Vintage 750ml bottle from 2006 on 12/7/09. Thanks to FooFaa for sharing.

A - Clear golden body with no carbonation and sparse bubbly white head that quickly disappeared.

S - The extremely pungent nose reeks of toejam/feet and earwax with a heavy band-aid character and vinous notes. Reminds me of grape skins soaked in alcohol after being crushed by someone with bromidrosis (although us regular folks know this exquisite little inconvenience by the name of Stinkfoot).

T - Kicks off with a very tart sour grape character with an equally apparent band-aid quality, which segues into a distinct barnyard/farm animal character with horseblanket, funky dung, some oaky astringency and woody notes. While bitterness is virtually non-existent, the lack thereof is replaced by extreme sourness.

M - Very modestly carbonated with a light syrupy texture and very tart and sour on the palate. However, Lou Pepe is not prickly on the tongue at all.

D - Extremely pungent and tart with enough barnyard notes to make even the cows perk up and take notice. This is definitely over the top but still retains some semblance of drinkability in the process.

Green Cantillon bottle with a cork and cap. 2001 vintage. $35 at Toronado in the Haight, shared with Brewbacca. Expensive, but worth a try.

Alas this one has not aged well, either that or it’s the most mellow geuze I have tasted. Personally, I have grown to appreciate battery acid and vinegar in my geuze. This one is just mellow lemons. Still, there are some things to point out.

The aromas are wonderful. Tart and highly acidic lemons that scorch your nostrils and rancid white grape skins. Balanced, mellow, and nearly perfect.

Appearance is a hazed lemon/apricot with stunning effervescence that maintains a long lasting, albeit thin head.

Flavor is mild lemon tartness. Very mellow and not terribly complex.

Mouthfeel is not particularly sour. Not sour enough for me at any rate. Quite crisp and very dry but mellow.

Drinkability is like a fine sparkling wine without the headache.

Not my favorite geuze. It’s not big enough, ballsy enough, nor sour enough. Still, I feel lucky to have tried it.

Vintage 2003. Bottled in 2005.

A: Golden orange with quite a big off-white head with good retention. Good lacings as well.

S: Nicely edgy but very well composed funky character. Notes of clean bretty aromas, horse blanket, aged cheese and mud. Grass and mild tart fruit notes. Lemon juice and perhaps a faint hint of mint.

T: A quick acidic punch at first followed by a massive funky brett character. Pleasant citric notes, grass and apple rind. Lots of barnyard and horse blanket and hints of aged cheese. After a while in the glass, the funkiness dominates almost completely. Gently husky wheat character. The finish is nicely dry with a considerable grassy bitterness, a hint of stomach acid, funk and minerals.

M: Medium body with very tingly carbonation. Refreshing and very easy to drink.

D: Very good. A complex and very funky gueuze. Not very acidic considering the brewery behind it. It's actually almost too easy to drink - it seems like it looses character after a while, as if the acidity mellows out.

2004 vintage, tasted 5/29/11

A: Pours hazy burnt orange with small frothy head that fades, leaving a bubbly slick around my glass, slight lacing.

S: Smooth, but subtle barnyard funk, leading to tart peaches, transitioning into an earthy oakiness to finish.

T: Initial taste is more tart and acidic than the nose would suggest- lemon citrus, expanding into classic lambic flavors on the mid-palate, cheese, ending with bitter grapefruit, slight vinegar in the back. Dry finish that lingers.

M: Light, oily and smooth in the mouth, but light carbonation detracts a bit from the experience for me

Light amber in color with a bit of haziness. A minuscule layer of off white foam covers the majority of the top of the beer. Aroma of pineapple and green apples is very compelling. The body is moderately carbonated,crisp,and dry. The front of the palate is sharp with a champagne like taste that quickly tuns to pineapple and green apple with a quick dry finish. Very refreshing.

A bright, light orange and a tall white head. Highly carbonated. Lots of lace left on the glass.

A spicy, musty, funky aroma, consisting of bright fruit, lemon and apple, tangy Brett yeast, hay and grass, and lots of barnyard funk. Pretty awesome. Seems comforting, inviting, and welcoming.

The flavor is similar to the aroma, but perhaps a bit more bright with fruit--lemon, apple, and pear. The tart funk and sourness is huge here as well, though balances exceptionally well with the sweet, fruity flavors. Tremendous!

Light, bubbly, airy mouthfeel--an absolute pleasure.

A definitive version of the style. A classic. Just about perfect.

750ml bottle, 2007 vintage, been sitting on my wine rack for a while now, so 'better' get to it. Same label imagery as the other Lou Pepes.

