Smell is lacking, but rich in coca, nutty, roast taste flavors are evident. I can clearly smell and taste the smoky grains.

Color: dark with red glaze transparency only at the bottom.

I would recommend, I believe they attempted to make this beer a hopped up version of the tradition porter. not bad

Went out to first tap for Clinton Fearon and his Boogie Band last night. I was very excited to try this year's smoked porter. This beer won Bronze (I think) at GABF last year. I was not let down at all. This beer is spot on. Unlike the Alaskan Smoked Porter (which is an amazing monster in its own right. It just needs a couple of years to lose the "moments after the fire department leaves a terribly scorched building" taste), this beer is very drinkable from the get-go.

I had three pints of this over the evening after sampling a couple of big stouts with friends at my house. So, my palate was prepared for big roasty smoky flavor. It was not let down. It has a deep black hue with a tight, dark brown, moussy head. The beer was served about 20 degrees too cold, so the aroma did not develop for a while. But, eventually, rich caramel, and smoked and roasty malts came forth. The flavor is similar to the aroma but more pronounced with the right amount of sweetness to balance the roasted flavors and the smoke. The smoke is just right in my mind. Definitely noticeable but not over the top. The mouthfeel, though, was the best part. It fills your mouth with mousse like consistency with very round edges. As it warms the mouthfeel improves. The CO2 seemed to blend in better when it was at proper drinking temperature. It's silky going down leaving pleasant remnants behind.

Get some while you can!!

Pours a deep black with ruby highlights and an unusually white head that retains ok, and leaves decent lacing.

Nose is full of (alder?) smoke and roasted malts. Heavy on the roasted malts (which i like).

Taste follows with a healthy helping of smoke flavor (seems a bit stonger than past vintages). The big roasted barley presence is definitely there, alot of dark lovi malts in this bad boy, or so it seems. Even a very slight chocolate like presence peeks out. Finish is nice and crisp, smoke and roasted malt linger on in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is pretty much right where it should be. Good carbonation, ideal viscosity for the style.

Drinkability is quite solid for the style, could probably work my way through this whole growler. And maybe i will.

Overall an excellent example of the style in almost every way. Certainly one of the moose's tooth's best offerings. I wish they bottled so i could slap some serious age on a few of these. If they have it on, definitely grab some, as this one is easily in moose's tooth's top 5 and a nice oasis in what is usually a desert of stereotypical neo-hippie cater to the masses offerings. But they could make bud and only bud as far as im concerned as long as they keep making the world's greatest pizza.
