Not a huge beer, despite the 9.8 ABV...this is definitely one of the milder barley wines I've ever had...

A- opaque orange with thin lacing
s- fruity- very sweet smelling with the alcohol coming through in the end
t- good...but a bit different than I expected for the style- def. fruit and malt character- lighter flavor than the smell suggested and nicely balanced- I could definitely have more than one or two before the flavor overpowered (compared to something like Lags Old Gnarly which is a personal fave that I limit myself to one of)
m- a little on the thin side, but good carbonation level. good overall.
d- very smooth, drinkable beer that I think might be a good introduction to barley wines for someone who hasn't had or doesnt like the bigger ones.

This was labeled on the chalk board as the "Barley Wine '09," although I'm not sure if that means it was actually brewed in 2009 or just released in 09.
It's a clear orange/yellow, with a few slow rising bubbles. Small thin white head.
Nose is simple pear and sugar.
Taste is astringently sweet with some gentle wild hop notes. Alcohol comes through on the end.
Mouthfeel is a bit thin for a barleywine, but not bad. Decent drinkability even considering the sweetness and the 9.8% ABV.

2007 vintage

Pours a clear amber/orange color with a lot of bubbles for a barleywine. small patchy head that leaves no lace. Smell is light but mostly of a good balance of malt and hops. Some spice comes out in the taste. Suprisingly this seems more malt driven, but is a good balance overall, but very light. light sugars reside on the lips. Good taste but enough of it. Thin mouthfeel overall but really quite good. What this lacks in taste it makes up for in drinkability. Very smooth, abv is nowhere. could easily drink two or three of these. Overall a good offering, but certainly not one of the stronger tasting barleywines Ive had. If you like to pound barleywines (which would be very wierd) then this is a good one, but I would much rather have some AK or AD.

Moose’s Tooth almost always has Barley Wine on tap. This past spring, my last visit, they had two available – vintage 2003 and 2004. This was the first time I had seen a vintage distinction for their Barley Wine. I don’t know whether the recipe has ever been changed, so I can’t comment on whether the difference between the two vintages was due to aging or not. I would guess there might have been a change, because the older beer seemed hoppier. In any case, the two were sufficiently similar in general style that I’ll just call this a generic review for their Barley Wine.

Appearance: Clear, medium amber with minimal head, but moderate retention and lacing.

Aroma: Malt, hops, and whiff of alcohol.

Taste: This Barley Wine is a bit light compared to some of the bigger American versions out there, but is very tasty. Lots of fruity, caramel malt, pine and citrus hops, and a nice, balanced alcohol burn. Generally comparable in taste to say, Hog Heaven, as opposed to, perhaps, Bigfoot or Old Ruffian.

Mouthfeel: This beer has adequate body, but I would like a bit more texture. Most definitely not the thick, syrupy style.

Drinkability: I have no problem drinking this to excess. I would think that if some American Barley Wines are just a bit too big for you, this might be a good choice.
