yet experienced BAs and it did rather well. I personally love a good Hefe, so perhaps I'm biased...

A. Pretty standard here, hazy semi-filtered gold with a fizzy white head that sadly doesn't stick around like it could. Fades faster than I'd like and leaves only a bit of lacing. Fizzy.

S. Now here we go... this is excellent. Heavy on clove, with sour banana, tight and complementary, nothing wrong here at all. Classic Hefe, characterful, slightly doughy. Just great stuff. Only thing that could help the nose would be more of it.

T. Runs towards the easier, more sessionable side of things... all the classic required flavors (banana, grain, light sweetness, clove-spice) are here and it's extremely clean, but seems lighter than some of the best German examples.... no surprises otherwise here, very quenching, moreish, refreshing.

M / D Excellent carbonation, slightly dry and banana finish, zips along to Total Refreshment. I can see why this would make sense coming from the wicked hot climes of Texas. Still... it's not as good as Weihenstephaner to me. But it is darn good.

Live Oak Hefeweizen is one of the best American versions of the style I've had, second only to Dancing Man, which is less to style than this. An exceptional beer; Live Oak has this classic style nailed. If you live close enough to get this on a regular basis, you are in luck.

Onwards - to review 700 and beyond!

Huge thanks to biglobo8971 for sharing this one. Poured from a growler into a snifter.

A- Hazy yellow straw appearance, ½ finger to one finger off white head, well carbonated, nice lacing and retention.
S- Awesome aroma, the smell is amazing, banana, cloves, hints of citrus, lemn zest, very well balanced, hints of breadiness, just smooth and refreshing.
T- Taste as it smells, banana, cloves, lemon and orange aromas, slight citrus, really smooth and delicious taste to this beer, hints of spice, nice balanced sweetness to it, perfect for a hot summer day, slightly dry on the aftertaste.
M- Medium to light mouthfeel, well carbonated, really smooth and crisp.
O- Very impressed by this beer, amazing Hefe, one of the best of its style. Smooth and refreshing, perfect for a hot summer day, really easy drinkability.

A huge thanks to my good buddy Curtis for sending me this growler. Shared with some hooligans last weekend.

The appearance is a hazy, straw yellow color with a thick, white head that leaves ample lacing on the glass. The head hangs out indefinitely. So far, so good.

The aroma brings a good bit of banana and wheat.

This beer is extremely well balanced, and goes down effortlessly. What a perfect warm weather beer. The feel is smooth, light (without seeming thin), and creamy. Without question, this is the best American brewed hefeweizen I have ever had. Superb.

64oz. Growler provided by Huhzubendah, thanks babydoll!

I'm not the biggest wheat beer fan, but who the fuck does not enjoy a quality Hefeweizen on a warm day?

Poured into a Stone pairing glass and I can already smell it. Pours a traditional cloudy yellow with a bright white and creamy head. Smells wonderful and it full of banana, citrus, clove, and spice. Really fresh and pungent. Taste is so refreshing and bright. Full of flavor and this is incredibly balanced. Great carbonation with some creaminess.

I'm always a little skeptical of such highly hyped beers, but this truly lives up to the hype. About as good as a Hefeweizen can get.

Growler poured into a tall weizen glass. Thanks Rubio for the excellent trade. Unfortunately the first growler sent my way leaked and Rubio promptly replaced it. Thanks again.

Cloudy golden hay colored with a very creamy moderate sized white head. The head retention is average, and lacing just meh. Strange.

Strong banana, clove-spice, light sweetness and some refreshing tartness in the aroma; pretty standard for the style but delightful.

Taste is strong on banana, but with a rather empty middle and finish. Not very bright in my opinion --- feels a little watered down, but still very estery. The finish is clean but I think that the aftertaste could've been longer and richer. The carbonation and the body are dead on, and overall a very good hefeweizen.