This beer pours a cloudy, medium golden yellow hue, with a half finger of soapy, bubbly, and mostly just fizzy off-white head, which leaves a thin drooping ring of lace around the glass as it hastily recedes.

It smells primarily of laid-back, funky, and ethereally cheesy yeast, semi-sweet pale and wheat malt, acrid lemon, a further blended stone fruit tartness, vinegary white wine soaked woody oak, damp dirt, and some tame earthy, weedy hops. The taste is side palate challenging tart underripe lemon and cherry juice, soft grainy wheat malt, some additionally astringent musty barrel woodiness, more mild funky yeast, and a pleasant dried hay character.

The carbonation is fairly soft and innocuous, after it duly fizzes out at the outset, the body medium-light in weight, with that sour fruit juice nature obfuscating any and all aspirations of real smoothness. It finishes off-dry, ever so slightly, as the stolid wheat malt, while subservient to the acetic overtones to the bitter (hah!) end, keeps up its end of the deal.

I do like the sour, but not just for the mere sake of it. That said, this has it in spades, but with the caveat of a nicely supportive dose of malt, fruit and yeast, which are deftly balanced when taken as a whole. Generally dry and somewhat acerbic - sure - but genuinely tasty all on its own, or I imagine, with some appropriate food - pommes frites, anyone?

Glad to see more Cantillon on shelves around anchorage. Purchased at La Bodega. 2006 vintage.

Pours a clear yellow with a slight peachy tint to it and a nice white head that quickly reduces to a ring around the glass and leaves little lacing.

Nose is full of lactic action and some sharp lemony notes. A bit of horse blanket and some very slight spice as well.

Taste is quite nice. A smooth drinking gueuze with moderate to high sourness. Lemon zest and some light green apples appear. Very lactic and the oak is noticeable. A good blend. Very dry finish and the oak lingers on quite a bit on the aftertaste, along with those green apples. There is a tiny touch of a spice like character in here, but its very slight, and can probably be atributed to the barrels.

Mouthfeel is good, but the carbonation is a bit lower than it should be for the style. Love the dryness.

Drinkability is quite solid. A very easy drinking gueuze with a refreshing tartness rather than abrasive lactic face-banging sour. As fun as those are sometimes, a nice moderate to high tartness is nice when ive got a 750 to myself and am out of Zantac.

Overall this is yet another winner from Cantillon and Lou Pepe. A refreshing and tasty queuze that totally defines the style. I am excited to see how my other bottles do in a decade or so. A fine beer.

I can take a geuze, some are sweeter, some more mellow. I was expecting the mellow with complexity, based on what I heard, based on the rating. What I got, and important this was a 2000 Vintage, was an absolutely sour geuze, with some edge taken off. Its lemony with some ginger. From fruit peaks out, but its sour and while I finished 2/3 of a litre, I could not tolerate the entire bomber. Perhaps I did not get off to a great start with mold on top of the cap, and into the initial aroma.

Thanks to Steve for this one. Sampled the 2001 and 2000 vintages side-by-side. Review is for the 2001 vintage though there will be comments about the 2000 throughout. 4oz. pours from capped and corked 750ml bottles into matching wine glasses. Reviewed at a tasting 2/19/11. From notes.

A: Pour generates a small ring of white head that dissipates quickly. Beer is a slightly cloudy yellowish-white peach. Lacing is minimal and with little stick. The 2000 vintage is surprisingly much more carbonated. More head, more lace and darker beer color overall also. Still, pretty much what I'd expect from a Gueuze.

S: Nose is sharp cheese, overwhelming horse-blanket and Brett funk, wet wood, and notes of tart lemon pulp and ripe sour peaches. Very aromatic and impressive overall. 2000 vintage is much more earthy and grassy with a much more woody presence and significantly less sharpness and funk.

T: Opening is accented by a sharp, lemon and sour apple tartness. Notes of stale and damp air, wood, and blankets of Brett funk. Mild sour peaches at the middle and end with a building sourness right at the end. Finish is moderately dry and puckering with no aftertaste. Very well done. 2000 vintage is much less sour and with more of a bitter, grassy, yeasty presence.

M: Light to medium bodied and near still. Oily and silky in the mouth. Saliva-generating. Puckering and moderately dry. Very slight graininess going down. Crisp, clean, and dry finish. No aftertaste. Very appropriate and the combination of dryness and a slightly prickly finish is what makes this one.

D: What is surprising about this beer is the stark contrast between the 2000 and 2001 vintages. 2001 was, in my opinion, far and away, a superior beer with more funk, more tartness, and simply more character. Still, regardless of the vintage, seek this one out and sit on it. A gem of a beer.

