Arctic Devil Barley Wine, aptly named after the ferocious wolverine of the north, is an English-style (meaning malt-inclined) barley wine. Though the recipe and process for Arctic Devil have evolved over the years, it is brewed once a year then aged in oak barrels for several months before the entire batch is blended, bottled and released.

In its youth, Arctic Devil gnarls and snarls its way across the palate. Containing this beast of a beer for long periods in oak barrels--some having previously aged port, wine or whiskey--tames the unleashed malt and fierce hop flavors, melding and mellowing this powerful liquid into an incredible elixir worthy of a brewer's table.

Each annual batch of Arctic Devil Barley Wine represents the brewers' resolve to create an intriguing and sought-after barley wine by precisely brewing to well-designed specifications, carefully selecting the type and combination of barrels to use for aging, and meticulously checking the beer as it ages. Hugely tarnished copper (like an old penny) with raspberry cordial highlights. I'll take it as a good sign that Arctic Devil is incredibly murky to the point of opacity, a much different look than the gemstone-like lucency of most barleywines. The caramel colored cap looked good right after the pour and looks good as it slowly recedes. Too bad the ABV is a lace killer.

The nose is fantastic! I loved what reached me on the pour and I love it just as much up close. As the style dictates, there isn't a whole lot of hoppiness. That's okay because the aroma is incredible without it. Rich caramel, earthy leather and cherry pipe tobacco lead the way.

As I was pretty sure it would be, Arctic Devil is tremendous beer. My first mouthful told me that it's the best English barleywine that has ever entered my glass. Nothing else even comes close. I need more hoppiness than this for perfection to be a consideration, but this beautifully aged ale is very nearly there. I'm not sure if it's just over two years old or just over three.

What a delicious concoction. The brewery must have used a few tons of caramel malt and included 'who know what else' to get the beer to taste this rich and complex. My description of the nose applies on the palate as well, so I think I'll use it again. Stickysweet and bitter and earthy weave around one another like three strands of a supple barleywine rope. Start it out barely cool, like I did, and your tongue just might explode from sensory overload.

I've changed my mind. When a beer nails a style with this degree of precision, when I'd rather sit and savor it than finish the review, that beer deserves the ultimate compliment of a perfect flavor score. I wish I knew what the oak barrels that were used to age this masterpiece previously contained. Midnight Sun says that there are one of three possibilities for each batch: port, wine or whiskey.

Given the sweet, caramelized sugar that is oozing all over my taste buds, I'll go with bourbon whiskey. Then again, there's a fruity vinousness that suggests port. It really doesn't matter in the end. Whatever was used, I hope my next bottle is placed in the same sort of barrel.

I've had bigger mouthfeels, but I don't know that I've had a more silky smooth big mouthfeel than this one. Lucious doesn't quite capture it. How about superduperfreakinamazinglucious? Every other brewer of barleywines should drink this beer and take copious notes.

I must admit, I expected good to great things from Arctic Devil Barley Wine, but I didn't expect the magnum opus that is currently occupying my snifter. If you love great beer, do yourself a favor and do anything it takes to acquire a bomber of this outstanding elixir. This is my new gold standard for the English barleywine style. (2,775 characters)

sometimes everything comes to a head just right and you wind up with the chance to try a rare beer - and it's amazing. Yup, this is one of those. thanks to beerbeing for this via trade! This was a Nov 05 vintage.
A - A pfft of carbonation with the pop of the cap - good so far. Pours a thick dark burgandy color with less than a trace of off-white head whcih disappears rapidly. A trickle of bubbles come up indicating it's not flat.
S - Rich dark ripe fruit / raisins, caramel malt sweetness.
T - Similar to the smell but complexly layered and rich but not cloying.
M - full bodied, sweet but not cloying. Nicely balanced for such a rich beer.
D - A beer to savor as an experience. The complexity of the malts and the balance in this beer are impressive.

Get one if you can! Well worth the effort! (808 characters)

Had the 2006 version of this beer at the 2007 Hard Liver festival at Brower's.

This was the first time I had this beer on tap, having previously tried it out of the bottle. Usually I prefer draft versions of beer, but this one might be better out of the bottle. No matter, it was still an excellent beer.

