The color was a dark amber with a reddish hue and a fair amount of white foam and some lace on the side of the glass. The smell was of piney hops and a hint of alcohol. The flavor was more of a IPA but with a little more kick. There just enough bitterness that makes this a enjoyable barleywine ale. There is a hint of citrus, hard candy, fruit and spices.

Poured from double-deuce into a snifter.
Pours a copperish color with a slight bit of tannish head which dared pretty fast.
Pretty fragrant and smells something like an DIPA more than a BW. I think the bottle says this is ratcheted up to 72 IBU, so pretty high for a barley wine.
Flavors linger after sips which us nice because I like the tastes of this. Doesn't taste like 9.6%.
Seriously, the more I drink it the more I am tricked that its a DIPA.
Regardless, this is my second bottle but it wasn't yet been on BA for me to rate after the first bottle.
I'll be buying this again and sending it out when someone wants good west coast hoppy brews, of which there are a plenty.

The Beers of California

#67

Bottled Date: 2012 Vintage

A: Deep, dark mahogany with a shade of cherry. The head of stone khaki foam rises in the snifter after a firm pour, slowly fading away leaving behind a flotsam of bubbles which seek shelter at the rim.

S: Pine hop freshness which fades to a breeze of booze along with caramel and raisin sweetness. There is also wood with a char undertone which comes through more as the beer settles.

T: Begins with a nice caramel, raisin, and brown sugar sweetness. The initial malt sweetness then settles to a wood, biscuit, and bread middle. There are hints of char and vanilla that come through intermittently. The booze and piney bitterness builds from this point finishing with a dry and spicy earthiness.

M: Smooth and syrupy, this big sipper packs a medium to gargantuan feel with an ample portion of carbonation.

O: This brew lacks complexity and layers but ultimately delivers a capable American Barleywine that stays true to the style.

Had on-tap at Capitol Beer and Taproom in Sacramento, CA

Appearance - Fairly clear and ruby amber in color, this barleywine was served up in a 12oz snifter with an off-white finger width head. Good retention, dissipating at a fair rate and leaving a film of microbubbles across the surface. Leaves a nice lace around the glass with good stick.

Smell - Strong citrus aroma. Orange with a touch of grapefruit. Touches of pineapple. Light to moderate chocolate notes linger in the background.

Taste - Follows the nose; huge citrus character upfront and throughout. Grapefruit with the bitterness of orange pith. Moderate chocolate malt notes, with lesser caramel sitting beneath. Slight astringency near the finish, but not outside what one might expect from a barleywine.

Mouthfeel - Full-bodied with a creamy, near syrupy feel. Moderate carbonation. Goes down smooth and easy.

Overall - A very solid barleywine from Drake's. Lots of citrus bitterness, basically venturing into "DIPA" territory. Would likely benefit from aging, but drinks nicely as is.

A - dark orange with a soft, white head that has little retention

S - huge citrus, some spicy hops, peppery, alcohol

T - spicy, peppery, bready, birthday cake-like sweetness, alcohol, some herbal hop notes in the finish

M - warm, full bodied, well carbonated

This is yet another Barleywine that blurs the line between DIPA and Barleywine. This has all of the classic DIPA notes people craze. It's hoppy, bordering on intensely so. It has a sweet maltiness to edge the hops. The alcohol is noticeable, but it doesn't take away from the drinkability. I could work through a whole bomber of this myself and be satisfied. It's worth a try for any fan of big, hoppy beers.

On draft at Smokeeaters in Cupertino.

In a 10oz Triple Karmeliet tulip glass.

A: Dark red/gold in color, little head, but leaves plenty of lace. A bit redder in color than a typical example of the style.

S: Alcohol dominates the nose. Slight tinge of hops, but no IPA style cirtus/pine. Very slight undercurrent of apricot or other light stone fruits. Not much there.

T: Dominated by the hops, but decently balanced. Malts are present, but not very much so. Mid pallet is very slightly metallic, but not offensively so.

M: Typcial medium body barleywine. Not oily or heavy, trending towards lighter due to alcohol in finish.

Overall: an inoffensive but underwhelming beer. Not all that impressed. Likely to not improve with a few years in a bottle, simply not sure what is left under the alochol and hops.

Picked this up at a great little beer store in Arlon, Belgium, Miorge Mihoublon. Clear mahogany-orange pour with a two finger off-white head with great retention and crazy lacing. The nose is very malt forward with hints of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, tobacco, tangerine, pineapple, and pine resin. The taste is bold and pungent with huge piney, citrus notes up front along with hints of caramel, toffee, orange peel, biscuit, pineapple, grapefruit, tobacco, and subtle dark fruit. The mouthfeel is slightly thick and smoothly creamy with medium body and carbonation and a great tangy, bitter, slightly dry finish. Overall, the balance leans slightly more towards the double IPA side which hurts the drinkability a bit for me, and would probably mellow out with some aging. With that said, it's still a very enjoyable Barley-wine!
