07 bottle into tulip.

Dark murky gold in color. Nice white bubbles with some spotty lace.
Smells HUGELY oaky with a deep musky funk.
The taste is nice-- oaky and funky with a good sour bite to it. Some light citrus notes hide in here, but the big oaky funk is lo is the best.
Feel is a bit medium and syrupy. Feels like it could use more carbonation.
Overall-- I'll take the classic gueuze over this one. This is not bad, but is the least best of the Lou Pepe series.

Fun to try, nonetheless.

vintage 2007 (bottled in 2009)

cork sucked coming out, broke into two pieces.

pours a bright slightly hazy golden yellow. very little to no head.

very sharp acidic lemon with dry oak. some old basement.

very sour. dank, dark, and acidic. loads of lemon sour apple. slight funkiness and dry oak. malt emerges a bit in the back ground towards the finish.

moderate carbonation, somewhat more on the mild side. very dry with a lingering lip puckering tartness.

good, but not as complex as i was expecting. not sure if maybe its this vintage or what. was looking for a bit more depth but regardless, would buy again. i kind of think the classic gueuze might be a bit better overall.

2004 vintage. Poured into a Cantillon goblet.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy golden straw color with 1" of white head. Carbonation is moderately lively. Retention and lacing are quite nice. 4

Smell: Smells of green apples and pears initially, with tons of barnyard funk and sour lactic notes following. Very nice.

Taste: Starts off with unripe green apples, followed by hay, grassiness, barnyard funk and lactic sourness. Sourness is certainly present but less present than I was hoping for. The finish is dry and puckering, but not overly so.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Body is light with moderate carbonation; very light and refreshing. Overall a very good gueuze. Would have liked to see it a touch more sour, as it was more balanced between the unripe fruits vs. funk and lactic sourness.

Bottle with a 2004 sticker date, enjoyed on a rather indulgent afternoon at Monk's. Served in Cantillon stemware at cellar temperature. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a hazy shade of apricot, with streaks of yellow throughout. A half-finger white head forms and leaves some lacing around the glass. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the crazy steak of yeast on the side of the bottle.

Super tart citric acidity in the aroma. All of that classic Cantillon funk comes through in abundance, and this epitomizes "horse blanket." For all of the tartness, this is actually a fairly sweet-smelling gueuze, with a candy-like note that cuts through the sour. Still though, that grassy funk is in full force.

Cheesy funk, grass and musk all vie for attention in the palate. There's a touch of hop bitterness in the finish, a taste I've never noticed in any prior Cantiloons. Apples add a touch of fruity balance. And yet, I can't help but be disappointed at the lack of mouthpuckering sourness. I've had plenty of Cantillon fruit lambics that were far more acidic and sour than this 7-year-old gueuze. This seems somewhat muted, a little lifeless and dull.

The mouthfeel, too, lacks a certain Cantillon panache. Medium-to-low carbonation contributes to a rather wan, thin and boring flatness. Not terrible, but just not up to par.

Though I hate to say it, I almost wished for more heartburning acidity from this bottle. The tart, enamel-melting funk I hoped for never quite came through, and though this is still a fine gueuze, I expected more.

2006 Vintage

Pours a light golden tangerine with a white foam head – maybe half a finger – that fades into a white ring.

Smells tart and funky. Acedic (lemon/citrus) sourness and a healthy dose of barnyard funkyness. Nice.

Taste is very nice – very sour (again citrus, mostly lemon), but not sharp. A soft feel to it, but still attacks the tongue and glands with sourness. Smoother than a lot of the gueuzes I've had. There's also a bit of funk and oak in the flavor, but less than the nose would indicate.

Feel is a bit flatter than I'd like. Sticky and medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Overall - a tasty treat, but sadly, not as good as it's easier to find brothers, Framboise and Kriek.

2006 vintage. Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a tulip. Thanks to readbaron for bringing this over for Dunt's birthday tasting.

Appearance: The pour is a pale golden straw color, hazy, with a traditionally soft gueuze head. After a few minutes no head is left.

Smell: Light malts, lots of sour tangerine, lemon zest, and grapefruit. Soft faded barnyard funk in the background.

Taste: Light malts, lemon zest, grapefruit, some barnyard funk and a lot of oak contribute to a very tart flavor.

Mouthfeel: The body is on the lighter side of medium, with gentle carbonation. Tart and acidic. Leaves some sour residue behind my lips.

Overall: The age on this beer has clearly added to the robustness of the flavor. Unfortunately, the flavor is a little lighter than I would want from a gueuze.