I believe this beer received honorable mention from the judges at this festival.

This beer was much darker then the other beers, and had something of smokey quality that none of the other beers had. Muted nose, but on the palate one got flavors of cola, caramel, and smoke. The beer was fairly viscuous, and was quite sweet. It ended with a long, smooth finish, with a hint of bitterness at the end. A good beer, but not as fine as I remembered. (759 characters)

deep ruby tone, small head fades into an O-Ring, plenty of legs on this 10% beeotch, carbonation is active for a barleywine, a good looking brew, especially the hue

nose...
roasted sweetness ? if there is such a thing. This is a classic barleywine aroma, if you want to know what a BW should smell like, get your grubby little sausages on this one, big raisins, cranberries soaked in booze, very assertive and powerful nose here. it hints at so much under the raisin barrage... whiffs of cocoa and chocolate and grain. fantastic.

taste etc...
near perfect body for a barley, alcohol is strong, very boozy but yet smooth, this certainly gets your attention... this beer is so bad it should be in detention, carbonation carries it just enough and then BAM that super barleywine flavor explodes in your mouth, in the aftermath is some lingering bitterness and sweetness, this stuff sticks to your lips. this is almost as thick as some cough syrups... This is very sweet but not in an off putting way like say some tripels and other barleywines.

verdict?
hands down one of the best barleywines I have had.. getting through this bomber will wax me, but hell, I need to get to bed anyway... (1,384 characters)

Aggressive pour shows a small yellowy creamy head that dissipates quickly. Some decent chunkiness and floaties from bottle conditioning. Aroma is a big rich sugary caramel and apple brandy alcohol. Also some dry red wine fruitiness, rich port like aromas. Taste follows with a nice rich maltiness, some coconut alcohol flavor, some nice balancing hop bitterness and a good sized alcohol warmth in the finish. Taste also showed some raisin and caramel in the maltiness. Nice and thick to start, the alcohol seems to become more apparent in the mouthfeel as I get into it. A nice spiciness on the tongue and a sharp bite at the back of the throat. A very nice barleywine, I would definitely say this is much more of an american style than english as it is classified here, easy to drink for its strength, I'd love to have a few of these for the cellar. Thanks to beerbeing for a bottle as a gift. I am splitting this bottle with blitheringidiot. This is fantastic. It is classified as an English barley but it is close to an American in taste. Just a little head & is very malty and thick with a hint of sweetness. This is a great sipper. Wow this is good.

22oz bottle from weefisheads via trade. Thanks for the opportunity. Bottled Nov05.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/4" light brown head above the clear burgundy brew. Head holds on nicely, with heavy, slow-to-fall lace. Aroma is sweetness, dark fruit, and alcohol, all well proportioned. Taste is creamy maltiness upfront, dark fruit and touch of tanned leather in the middle, and massaging alcohol warmth to close. Mouthfeel is wow smooth, and drinkability is scary dangerous for the abv. Seek this one out. (525 characters)

Dark russet eggplant hue with a deflated thin cap to a collar.

Deep aroma of dark fruit cornicopia fig and plum followed with a brutal assault of dark grain waffle malt and burnt caramalized molasses.

First swigs: Molasses thick, I mean thick! black cherries, caramelized sugar, sticky pastry dough. Fruit figs and dates extreme with a balance of vanilla and almond. Complex hints of soy.

Feel is full bodied tongue coater, gentle restrained carbonation. Pancake mix dry. Sticky lips stick to the glass.

Last swigs: Unlike ANY barelywine. Almost rauch-like. Eating iceing fom the cake. Thanks AKSmokedPorter!

