Pours golden, the color of a nice cider, sligh thead slight lacing. Smell also has a bit of dry cider aroma to it, barnyard, sour apple, lactic, goatscheese, and a whiff of light airy perfume in the backround. Taste begins mellow the sourness creeps in and assaults your tongue. Lot's going on with sour fruit funky barnyard flavors and a dry ciderish and bretty finish that just left me wanting another sip. SO Drinkable! The palate was not what I was expecting, very mild carbonation, so smooth and velvety. Medium bodied almost. I have had this before and the carbonation was MUCH more lively and the feel lighter. Not sure what was up but I loved it as it came closer to the Flat Lambics tht you get in Belgium, and which I LOVE! Overall just a fantastic Beer, maybe my favorite of the style but it's tough as I never have them side by side.

Pours from a 375 ml bottle with a cloudy apple juice color with a modest fluffy white head that drops quickly and leaves little lacing

Aromas begin quite funky; a ton of Brett character with a tinge of lactic sourness and oak. Horse blanket, light cheese, wet hay, light vinegar, sour grapes. Quite complex indeed.

The tastes begin moderately sour and leaves you wondering which direction it is going to take. Then some pithy grapefruit flavors kick in; in a few seconds, there is no doubt where you are headed as the sour flavors burst forth in your mouth; very intense and assaults your taste buds. As funky as the nose is, that's how sour it is on the tongue. There is a lot of lactic tartness and it's very acidic. There's a bit of lemon flavor and a lot of Brett. On the finish is a fair bit of oak.

The mouthfeel is surprisingly not all that bubbly. Medium bodied and modestly carbonated. Finish is quite dry and sour.

Overall, this is probably the first Gueuze I actually enjoyed, and no surprise, it's from the top producer of the style in the industry. It was quite an acidic beer. As a result, it's tough to drink a lot of. However, it does taste very good, so it's also something you want to drink lots of. A strange dichotomy indeed. Definitely worth seeking out for fans of the style. For me, I'm glad I had it but I don't need to have it again.

Bottle shared by drabmuh. It's almost breakfast time. Cantillon is likely my favorite brewery, and for some unknown reason, I have still yet to try this beer. What a fun beer to bust out just before dawn!

March 2010 vintage

Hazy and light orange hued, with a lasting white head. The aroma is classic Cantillon funk. Ahh...

Wow, this is some damn fine beer. It tastes and feels cleaner than the standard gueuze. Simply quaffable, pleasant, enjoyable, and wonderful. Barnyard funk, fresh spring water. While I have been remiss not get acquainted with this beer sooner, I will certainly make this a staple of my cellar ASAP. Highly recommended.

Bottled 7 June 2011

A: Straw colored, small white head that doesn't last very long. Nice bubble streams

S: Funky and earthy. Not much complexity. Really working to pull much out of this. Maybe a touch of diaper :-(.

T: Really dry and earthy. Not very tart at all. Very minerally in the finish. About a third into the glass, I'm starting to get past the mineral assault and pick up a touch of fruit, apricot perhaps, but quite mild.

M: Despite the bubbles, not very carbonated. Maybe needs more time past the bottling date to fully condition? Palate scraping astringency.

O: This is proving to be one of my least favorite gueuzes. Seems pretty one-dimensional. The lack of carbonation particularly makes me wonder if I should have given this more time in the cellar to condition.

A. Light Pale yellow, low head, mild carbonation.

S. Nice citrusy sour, lactic, slight spice coming through, barnyard funk for sure

T. Dry and sour, very complex, sour apple, lemon....
tangy vagina??? yes this is what we all threw out there and pretty much agreed on.

M. Sharp, bubbly, Dry

O. very Good abd complex, but a little dry and slightly funky

Bought this one directly from the brewery in Brussels. Bottled on August 31st, 2011. Consumed on december 27th, 2011.

Nice golden orange color with a nice foamy head and sticks to the glass. Nice. Small bubbles... perfect carbonation and perfect look if you ask me. Wow, directly out of the bottle, it smells so good. Complex, funky... i like it. Sour in the nose too. It actually smells like in the brewery... reminds me of my visit. Nice. I get some cheese in the nose and some fruits as it warms up a bit. Taste is sour... gotta love sourness to drink this. I do. Its not sourness like you get in vinegar. Its perfect sourness. Fruity notes are presents too. Apple, mainly. This is so easy to drink and so good. You have to love sourness 'tho... but if you get into gueuze... i guess you want to taste it or you absolutely like this. This is the best gueuze I had so far.

Picked up a bottle at the Cantillon Brewery in Brussels. The bottle say to drink it "preferably within 20 years after the bottling date," which is amazing. Bottled 9 June 2011.

A- Pours a bright golden apricot color. Lively white head fizzles up quickly but soon bubbles down to almost nothing.

S- Lots of fruit, lemon, apple, pear, a little bit of hay or wet grass and a powerful sour yeast aroma.

T- Big citrus/lemon/sour apple tartness, underneath that there's some fruity sweetness, a bit of oak/vanilla from the barrels, and some vinegar and yeasty barnyard funk.

M- Light bodied, very dry with lively carbonation.

O- An excellent beer, simple and elegant, this really sets the standard for what a gueuze should be.

This will be quite an interesting experience. Going from strong Belgian ales, this Lambic is a stark difference. Known for being the "champagne of Belgian beer", this most likely will not disappoint given Belgium's beer history. Now, on to the review...

Appearance - A stunning orange. Very bright and vivid. Pours out nice and the head is quite strong, however, it disappears rather quickly. After it sits, almost no head is visible. Nice and bubbly, though. A very active beer.

Smell - Quite a strong bouquet. Vinegar, lemon citrus, vanilla, flowers, sourdough and wine immediately come to mind.

Taste - Before you even have time to taste it the sour attacks your tongue. Quite shocking at first. Like biting into a ripe lemon. After the sourness settles, this beer really comes to life. Quite dry and bitter. Once the lemon and citrus notes tame down you can definitely taste the wheat. Vinegar, green apple, white sugar (even though there is no sugar added). Naturally sweet and tart. Very nice!

Mouthfeel - Nicely carbonated. Very refreshing, crisp and sharp on the mouth. Seems to stimulate the back, roof of the mouth more than other areas. Never really experienced that before.

Overall - Not normally a beer I typically resort to, but quite distinct and complex in its own right. Very light and refreshing. The sour characteristics do not seem overpowering (which is surprising considering how sour it really is). A beer worth trying if you wish to mix things up.
