Free Loader Double Red IPA. The first installment of the latest series of Midnight Sun gems, the 2010 "pop ten" series.
Pours a nice shade or red with slight haze at first. the head forms well, but has only moderate retention and leaves fairly minimal lacing.
Nose is a blast of west coast hops, but it can be determined that there will be a significant malt backbone here as well.
Taste follows, big west coast hop flavors, very resiny. Some malt sweetness is there, but quite obviously in the background. That being said, this is still a full bodied beer and definitely does not lack in substance. Finish is quite dry, and leaves long lasting hop resin on the tongue well after each sip. Definitely a San Diego style brew.
Mouthfeel is in the ballpark, pretty close to right where it should be for the style, if anything a tiny bit soupy. Carbonation is ideal.
Drinkability is solid, could easily put away a few of these without realizing it until I stand up.
Overall, a very nice DIPA, and brewed with a very unique process that only few have attempted. If you are in the brewery, i suggest asking about it, as its a pretty interesting... some would say Palate Wrecking...technique. Definitely recommended, and midnight sun continues to prove that when you get ahold of any of their IPAs FRESH, you will not be dissappointed. Great beer as always.
