Notes/Commercial Description:
Rugged yet smooth, Kodiak Brown Ale balances caramel and roasted malts with enticing Northwest hops. Perle and Willamette hops accent without overpowering this American brown ale's intrepid maltiness. The result is uniquely delicious.

Purchased online from Bottletrek, poured into a Duvel tulip

Appearance is a dark rich brown with amber highlights, frothy tan head mostly sustains, thick lacing on the glass

Smell is roasty sweet malts with a dominating tone of nuttiness, some hints of cocoa/coffee, dark fruits, molasses, alcohol

Taste is good for the style, caramel and roast malts complimented by the nutty overtones, some sourness and light cocoa creep in towards the middle, finishes with the nuts and malts

Mouthfeel is light/medium-bodied, creamy smooth texture borders on watered down and thin, low carbonation

Drinkability is moderate, a fairly pedestrian example of the style, no major flaws but nothing tantalizing to warrant a repeat tasting, there are better Browns out there for the money

Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, biscuit, caramel, and nut aromas. Taste is much the same with toasted nut flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of toast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a nice combination of toast and nut qualities.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a very dark mahogany brown with ruby highlights and a half finger light tan head that dissipates to a thin patchy film and ring around the glass, leaving light slippery lacing. Light aroma of bready and caramel malt, nuts and a hint of cocoa. Flavor of mildly toasted biscuit malt, nuts, hints of cocoa and grassy hops. Medium bodied. A mild, unassuming brown ale that hits all the right flavor notes, but is perhaps a bit low key in flavor. Finish is lighter than expected. Good and sessionable, but not too memorable.

In a pint glass, the beer was dark brown with some red highlights. There was a thick tan head that lasted forever, leaving a good deal of lace.

Mild caramel aroma. Some nuts.

Caramel taste. Hazelnuts. Rather muted.

Decent mouthfeel.

A nice brown ale.

Bomber > Pint Glass

A - Amber brown two fingers of tan foamy head with medium lacing.
S - toasted grains, caramel malts, some roasted hazelnut, light earthy hop tones.
T - Sweeter on the malt, but you get a decent nutty quality, definitely some mild earthy hop notes that help balance it out.
M - Creamy, yet semi-dry.
O - A good drinkable brown ale.

22 ounces of Alaskan brown ale to drink. On to the beer:

A half-inch of creamy head sits on top this dark brown beer. The retention on top is good and some strings of lace work around the glass. The aroma is decent with the potential to be good, as it shows a pleasant nutty yeast and a kiss of toffee. Regarding flavor, the profile is more bittersweet (not literally). There is that brown ale nuttiness and sweetness which I like in my brown ales, but in Kodiak Brown, there's also a dose of offsetting graininess and even a note of cardboard. The potential is there, but is not realized.

Dark brown with some ruby tones also. Tan head is small and fades quickly leaving some minor lace.
Smell is mild caramel.
Taste is toasted malt sweetness with just enough hop bitterness to suit the style.
Mouthfeel is thin and carbonation is fairly low. which makes this an easy drinker.
Overall a tasty beer with no bad qualities. Relatively low abv. helps make more than one an easy choice. If you enjoy Brown Ales you should give this a whirl. Quite tasty.
