Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #45 (Oct 2010):

As the styles blur together, should we even worry about putting them in one? Pale amber with a mild haze, thick curtain of lace is draped on the glass. Bready aroma is heavily slathered with citric rind and pulp from the hops. Wheat malt scrapes the palate, while the sharpness of the hop bitterness stings; seriously hoppy with an unyield- ing character. Exotic fruitiness from the alcohol and perhaps even hops weigh in against the bready maltiness. "Why not!!"--that is what this beer screams at our taste buds. Its not like we expected any real balance at 100 IBUs, right? Only for serious hop junkies.

Hazy dull gold with a small white collar leaving very light scattered lace. Murky.

Smell is hoppy, bright, dank and resinous.

Taste is more so hoppy, a sharpness. Very nice. I think the wheat is more clouding the appearance than anything. No graininess.

Mouthfeel is medium light, oily.

Drinkability is good, a solid, big bright IPA. Not sure that the wheat did anything discernible behind all those hops, but it sure was good.

Poured a hazy brass hue with a two finger frothy white head. There was very good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a smooth cereal malt and peppery hop spice.

The taste consisted of a full wheat spice with an obtuse sweetness and peppery hop at the finish.

The mouthfeel was toward the lighter side of the style with a dry finish.

Overall a tasty wheat driven experience.

Been having This beer on tap for the last month and a half, it really is amazing how fast these double IPAs flavors start to degrade, its still good now, but on The 4th of July when the new batch came out it was truly something special.

A-Hazy orange-amber color w/ a generous head and very consistent lacing (when fresh)

S- Tangerine pith, tropical fruits, nice passion fruit hints, a bit of phenol, mild scent for an IPA due to the wheat in the beer. When it was a few weeks old the oils from the hops were clearly visible in the nose

T- For a beer that is rated at 100 IBUs this thing is mellow on the noticeable bitterness. A good beginner DIPA if someone is unsure about super hoppy beers. Again has great sweet citrus flavors with lingering hop bitterness that gives way to a mellow wheat flavor to keep the hops at bay.

M- Probably the best part of the beer, the wheat and the hop resin all combine for a eminently enjoyable feeling in the mouth, moderate carbonation that lasts throughout the whole beer.

O- A very good and unique DIPA that really needs to be drank in the first 1 1/2 months after brewing to get the full effect. The batch this year really was fantastic and if you can git your hands on some 2013 Hop Dog in the next few weeks, DO IT, you wont regret the decision.

From notes, 9/4/10. Chocolate and grapefruit pith. This is an interesting beer - you don’t come across super hoppy imperial stouts all that often - but it’s not really an enjoyable beer. The underlying stout seems really nice, but it’s almost completely overshadowed by the citric bitterness of the hops. This is more a problem for the taste; the aroma actually blends nicely and is quite nice. Mouthfeel is a bit astringent. The beer is black with a small tan head.
