On-tap at the Midnight Sun Loft. Served in a stange-like glass. Sampled on a few separate occasions. Described as a Berliner Weiss, aged in chardonnay oak barrels with brettanomyces.

A - Served with a thin white foam that settles to a thicker collar and a few wisps on top. Lightly hazed pale golden body that is a bit darker than your typical Berliner (although this is about 50% stronger). Some visible bubbles.

S - The brett has won out over the lacto to some degree, but there is a good amount of both via green funk and lemony sourness. The barrels impart a light white wine acidity.

T - More yeast and bread character than the nose implied - still maintains some of the original weiss flavor. Otherwise tart apples, lemons, and lactic acidity.

M - Medium-light body, fairly high carbonation that might be verging on harsh, and a super-dry finish. Sourness and acidity gets a bit stomach-churning after 6oz or so.

O - Awesome session potential, particularly if your stomach isn't already perturbed by other sour beers. I didn't try it with the fruit syrups, but they offered raspberry, strawberry, and kiwi (no woodruff unfortunately). I'd be curious to see if it gets even more acidic over time, but unfortunately it was tap-only.

On-tap.

Pours a hazy lemon-yellow color with a half-finger white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of light malts with good amounts of funk and moderately tart lemon rinds. Also present are light amounts of wheat twang.

Tastes very similar to how it smells. Crisp light malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by tart lemon rind, a bit more tart than the nose intimates. Midway through the sip a good deal of funk dries out the flavor profile, carrying through to a crisp ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It’s got a nice thickness with active carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall I was a fan of this beer – not quite in the top tier of berliners that I’ve had but not very far off either.

Pours a hazy pale yellow with a small and very fizzy white head which doesn't stick around too long. Swirling the glass regenerates the head quickly.

The nose is tart with lemons and some fermented green grapes but with a solid earthy funk character. The wheat is there with some sweetness in the background, not too prominent though.

The taste also starts with an initial puckering lemony tartness but the wheat backbone comes through a little before the funk and barrel take over. That leaves the finish very dry and oaky but with some emerging brett funk.

The mouthfeel is light and effervescent though it's a bit fuller bodied than other Berliners. Still dry and crisp though not as crazy drinkable as some lighter versions.

This is a solid "amped up" Berliner weiss with lots of dry oak character. Very drinkable though the funk would probably keep me from killing too many of them.