Bomber shared over lunch. Dark brown, bubbly initial head. Although the alcohol isn't very apparent, this is strong and calls for food, It's a sipper. Cinammon and spice and nutty barleywine. Full mouthfeel. Flavorful winter warmer crossover, very good. (253 characters)

Huge thanks to beernut7 for this one....not sure of the year, but I believe it is an '04.
Dark rust in color with less than 1/4 finger of off-white head...disappears rapidly and produces no lacing.
Huge raisins in the nose, caramel malt sweetness, mild alcohol.
The taste is insanely flavorful and rich...huge fig/raisin profile with a malty sweetness that is balanced with a bittering hop profile...finishes bittersweet with no lingering aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is thick as any I've tried in the style and the carbonation is sublime.
A definite sipper at 10%, but so fun to consume it is silly.
So glad to get to try this one, as I have never really seeked it out...I just may have to after this experience. (712 characters)

2005 edition 22 oz. bottle.

Pours a deep mahogany with reddish hues, A thin one finger tan cap that dissipated into thin lacings. Aroma is sweet caramel and molasses, estery figs, some citrus and floral hops, and a little alcohol. vinous aroma. Explosive rich flavor of figs and molasses, a little tropical fruit, toasted buttery cashews, whiskey, vinous quality, very nice subtle floral and tangerine hop bitterness, undertones of spice and pepper. Alcohol is noticeable with a deep warming effect. Mouthfeel is viscous with a full body, with med-high carbonation, and finishes dry. Exceptional and half-way done with bomber and already feeling good!!! Glad I have a couple more of these cellared. (701 characters)

22oz bottle that was bottled on November 05. Deep brownish amber with a good sized tan head. Light lacing and good head retention. Aroma is full of sweet ripe dark fruits with some caramel. Molasses and milder notes of baker’s chocolate lingering in the back. The flavor starts with more of the ripe fruit notes with sweet caramel. Caramel, toffee and molasses are noted as well. Some earthiness and a nice bitter touch to keep the sweetness in check. Very rich and full flavored. No real signs of alcohol just some warmth as it goes down. Pretty damn thick and smooth as well. Perfectly drinkable to me, big flavor with no harshness at all. Amazing stuff that I wish were available locally. (692 characters)

Holy god what a beer!

The definition of a traditional barleywine that plays the malt card to its fullest.

Tawny amber in appearence. A one fingered off-white head.

Smell is absolutely heavenly. I finally figured out what this smells like — those penny candy chews called squirrel nut zippers (no not the band which as actaully named after the candy)! If you've ever had one you know what I'm talking about. Molasses, toffee, brown sugar, torrified malt. Perfect.

Taste is more of the same. Honey, molasses, glorious malt. Alcohol is always present but so many other sugary flavors going on that you hardly notice the reputed 14%! Fruits abound: brandied cherries, pineapple, dates, figs, plums hell even appricots. Subtily hopped. Again all about the malt.

Mouthfeel is lush and viscous — like any great beer that has this much malt in it.

Drinkability is fantastic for the high alcohol content and the young age of the bottle: Nov. 2005. Make no mistake though, if you drink this one on your own you will be feeling no pain!

Additionally, I taste and smell a little Sam Adams triple bock oaky/maple syrup thing going on here but without the soy sauce element

Hands down my favorite malty barleywine. Get some. (1,236 characters)

Dark ruby. Wonderfully extracted caramel and chocolate malts in the nose, along with the barrel contribution which brings slight aromatics of cocunut, bourbon and wood. Fairly simple aroma but the flavor makes up for it. Chocolate covered raisin flavor with hints of caramel and oak and a touch of hops of the back of tonque. Full, coating flavor. The label indicates a bottling date of November, 2004, making my Arctic Devil 16 months old at the time I drank it. I noted a strong ETOH aroma intermixed with warm fruitiness. The diminished carbonation yielded virtually no head or lace. The body was dark russet brown and placid.

Taste is comparable to sherry wine with a warm alcoholic flush to the tongue and belly. The sweet aperitif contours with fruity complexity were a pleasure to indulge. The alcohol at first comes across as slightly intrusive, even after 16 months. But this effect tends to fade before long (or is that just me getting hammered?)

Overall, a fine sipping beer with strong character though not a heavy hitter. (695 characters)

Poured from bottle(room temp) a dark red/gold with about a 1" head of foam that shrinks to about a 1/4" layer that stays for the duration.

The smell is all malt, a very sweet caramel air permeates my nose.