Poured from a bottle into a flute. I had this at the bottle funk even at Teresa's Next Door.

Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy golden color with an orange tint. There is a little pink that shows up in the light. Hardly any carbonation at all.

Smell: Herbal funk with sour lemon and a mild sweetness.

Taste: Unbelievably smooth. Very sour but I wouldn't call it harsh. Lemon with bitter aged hops. One of the best gueuzes I have had the pleasure to taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a mild amount of carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This was so smooth my wife enjoyed it, and she hates sour beer. Just awesome.

2006 (sticker) Vintage poured into a Geuze style glass.

A - Pours a hazy gold/orange colour with a nice White head that stays around and laces the glass.

S - Nice parmesan like aroma with green grape acidity and peat like aromas

T - Top class flavous that are vineous witha little spritzy sweetness to even it out. Also nice peat like flavours that are complimented with sour peach and melon.

M - Lowish carbonantion and low to medium body that is just about perfection.

O - Best Geuze that I have had to date. The balance between the flavours is just magic and I could drink it all day long.

2007 750ml capped and corked bottle poured into tulip 11/9/11

A golden yellow with a slight haze, a short lived thin soapy film left just a few patches of lace

S straw with some funky lemon and vinegar and a earthy woody aspect that I can't place

T super tart fruit like a peach without sugar on top of what I smell, quite acidic and pretty funky

M slick and a little flat but it could turn your mouth inside out from the sour

O I like a beer that leaves me thinking and this one dose just that, I love the sour funk on this one

Interesting stuff and I understand why this beers so sought after, at 25$ a bottle that says something. I'm having a good time learning about funky stuff can't wait until I can afford some more to see how it ages

This is a really good gueuze. When I heard that Lou Pepe was the premium cantillon I had in my mind that this was going to be a sour bomb. But I was wrong. It is very light, drinkable, and balanced.

Color is standard gueuze cantillon, see through golden straw

Smell isn't very overpowering, but I get some straw, standard geueze smells, some tart

Taste is smooth, tart lemons, but not overly so, one of the more milder gueuzes I've had. Kind of a thick wet mouthfeel that sticks around the mouth for a while. A bit of a tart pucker on the end. Carbonation is probably a bit less than their standard gueuze.

This is a great beer , again the balance is just perfect. Often times I like the tarter gueuzes, but with a meal or taking down a 75 solo, this geueze is perfect.

750ml bottle – thanks to Troy for sharing. Pours a hazy gold with little head. Aromas of funky, horse blanket and straw. Loads of lemon zest and mellowed vinegar. Flavor is a nice balance of citrus and funk, with leather and earthy notes. Not a super sour beer, but rather a nice gueuze overall and a perfect summer brew. Flavors last long on the finish and end refreshingly nice. Well done.

This beer pours a bit darker than most gueuzes I have had. it is a reddish color no doubt from the wine barrels it was aged in. the smell is acetic funky and definite red wine notes. the flavor is sour again nice flavors from the red wine barrels, and a decent amount of funk. the mouthfeel is light puckering and well carbonated. A truly Excellent example of a Gueuze

2004 vintage, tasted 5/29/11

A: Pours hazy burnt orange with small frothy head that fades, leaving a bubbly slick around my glass, slight lacing.

S: Smooth, but subtle barnyard funk, leading to tart peaches, transitioning into an earthy oakiness to finish.

T: Initial taste is more tart and acidic than the nose would suggest- lemon citrus, expanding into classic lambic flavors on the mid-palate, cheese, ending with bitter grapefruit, slight vinegar in the back. Dry finish that lingers.

M: Light, oily and smooth in the mouth, but light carbonation detracts a bit from the experience for me

Thanks to Joe for breaking this out at a recent tasting, into a glass.

Grandfather Gueuze looks the part with a deep gold color with some bronze and orange highlights towards the sides. A nice cap of bright white foam that leaves some small streaks on the glass that glide down not fully sticking. Whoa, the musk on this one is undeniably old Gueuze. Big scents of oak from the longer time in the barrels, wood, lemon zest, hay, barnyard funk and sour bugs. It's really bold and that's what counts. Taste is off the charts, a deep sour that is large yet not tounge reducing. Swishing this around the mouth really does wonders. Tastes of old wet wood/oak with a blast of earthy tastes from the barn including hay. Citrus is on the lemon side with trace orange. Malted barley makes a appearence at times but don't look for it to save you from the sour attack that grandpappy is. Feel is light bodied like most gueuze, highly carbonated, fizzy and a bit scorching on the tounge after a few sips. Puckering is a understatement, a bit acetic on the end. This one is a shocker and I only wish I could find some bottles to lay down, but that ain't happening anytime soon.

