2015 4.35 Rating

I get a different flavor profile this year. I get more tropical fruit, but more of an orange juice taste, with a better malt sweetness.

2014 4.03 Rating
Aroma: Hoppy pine, resinous, stale

Appearance: Amber/reddish color, nice lacing

Flavor: Sweet caramel malt, Bitter metal, peppery after taste. Pine, not getting much citrus, do get a mix of peach/grapefruit. The peach flavor is from the citra used hop, wet and dry.
I get a slight wine aspect with the simcoe hop.

Amarillo hops are known as hop bombs, and it's fitting from this beer.

Aroma: Hoppy pine, resinous, stale

Apperance: Clear Golden amber slight tint of green in one finger head.

Flavor: Sweet caramel malt, Bitter metal, peppery after taste.

Mouthfeel: Thick sticky body, oily and sticky. Good carbonation across tongue. Bitter dry finish

Overall: Pretty smooth for how big this beer is. Good hop bitterness not a ton in the aroma. Really not that impressed with this beer. Kind of has a weird stale smell and for a dipa I would expect a big hoppy aroma and more bitterness. Maybe the higher abv is killing a lot of the flavor. I think the rye in it is throwing me off. This should be labeled as a rye dipa not a regular dipa. Bottled 2/06/2014 drank 2/20/2014 so it is fresh. $8.99 for 22oz

Let's do this.

A: Pours a beautiful transparent orange/copper. Finger and a half of slight off white bleached head. Carbonation is minimal, with fairly large bubbles rising to the surface.

S: Definitely hoppy, but not in the classic west coast style. This one is huge...stone fruit. Yeah, apricot, nectarine, peach. Some tropical and even a touch of citrus in this one. But definitely different. Malt presence contributes a subtle sweetness, akin to honeysuckle.

T: Big malt sweetness up front transitions seemlessly into a stone fruity sweetness. Splash of bitterness mid palate. Floral honeysuckle sweetness followed by notes of apple, apricot, peach. Green apple skin finish and a slight amount of alcohol heat.

M: Medium bodied. Big malts and alcohol, but the carbonation is present (and fine) enough to keep this one balanced at 9.3%.

O: Very unique take on the style. Would definitely pick this one up again.

I read about the rye addition after reviewing this. I had about half a glass left and tried to find the rye...it's very well hidden. There is a mild pepperiness in the nose and the mouth has a slight spiciness to it. However, I only discovered this while actively looking for rye notes.

Pour is transparent golden amber with a tight white head. Nose is bready malt, faint grain, lots of oily resinous hop aromas, pine and faint citrus. Taste is extremely oily, tons of hop resins, syrupy fully body, moderate bitterness and a steel like taste through the finish.