The taste at first is very malty, hugely malty, caramelly malty with a fruitiness that adds to the sweetness but also takes some of the sweetness away. I can detect some hop character mid way through and in the finish but for this brew, that's all that's needed....it's all about the malt! Yummm..this is definitely a very authentic English style BW, like a vintage JW Lees Harvest which I love. I'm going to store the other bottle away for as long as my will is willing and see what happens. :^)

Note to self: self....I'm sure glad that my palate has evolved enough to enjoy BWSAs as sweet as an Arctic Devil and as hoppy as a Bigfoot and hold both in equally high esteem.

Bottom line: This is a Great *English* style Barley Wine style ale!

Pours cherry mahogany, lightly translucent, with a shy, eggshell head.
The discreet foam cap falls quick, leaving a whisp edging.
Chewy, rich, complex nose.
Juicy, figgy, raisiny malts with bourbon-steeped cherries.
Aromatics finish with stinging alcohol, citrus fruits, and vanilla.
Thickish body, mild syrup hints, and lingering.
Bitter on the pallet, followed by caramel coated figs, dates, and raisins laced with single malt.
Finishes long and warming, with additional bitterness and a mild brown sugar note.

Before I review I must say beware of this devil it f*ckin will bite you!Just newly bottled on November 5th this bad boy poured a deep amber with a thin off white head,incredible complexities in the aroma vanilla,oak and kentucky whiskey really hits and hits hard really waking up the senses and quite appetizing.Now I really liked the flavors of this beer but whoo they hit ya,very woody and whiskish (if thats a word) with vanilla and caramel standing out as well.The alcohol burn steals the show it actually burned my nose going down.This beer weighs in at 14% alc although the label says 10% that according to the head brewer at Midnight Sun and it feels like more than that.A very good very complex barley wine but these need to be laid down for awhile thats for sure. (772 characters)

2004 Nov release - 22 oz bottle from trade with Eagle River, Ak residents Tim and Julie

Standing around a campfire trying to thaw out the garden hose on a 20°F Sunday early afternoon - hardly Artic conditions but here in mid Missouri its time to break out the Barleywine. Brew club members Emit, Randy and I are brewing 10 gallons of a mild ale that will show off their 05 seasons fresh Cascade and centenial hops. As we start the mash with a full cooler of crushed 2-row and crystal and pour in 8 gallons of hot strike water I learn that Emit and Randy flew to Alaska for a 5 day fishing trip and that their accomadations included Alaskan Amber Ale on tap!

The Midnight Sun Artic Devil Barley Wine added to the telling on many fishing stories as we built up a small campfire next to the brewkettle.

By the third pour it was evident that the clear dark chestnut body was without sediment. More tan head than I expected for barleywine - quickly falling (expected for a 10% abv ale). With the naked surface catching mid day sun ruby highlights outline the three pint glasses.

Aroma of dark fruits - plumbs and raisins combine with cherry and sweet caramel with the alcohol rising to a near cognac level never dominating or becomming too prominate. Too good to hide. The tales of artic fishing continue. Silver salmon, chum salmon and pink salmon congregate in slack-water areas off the main river channel and providing fast action on the
fly . . . .

Flavors that would complement the five star meals served by the two chefs attending Emit and Randy at their long days ends back at their lodge. Complex caramel malts oak flavors swimming in alcolic hopped liquid. Randy, a hophead noted that it was still hoppy thinking that it was this years release - and could use a few more month in the cellar. I did not tell him it was already had a year of aging. I found the hop/malt balance very nice with the bitterness and alcohol countering the sweetness. (1,967 characters)

Thanks to timmcd64 for getting this one to me!

Pours a hazy, dark brown color with just a hint of copper. The rich, creamy, but poorly sustaining head is a brown-tinged white, and leaves a very thin lace. The aroma is a robust and sugary blend of dark fruits, roasty characteristics, and alcohol. The flavor has a lot of the same features, but is richer and far more complex; there a notes of rum, raisins, prunes, dates, various roasted flavors, and a sharp alcohol bite. The pleasantly long finish is sweet and roasty. The mouthfeel is fairly thick and very creamy with a subtle carbonation tang.

