Notes/Commercial Description:
Drake's Drakonic Imperial Stout - 8.75% ABV, 40 IBUS
A big, malty beast of a beer that exemplifies the way we roll here at Drake's. Two-row malt is blended with Chocolate malt, roasted barley, and dark Crystal malts to make up the grist. Only one hop addition, Columbus, is added for bittering, allowing the abundance of malt in this beer to shine through. Enjoy the dense brownish head, the silky maltiness, and flavors of licorice, coffee and chocolate, rounded out with a slightly dry finish. here's to those who don't fear the mighty!

Thanks to mitchfor3 for the trade. Pours with good head, good lacing. The body is black. Roasted, coffee smell, some vanilla as well.

Tastes like it has a ton of coffee in it, which is a good thing. Notes of bourbon and roasted malt. Mouthfeel is not as thick as other RISs, but it is nearly perfect, due to the lively carbonation. Drinkability is great.

Thanks to Boolshot for this great stout.

Appearance: Pouring this beer into my snifter I notice solid black liquid with no daylight whatsoever coming through. The brownish head stacked up to an astonishing three finger height with lots of laceing to go around.

Smell: The aromas are mind blowing! Dark semi-sweet chocolates with a mellow coffee seem to be the main players in this stout, but not without mentioning the slight woody notes and an alcohol that can't be beat. A subtle vanilla and soy can be detected as well. Not bad by any means!

Taste: The flavors are, of course, much like the nose. Bitter cocoa, a touch of vanilla, subtle coffee grounds, and just hint of woodiness. All of these flavors I mentioned, hit you for a split second in the front but then seems to die out fast, and becomes replaced with an almost stinging alcohol. Mmm..a very delicious brew indeed.

Mouthfeel: Slick and oily, thick body with a high amount of carbonation.

Drinkability: This is a fine offering. Too bad it is retired, hopefully I will be lucky enough to trade for another one some day. I would suggest you search this one out.

Found this and some other Drakes Barrel aged beers while going through the bottle cooler at the Freaking Frog in Las Vegas. Note-They were not on the list of available bottled beers. The beer had a nice roasted malt aroma with hints of chocolate a fruity aroma. Very smooth and well aged. Some roasted malt flavor but very drinkable. Alcohol was present but not overpowering. Pretty nice overall. Only drawback is that its body is a little on the thin side.

Pours a rich dark brown, almost black. Persistent strong head, but little lacing. Strong licorice flavor, subtle bitter chocolate and coffee undertones. Bitter aftertaste which quickly faded away after a few sips. Very heavy beer; it's been a while since I really felt like I was drinking food :-) I absolutely loved this beer. I'm pretty new to the style, but this is the first RIS I liked let alone loved.

On cask at the Rose and Crown in Palo Alto, CA - 2-17-2009.
First pint ($6) off a fresh tap :-) Given that it runs for $7/16.9 oz bottle at the local BevMo, I was absolutely thrilled to try it draft.

2008 vintage. 500 mL swing-top bottle.

Pours a black liquid with a vast dark mocha head. Retention is high, though it eventually settles down into around one half of a centimeter of respectable foam. Smells of plum, cookie dough, toasted coconut, and chocolate. All the good stuff I like in a good RIS.

Tastes of sweet malts with copious dark fruit: plum and prune especially. This intensifies on the midpalate and reminds me of leather, flora. Finish is intense, I want to say I get some heat, but in an aged bottle of a beer under nine percent that is not an accurate statement. This beer just smacks my tongue with an intense complexity of malts. Body is full, yet fuller would work better with the medium level of carbonation present. Overall this is a very good example of a Russian Imperial Stout, there should be a lot more buzz about this beer. A choice brew that is underrated.

Pours a very dark colour, not really penetrable by light, with gorgeous ochre head, nice, thick and dense with lovely retention. Looks just about perfect.

Smell is coffee and cocoa. Lots of rich, roasty sweetness, touch of bitterness to it but pleasant, dark and chocolatey. Well-rounded, enjoyable dark beer smell.

Taste is lovely and dark; all the right notes from the start with dark chocolate, cocoa, black pepper with some nice spicy stout notes that are full of flavour. Nutmeg and a touch of coriander come through, balanced by nice smooth unsweetened chocolate notes towards the back. All very nice, toned, smooth and enjoyable.

A bit too much texture, with a bit of sharpness from the booze, just a bit hot towards the back. Otherwise it just glides through the mouth.

Lovely, smooth and drinkable. A big beer that can be appreciated by all.

Jet black pour with a sizable mocha head of tight foam that lasts and laces nicely.

Aroma is deep, dark, and full of chocolate and roasty goodness. There are notes of dark, jammy fruit, anise, sweetened coffee, and plenty of orange and pinecone hops. As it warms, traces of leather, vanilla, and faint oak come out.

Flavor is equally impressive. massive, bittersweet dark chocolate, fresh coffee, subtle licorice, dark pit fruits, and creamy vanilla are countered by earthy wood notes and plenty of pine sap and crushed citrus peel hops. A lingering bitter finish of cocoa and pine taunts you into another sip. Very nice.

Body is right between medium and large. Mouthfeel is smooth as melted butter with a creamy texture and light carbonation. Very little alcohol kick, almost seems like this bottle was aged.

props to GClarkage for the wedding gift assortment, we really enjoyed them all!

Black and dark with a creamy hazelnut head. The aromas of chocolate, coffee and cream waft out of the glass. Lots of chocolate/caramel and thus very dessert-like on the nose.

Initially the foam is sweet and creamy but a dark beast of flavor is ready to be released as the sip rolls towards the back of my mouth. Full on roasted character with a sweet tinge, roasted marshmallows and hazelnut dip comes to mind.

The rich and coating flavors are nicely buffered by the freshness and lack of cloying character. Hops are subtle and do their magic as such. This is very easy to drink despite the knowledge that just a couple will put me out...

App: This is a great looking beer. The small head increases once I finish pouring, cascading down the sides. It's dark tan, like a light chocolate sufflee(sp). THe body is black as night, and the head never seems to leave it's top.

Smell: Drik fruity malts, like dried chocolate covered strawberries. HInt of biscuit and a little coffee too.

Taste: Follows the smell with the dark fruity malts, but more caramel and more of a hop presence. There's more butteriness too, that mixes well with the chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth, silky and a little lighter bodied than I'm used to in a ris, that makes the alcohol feel a little more present.

Drinkability: If I could get this in the area regularly, I would be buying it all the time.

Very nice and underrated Imperial Stout. Pours black with a nice thick tan head that sticks around as a cap and leaves some nice lacing. Has a good dose of hoppy bitterness in the aroma as well as a deep roastiness, some licorice, and some vinous notes at the end. Its a touch hot, but other than that very nice. Nice deep roasty notes and some nice deep bitter chocolate flavors as well as some late creaminess. Very nice flavors indeed, and although its a big beer, the heat is warming rather than harsh in the mouth. Nicely integrated while still intense. Smooth finish and relatively easy to drink, with a very nice lingering bitter chocolate finish.