Huge thanks to xpimptastikx for this one. As a lover of wheat beers, I've wanted to get around to this one for a long time. Poured from a 64oz. growler into a Harpoon Weizen glass.

A: Gentle pour yields a .5 finger foamy white head with little retention that dissipates into a thin film atop a cloudy, lemon yellow beer. Lacing is stringy and spotty with little stick. Average and the cloudiness is forgiven due to the style.

S: Nose is subtle but refreshing. Lemon zest, sweetness from the yeast, some banana, and creamy cane sugar. Not overly rich or impressive but very balanced.

T: Opens lemon zest, various sweet and very mildly tart spiciness. Some banana notes along with a smooth, creamy, yeasty malt backbone. Citrus towards the end with some more sweet spiciness. Finish is yeasty and slightly floral with a grainy and citrus tart aftertaste. Simple but incredibly quenching and refreshing.

M: Light bodied and moderately carbonated. Smooth and slightly watery, but very quenching and satisfying. Goes down with some bubbles. Finish is accented but with a clean, crisp, quick aftertaste. Perfect.

O: Live Oak Hefeweizen isn't overly impressive in terms of appearance or smell but its spot on taste and incredible mouthfeel make it the perfect session beer on a hot summer day. Incredibly drinkable, this might be the one time I thought a 64oz. growler wasn't enough.

414th review on BA
Growler to Weizen

HUGE!!! Thanks to Poonamibaxter for this.

App- Soft hazy yellow with a two finger head and not a lot of cling. Faded from dark to light in the glass.

Smell- Typical hefe smell without being overdone or too sweet, well balanced. Bananas, yeast and spice.

Taste- It's one of the most balanced hefe's I have had and I dont like hefs except for the Hefe-Weiss. This was bliss in a glass. Banana, spice and a little bit of grainy/wheat. Didn't over compensate any single flavor or ingredient.

Mouth- Medium bodied but almost a light bodied hefe. High carbed even after being in the growler for so long. Was soft and refreshing.

Drink- Not as spicy and as big as the Hefe-weiss but this was so tasty. Fresh, crisp, refreshing and tasty. I wanted to drink all 64oz of this but that would be bad Advocacy. The BA freinds need to share this.

Poured from a 64 ounce growler - thanks poonamibaxter!

A: Hazy light orange-copper, creamy white head, noticeable carbonation. Wow this held up extremely well in the growler!

S: Banana, hay, bubblegum, wheat, peach and some very faint orange notes. The nose isn't overwhelming but there is nothing you need to really search for.

T: Literally, this is damn near perfect. Banana notes explode throughout the palate with some white peach, strawberry and a twist of lemon. Banana and bubblegum are definitely the focus of the taste but it's done so well, it's pretty ridiculous. Some clove and spice in the finish to provide that final level of complexity.

M: Bubbly, a bit thick for the style (I love it) and extremely creamy mouth feel overall. Fantastic.

Honestly, one of the best domestically brewed Hefeweizens you will find in the country. It's a shame this is a Texas-only beer but it is worth every bit of effort to seek it out. Would LOVE another growler, this is going to go quickly...

1l Growler from gawnphishin...Thanks Reed!

A - Hazy yellow with a white fluffy head. No/minimal lacing. Evident carbonation.
S - Banana bread is number 1 here. Other slight fruity elements, perhaps some yeastiness. Very clean, pleasant scent.
T - Bananas, very slight hint of clove. Some graininess that I can only assume is from wheat. A bit weaker taste than smell, but it is very clean and very pleasant. Really pleasant yeasty element, with just a slight hint of citrusy hoppiness coming through.
MF - Pretty thin. A slightly creamy/oiliness but not much.
O - Very nice, pleasant beer. Great session beer (well, almost) - I easily drank a 32oz growler of this and wanted more. Super easy drinker, very pleasant beer, especially for someone who doesn't want to get wasted two nights before a race. I really appreciate the ABV of this one, I feel a lot less bad drinking it ;)