Pale and very clear - gueuze tumbler. Definitely a bigger layer of flavor and more sour finish than the standard gueuze. Barnyard funk, hay, citrus zest, a touch acidic, white grape skin, brett. Liked this very much - it was rainin Lou Pepe's in Brussels!

Label reads 2006, corks says bottled in 2008. Aside from dates, the bottle is in French and Dutch as it was brought back from the Netherlands. I've been having a fair number of amazing oude gueuzes lately, and this hits all the marks, but goes just a little deeper. Yes, there's the sharp lemon-lime juice sour/acidic tang that pulls at the back of your jaw. There's the toasted oak, but also with a hint of ash and pepper. And then I also taste a not inappropriately cheesey funk like you'd get from a nice, fatty blue cheese. What else? Mmmmm, there's a light fresh garden herb and celery note, dry white grape, and wheat cracker. God damn this beer is amazing.

UPDATE 6/14/10: Had a bottle from 2005. The tartness was a little more smooth, but it was no less divine to drink.

vintage 2007 (bottled in 2009)

cork sucked coming out, broke into two pieces.

pours a bright slightly hazy golden yellow. very little to no head.

very sharp acidic lemon with dry oak. some old basement.

very sour. dank, dark, and acidic. loads of lemon sour apple. slight funkiness and dry oak. malt emerges a bit in the back ground towards the finish.

moderate carbonation, somewhat more on the mild side. very dry with a lingering lip puckering tartness.

good, but not as complex as i was expecting. not sure if maybe its this vintage or what. was looking for a bit more depth but regardless, would buy again. i kind of think the classic gueuze might be a bit better overall.

2005 bottle from Cantillon in Brussels.

A - Great appearance, bright golden with a creamy white head and excellent lacing.

S - Nice funky tart aroma with green apple, lemon, and barnyard.

T - Flavor is full and complex with malty sweetness to balance the tartness, lemony funk, sour apple, and wood. Just a straight-up awesome gueuze.

M - High carbonation, medium body, and a great effervescent mouthfeel. A sharp and tart acidic bite, just like you'd want and expect from this style.

D - Better than the regular Cantillon gueuze. Can't pinpoint why exactly, maybe it's a little better balanced and smoother.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. 2010 sticker.

Appearance - Hazy orange body. Nice white head. Thick collar and some nice surface wisps.

Smell - Lots of citrus. Lemony. Very spritzy. Some dry grass and a bit of a metallic aroma.

Taste - Much more dynamic. The citrus is lemony and orangey. Pale malt is stronger. Very woody. Dried grass. Woody finish.

Mouthfeel - High carbonation. Moderate sourness. Medium light body.

Overall - My white whale. An excellent Gueuze. I think I'd take a 3F over it, but it's remarkable.

A. Hazy, and light honey with a touch of orange. Head is 1/2" and has nice retention.

S. Very lemony and citrusy with a touch of horseblanket, cloves, and a little bit of peppercorn.

T. Zingy and sour- very funky. A little bit of wet basement, a little touch of orange and some horseblanket/farmhouse.

M. Light and thin in the mouth. Great for style.

D. To be so drastically sour its a very light, refreshing and drinkable beer.

A massive thanks goes out to cmrillo for bringing this one out during his own 40 Beers* @ 40 Birthday Bash! 2008 Vintage! Served from bottle into a Cantillon taster flute. Poured a golden yellow with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, lemon rine, lemon zest, funk, sour, and tart. The flavor was of sweet malt, lemon rine, funk, citrus, sour, and tart. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a great brew. The Lou Pepe treatment really added a nice touch to this brew. There was a nice citrus/lemon aspect going on in this one in both the aroma and flavor. This made it really easy to drink and balanced out the sour and tart characters going on. Definitely worth trying if you have not done so.

2000 vintage

Appearance: Not as peachy as most of Mr.Van Roy's Beers, this one is a little more like opalescent apple juice, the real stuff you can buy at the farmer's market. A ring of ephemerous lace on top.

Smell: That unmistakable Cantillon aroma, it smells just like at the brewery...Dank attic with cobwebs, a horse blanket, a wet cat, and this acidic twang that would normally repel the average Beer drinker but that somehow strikes a note with me.

Taste: Sour and crisp, huge astringency, probably moreso than other offerings from this brewery. However the gains in asperity and aftertaste are at the expense of complexity of flavor. Still an excellent Gueuze that I'd be curious to try again in a few years.

2004 batch, bottled 2006. Served at 55º.

Poured into a Cantillon tasting glass, and a Boon Geuze tumbler simultaneously. In the tumbler there was a creamy cap of white foam, with a nice lively surface. I ended up decanting from the larger glass into the smaller one, producing two fingers of foam. Brilliant amber tone with very high clarity. Visible carbonation trails rise through the liquid.