S. Musty, funky, with a cheesy quality.

T. Tart with lemon and wheat, but some nice sweetness as well and some woodiness.

M. Medium body - much thicker than a lot of the other sours we've been drinking.

D. Great. Soft and subtle with nice tartness and good body.

Pours a very murky hazy yellowish. Almost no head. Pours fairly thick. Smells funky and floral. Tastes fruity (peachy) and floral. Sme nice tart sour funk. Thick on the tongue. Overall very interesting. The thick lightly carbonated mouthfeel is very nice

Poured July 2011, sticker date 2007.

Appearance is very light for a gueuze and with a massive head, never seen this much carbonation on a gueuze before. Orangeish wheat in color.

Smells of wheat, orange, lemon, funk, acid.

This tastes very unusual for a gueuze, but still very good. Lots of orange and lemon sourness, and a background flavor reminiscent of a witbier. Definitely a wheaty flavor. We all agreed this was an unusual flavor profile for a gueuze, but we all liked it quite a bit anyway.

Mouthfeel is a little off on this one, there's too much carbonation. It's odd for a gueuze to fizz in your mouth and I think it probably distracts from the flavor. The head looks awesome in the glass but isn't helping in the mouth.

Overall, a very nice beer if atypical of the style.

750ml bottle, 2005 sticker, into a Gueuze glass at Delirium Café.

A: Clear amber body with a 3/4" head of frothy white foam. Ok retention, no lace. Nice, but not great.

S: Very delicate aroma of citrus, dry hay, oak, vanilla, grape skin, and garden flowers. Quite complex and enjoyable, although not quite as funky as I was expecting.

T: Starts out tart, with lemon + grapefruit zest leading to apples and flowers; some malt give substance toward the end, and it finishes with some earthy, grassy funk. Very long, dry finish. Superb.

M: Medium to full body, moderate, super-fine carbonation. Perfect.

O: This one really grew on me as I worked my way through the glass; at first I was a little disappointed in its lack of intensity (especially for a Cantillon), but the more time I spent with it the more I was impressed by its profound complexity and delicacy. Well worth the 18 euro price tag.

2005 Vintage. Poured very cloudy, much more so than the classic gueuze. Not overly carbonated, not much head. Very strong aroma of grapefruit acidity. Taste is much of the same, so much sweet grapefruit acidity. Very very sour, but still drinkable. Excellent beer.

750mL corked & capped bottle poured into a stemmed glass. 2006 sticker vintage, bottled Dec. 19, 2008. Got this awhile ago in a trade, but cannot remember who it was from; thank you whoever you were!

(A)- Pours a clear golden orange color. Produced a small cap of off-white frothy foam. Some lace.

(S)- A nice dry earthy funk. A nice prickly acidity with some mild clay-like cheese. Some nice bits of lemon and white grape. Mildly lactic. I like how complex this gets as it warms.

(T)- Very similar to the smell. I like the dry earthy funk and lactic cheese-like characters this puts out. Not super sour, but a nice fruity acidity.

(M)- A nice mellow carbonation level. I like the balance of this. A good acidity with a lovely earthy funk.

(D)- I like this gueuze. It has a happy marriage of dry earthy funk and a mellow fruity acidity. The beauty of this one really is in its balance, complex profile, and restrained potency. This is a great drinking gueuze that would be great to have around to have with meals and perhaps a snack of artisan cheeses.

I dared to be different tonight.

Poured into a beer chalice, a cloudy, straw coloured beer with a single finger of head.

I don't even have to stick my nose into the glass to realize that this is a sour beer. Sour peach, citrus, brett and a slight medicinal smell.

Wow, this is knock your socks off sour!!! The sourness of this beer fully encompasses the taste. The taste reminds me of a Jolly Rancher candy, the exact flavour is hard to pin down but I would have to say peach, lemon and maybe pineapple. There is a medicianl funk to the taste.

This beer to me has a thin mouthfeel.

Lambics are a very interesting style of beer. Not something I drink on a regular basis but something I enjoy when I want something radically different.

Thanks to Joe (bucketboy) for bringing this to round out our Lou Pepe Diagonal, completing the series with a bottle of the 2001 vintage. The 13th beer of our tasting overall.

Crystal clear, more so than any geuze that we cracked at this tasting, and it has just a thin dusting of head that quickly dissipates, leaving a a still gueze below.