This is one rich beer, almost overpoweringly so, and is dominated by dark fruit flavors. The finish is impressive too. My only complaint is that the sweetness is a bit too much; this brew would be a little more drinkable if the sweetness were a milder. Still, highly recommended. (884 characters)

Appearance – This one poured a nice, glowing brown in color with an off-white head that frothed up good for a high-octane ABV.

Smell – Man, this is a big ‘un. The huge, roasty malts are thick and boozy. They are drenched in fruity and refined sugars. This nose is almost overpowering. If you like big Barley Wine bouquets, you have to buy this just for the smell.

Taste – The malts from the nose are thick and roasted at the taste as well. The alcohol is sharp but very confident in the flavor profile. The giant table sugars almost make this one feel like an English-style Barley Wine.

Mouthfeel – This one is in between medium and full in the body with a nice, almost stinging alcoholic mouthfeel.

Drinkability – This is not for everyone, but if you like your ABWs big, bold, and boozy (like I do) than this definitely is for you.

Comments – Ms. Skyhand busted out this Barley for her first annual Bring on Da Booze festival, and personally it was the highlight of the evening for me. (1,008 characters)

Dark ruddy, muddy, dirty, cola coloured brown with a fizzy, fizzly head that dies out quickly. Aromas are all raisins, dark fruits, plums, residual sugars, and not really a hint of booze. Impressive. Taste follows suit with plenty of malty dark fruit flavors, and candied spicy flavors. Rum raisin cake, maybe? This is really like an old ale, not so much of a barleywine, but hey, who's keepin' score? Mouthfeel is medium bodied and drinkability is pretty good as well. A nice one from AK. (489 characters)

The Arctic Devil is a devil to be sure! This little nip will sneak up on you quick!

It pours a clear, dark-chestnut body with a reddish-cast and glowing crimson and orange highlights. What head comes up initially is a yellow tan; but it doesn't hold for long and leaves only a few spots of lace here and there (which can sometimes happen with stronger beers).

The nose is malty, caramelish, toffee-ish, and lightly hoppy with a leafy side.

The body is full, and it moves across the tongue with a light zest from its exceptionally fine, moderate carbonation (and perhaps some alcohol sting as well!) before warming to become more dextrinous.

Toffee and molasses dominate the flavor, backed by dark sweet fruit (prune, raisin, red grape, some fig), a rub of leafy hops, and a spritz of spicy alcohol. It's rich and malty, but not overly sweet due to it's solid bitterness and alcohol. It finishes with some residual maltiness entwined in drying alcohol that fades to reveal some even longer lingering dull-bitterness.

A better head retention, a touch more complexity, and a little less alcohol would bring this up into world class status! Very nice! (1,217 characters)

Pours deep dark caramel color with some red and maroon undercurrents. Small light tan head fades immediately.
Aroma of chocolate and caramel with some bready undertones.
Flavor of sweet caramel, hint of chocolate, grains and bitter somewhat citric and resined hop flavored profile. Really well balanced.
Mouthfeel is very chewy, candy backbone. Thick and resiny almost like a paste or glue (not in a bad way.) ots of sweetness upfront and then a growing gradual bitterness reaching a spicy crescendo.
Drinkability is really high. Great example of style, incredibly well-balanced. (583 characters)

Appearence: Pours a wonderful dark copper with perfect clarity. The head is creamy beige and leaves wonderful lacing. The ruby tints in the beer are beautiful.

Smell: The smell is a stunning mix of caramel, prunes, raisens, fruits and so much more. The malts are abolutely perfect, balanced, and the alcohol rounds them off eincredibly well.

Taste and Mouthfeel: This is exactly how I want a barleywine to taste. It's incredibly complexed, with caramel, wood, and super sweet notes mixed with a slight hop presence. The alcohol at the end rounds it off perfectly. The belly warming effect is superb. The complexity is huge but is so well balanced and tasteful. The mouthfeel is thick, chewy, and creamy.

Drinkability and Overall: Ok. I absolutely love this beer. One of the more perfect beers in the world. I know it's hard to find, but if you ever come across this beer you have to try it. Honestly a killer beer that is damn near impossible to beat. I bow before this beer. (1,039 characters)