Let this one breathe a little after pulling the cork. As it comes to room temperature, it has notes of musty oak, wildflower compost, wet hay, lemon zest, and spicy tamarind. Mild citric sourness in the taste, immediately seems much mellower than the Classic Gueuze. Long, dry tannic oak finish. Notes of hay, lemon, orange peel, and cheese. Velvety carbonation that gives it effervescence and incredible lightness.

This was a birthday present, so i'll be savoring the 750 all to myself ;D

A huge thank you to wordemupg for this 2007 bottle, a looong time big want. Enjoying this one by the fire on christmas eve.

Appearance. Pours a lovely rich honey-gold with a touch of orange. Topped with a thin white head that fades fast.

Smell. Apples peaches and pears ...very fruity. Some cider vinegar and some nice sweet(ish) woody funk.

Taste. Huge lemony sourness, nice funk that's less woody than the smell but what I would describe as truly barnyard with sweet hay and all. A little dank oak wood makes an appearance in the finish.

Mouthfeel. Medium-light body, medium-low fine and lightly prickly carbonation.

Overall. Very happy with this choice as the official start to Christmas. A fine Gueuze. Thanks again and a very merry Christmas, Chris!

Bottle: Poured a dark golden orange color lambic with a quite large bubbly head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of sour notes with some distinctive oak and not much acidity which kind of surprised me. Taste was very refreshing with some sour notes and some oak; I was expecting more acidity and some barnyard notes but those were almost completely absent. Well done but considering the price difference I would stick with the regular gueuze.

Pours out a cloudy effervescent with lots of small white bubbles. One finger of suds and small lacing.
Cherry and lemon zest with just a hint of a caramel sweetness underlying the extreme sourness.
Taste is lemony orange with just a tad of sweetness. Mmmmm good.
Almost an asprin-like feel to the mouth after the sourness goes away. Very dry but with lemon peel with a touch of caramel sweetness.
Great session brew if I could get this all the time. Great!

A wonderful 2005 vintage bottle. I had waited a long time to finally be able to try this one, so when given the chance to trade for it I jumped at the chance. Served chilled from the cellar, this corked, capped, and wrapped 750ml bottle was decanted into an oversized wine glass. Consumed on 11/16/2008.

The pour was wonderful. The best I could have expected for sure. Rich, and bright, vibrant golden yellow in color. A large, perhaps three inch high head of white foam then came up over the top and settled down wonderfully into a one inch layer of foam that came up across the entire top of the glass. Gorgeous side glass lacing and a wonderful presence of carbonation.

The aroma was a bit lighter then I was expecting, but still tremendously good. Rich nose of tart apple vinegar, sour grapes and a touch of wet hay. Enormously complex, as it warms it comes across with a light wheat or herbal like quality and just the tiniest amount of spice prickling the nose. The flavor was more of the same. Rich notes of sour and biting vinegar flavor coming across on it right away. A little bit one sided, and not as huge as I would have wanted given the stature to which this one is held to, but still extremely solid and worth it. Light grapes and even a touch of wheat coming through mid palate, especially as it starts to warm. Mellow grassy flavors are mingling very well within the flavor now. Smooth, easy transgression with the carbonation being nearly perfect here, and a light feel that was just spot on. As for drinkability, this one is top notch; I could not have found an easier beer in the style to put down.

Overall while not my favorite sour I have ever had, it is up there. This is about as solid as they come, and priced right along with the upper echelon of beers. I would have no issue trying this again, and to be honest would be curious to see how it holds up in the even earlier vintages.

2005 vintage received from Dyan, thanks man. This one concludes the Lou Pepe trinity for me.

Appearance: Wow, these old Cantillon bottles sure do have some interesting stuff growing beneath the foil... Not entirely sure what this black gunk is all over the bottleneck, but I'll just ignore it. Into my tumbler, the beer is a hazy wheat color that would probably be clearer had I given the bottle a couple of weeks to settle, but I can't be bothered. Vigorous pouring left me with about an inch of pure white foam, which retains surprisingly well for gueuze. Purdy.

Smell: Nice footy funk, damp wood, dirty socks, moldy basement, headcheese and a hint of dead raccoon.

Taste & mouthfeel: Lemony and tart, but surprisingly soft on the acidity. Flavors of green apple skin, cider vinegar, dry white wine and even a touch of tannic red wine (presumably from the barrel). Complex and well balanced, a definite sipper but very easy to drink. Gentle carbonation, enough to give it a bubbly mouthfeel but not much more. Delicious stuff, one of the best around.