The aroma is light, briney (much less than 3F or De Cam, but considerably more than the Monks Cafe Cuvee Geuze), full of lemon zest infused lactic sourness with a very subdued earthy and tannic dryness and funk, rounded out by just a hint of grapefruit. This is mostly sour, with just a bit of brett in there to balance. The flavor swings even more to the sour side. Much more lactic than the aroma, and the lacto really steals the show. The tropical citrus of the nose is overwhelmed by the lactic lemony character. The briney saltiness also builds, as it and the lacto anchor this flavor. Earthy funky dryness rounds it out.

Dry, light, and easy to drink despite the strong acidic sourness, this tasting has proven to be quite a case study in the peculiarities and spontaneity of natural fermentation. This is far different from the other great lambics of the tasting, and it still manages to hold its own. The more still mouthfeel and resulting body really does help this beer out. Another great offering from Cantillon.

750ml bottle, 2007 vintage, been sitting on my wine rack for a while now, so 'better' get to it. Same label imagery as the other Lou Pepes.

This beer pours a cloudy, medium golden yellow hue, with a half finger of soapy, bubbly, and mostly just fizzy off-white head, which leaves a thin drooping ring of lace around the glass as it hastily recedes.

It smells primarily of laid-back, funky, and ethereally cheesy yeast, semi-sweet pale and wheat malt, acrid lemon, a further blended stone fruit tartness, vinegary white wine soaked woody oak, damp dirt, and some tame earthy, weedy hops. The taste is side palate challenging tart underripe lemon and cherry juice, soft grainy wheat malt, some additionally astringent musty barrel woodiness, more mild funky yeast, and a pleasant dried hay character.

The carbonation is fairly soft and innocuous, after it duly fizzes out at the outset, the body medium-light in weight, with that sour fruit juice nature obfuscating any and all aspirations of real smoothness. It finishes off-dry, ever so slightly, as the stolid wheat malt, while subservient to the acetic overtones to the bitter (hah!) end, keeps up its end of the deal.

I do like the sour, but not just for the mere sake of it. That said, this has it in spades, but with the caveat of a nicely supportive dose of malt, fruit and yeast, which are deftly balanced when taken as a whole. Generally dry and somewhat acerbic - sure - but genuinely tasty all on its own, or I imagine, with some appropriate food - pommes frites, anyone?

Vintage 2007, sampled in 2011. The corked and capped 750ml bottle was decanted into two pint glasses.

A slightly hazy gold with a thin white head which soon diminished to a thin ring.

The funky barnyard smell is there. Some subdued cherry fruit notes. Tastes include mild fruit, apple cider. Lemon dominates at first. Very smooth in the middle. Some tannins. A long tart finish with a sour twist at the end.

A light body with low carbonation. Very well melded creating a "sum is greater than the parts"effect. Less sour but more subdued and mellow than I expected. An awesome gueuse. Opens up as it warms. I could drink this all night. A great last beer of the night. Nothing can top this.

Thanks to Steve for this one. Sampled the 2001 and 2000 vintages side-by-side. Review is for the 2001 vintage though there will be comments about the 2000 throughout. 4oz. pours from capped and corked 750ml bottles into matching wine glasses. Reviewed at a tasting 2/19/11. From notes.

A: Pour generates a small ring of white head that dissipates quickly. Beer is a slightly cloudy yellowish-white peach. Lacing is minimal and with little stick. The 2000 vintage is surprisingly much more carbonated. More head, more lace and darker beer color overall also. Still, pretty much what I'd expect from a Gueuze.

S: Nose is sharp cheese, overwhelming horse-blanket and Brett funk, wet wood, and notes of tart lemon pulp and ripe sour peaches. Very aromatic and impressive overall. 2000 vintage is much more earthy and grassy with a much more woody presence and significantly less sharpness and funk.

T: Opening is accented by a sharp, lemon and sour apple tartness. Notes of stale and damp air, wood, and blankets of Brett funk. Mild sour peaches at the middle and end with a building sourness right at the end. Finish is moderately dry and puckering with no aftertaste. Very well done. 2000 vintage is much less sour and with more of a bitter, grassy, yeasty presence.

M: Light to medium bodied and near still. Oily and silky in the mouth. Saliva-generating. Puckering and moderately dry. Very slight graininess going down. Crisp, clean, and dry finish. No aftertaste. Very appropriate and the combination of dryness and a slightly prickly finish is what makes this one.

D: What is surprising about this beer is the stark contrast between the 2000 and 2001 vintages. 2001 was, in my opinion, far and away, a superior beer with more funk, more tartness, and simply more character. Still, regardless of the vintage, seek this one out and sit on it. A gem of a beer.
