75cl bottle, sticker 2009, poured into a Cantillon sherry glass today, 10/4/2013. Bottle split into 4 pours. Drank this next to a 2013 Classic Geuze.

Pours a hazy golden colour, with an effervescent white head that disappears fairly quickly, especially compared to Classic. Retention is not high, but I suppose that's because there is no 1 year old lambic to provide the sugars that the bruxellensis need.

Smells full of lemon, zest, with lots of Cantillon earthiness and funk. Even a bit on the sweet side. I would say this smells more intense than the Classic Geuze, but with less lemon. I can't pin it down, but it has that component that the Classic Geuze and 3F Oude Geuze don't have that 3F Golden Blend does.

Flavour is quite vinous, like a nice clean chardonnay with a lot of earth and funk, Cantillon-style. It is fairly acidic on the side of vinegar, not quite heartburn-inducing but definitely sour. There is some sweetness as well. Some oak barrel rounds out the flavour.

Medium bodied, thicker bodied compared to the Classic Geuze. OK carbonation, not as crisp and refreshing as Classic Geuze but it does the job.

Very interesting take on the geuze style. I don't think this is supposed to be a classical geuze style, but rather more of a blend of 2-year old lambics. It shows here- more complex but less effervescent and refreshing than Classic Geuze. Worth trying at least once, but I would suggest that your resources are better off going towards the Lou Pepe Kriek or Framboise.

750mL 2005 black foil thanks to Manuele at Ma Che Siete. From the basket, it pours a hazy, glowing, light orange with a fizzy white head dwindling down quickly from the acid. Aroma is massive white grapefruit, blood orange, sweet orange sorbet, peach, subtle funk. Very fresh and rich blood orange dominant. As it warms you are rewarded with mace and wet cinnamon stick. Taste is dried grapefruit, pomelo, lemon tart, lactic fattiness. Bitter white grapefruit and pomelo come in to balance the sourness, but there is just nowhere near the balance and freshness I get from 2005 Iris or Russian River Beatification. Palate is uber mouth watering, so lactic sour that it is near lacerative (I had to drink most of the bottle myself unfortunately). But in small quantities the palate is fresh, fruity, and soft. Really so beautiful. Bound to age extremely well.

A - 100% clear light gold, lively off white head.

S - sour, lemons, Cantillon-style.

T - surprisingly restrained and delicate, vinous, sour of course, and an odd hint of apricot (!).

M - lively, zesty, lightweight.

O - a real find in terms of drinkability. Reading the website after confrims the idea of subtle in this style and it works a treat.

2009 Vingate. 750 ml bottled 27th December 2011. Served in a stemmed Cantillon lambic glass

Appearance: Pours a bright golden color with a thin film coating that dissipates quickly to a thin white color. Body is lightly hazy with light visible carbonation streaming throughout the glass.

Smell: Vinegar, tart green apple, white grape, light barnyard and a hint of oak. Overall aroma strength is pretty weak.

Taste: Moderate sourness/acidity, more vinegar than lactic. Flavors follow the aroma with white grape and green apple being most prominent. Additional notes of oak (stronger than in the aroma) and slightly herbal.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, somewhat thin mouthfeel. Carbonation is low but adequate. Finishes tart and dry with a very mild bitterness.

Overall: I'm a huge Cantillon fan and their regular gueuze is one of my favorites, so I had very high expectations coming into this. With that being said, I was definitely disappointed in this one. It's a good gueuze for sure, but doesn't live up to it's hype or up to the standard of other Cantillon beers.

Pale and very clear - gueuze tumbler. Definitely a bigger layer of flavor and more sour finish than the standard gueuze. Barnyard funk, hay, citrus zest, a touch acidic, white grape skin, brett. Liked this very much - it was rainin Lou Pepe's in Brussels!

2009 vintage, poured into a tulip throughout the night.

Pours a still and clear hay color with a tiny bit of fizz that dissipates quickly. Tiny bubbles can be seen dancing to the top throughout the session. Nothing particularly stands out about the appearance, it's actually rather underwhelming.

Opens with pungent goat cheese and zesty lemon on the nose. Aroma could have filled the room if I weren't enjoying this while reducing some pizza sauce. Moves onto more barnyard like characteristics such as fresh straw and your typical wet horse blanket smell that a proper lambic takes on with age.

Nice cheesey funk and more of that zesty citrus on the tongue. Pretty lactic. Nothing really stands out in the flavor, It pretty much follows the nose of this beer. Earthy cheese and citrus zest, not as much funk on the tongue as there was on the nose though.

Thicker than medium body and not particularly drying on the palate, but leaves a puckering.

Good funk on the nose and a nice lactic sourness with moderate levels of funk on the palate. I'll be honest, I expected more out of this bottle. It has nice characteristics but nothing I haven't gotten out of a regular bottle of aged Cantillon Geueuze. The flavor may have been a little better in some of those tbh. Although, it is a good beer. I just wanted this to be a touch better.

2008 vintage.

Pours a pale golden colour, quite clear, with nice fluffy head, off-white, dense, sinking slowly enough but doesn't leave a great amount of lace residue behind. Not bad, but quite standard beer-look.

Smells bretty and funky, but yeah, really on the acidic side. Slight vinegar edge to it, slight raspberry aroma and some horse blanket, but mostly just sour. Am tempted to mark it down for the simplicity, but the fact is I like it, and am willing to give it the benefit of the doubt at this stage.

Taste is also very sour and funky. Has a slight grainy sweetness upfront that gets quite - actually make that extremely - sour and bitey early on. Lots of vinegar astringency that grows to a slight organic barnyard character on top of that, but it still retains that acidic, almost bitter, bite. I don't hate it of course, but still it seems like there's very little to this, like it's the basic 'let's infect the shit out of this' on an otherwise very simple base recipe.

Quite astingent, so it pulls your gums back over your teeth. Not a bad amount of substance and body to it, though.

This is such an off-putting beer to the uninitiated. I've had many beers of this style that I like, so I'm happy to sit here, drink and enjoy, but the fact is there's nothing special to really recommend this, so I almost feel like the sourness has an arrogance to it, like "if people don't like this then they're wrong and fuck them" whereas there should be more offered for 'lay' people to enjoy rather than just pure 'off', funky acidity.

2009 vintage

Slightly hazy. Aromas of hay, mild lemon, and a touch of sulfur. Lightly sweet with moderate tartness and lot of minerality. Medium carbonation and medium-light body. This has been a long-term want and I'm glad to have finally gotten to try it, but overall it was a bit of a disappointment and didn't stand up to most of the rest of the Cantillon line-up, in my opinion.

750 ml bottle, 2008 vintage bottled in 2011, poured into a tulip glass.

A- Pours a slightly hazy golden color, topped with an inch of white head that recedes to a thin layer, leaves little lacing.

S- Tart fruitiness with apple, lemon and vinegar. Funky barnyard aroma as well as some oak and a very light vanilla. The aroma is really nice and balanced.

T- Huge tartness, mostly lactic but also with some vinegar flavors, lots of white grapes and skins. Has some nice barnyard/hay and earthy funk. Has some oak, grape skin and tannins towards the end.

M- Medium-bodied, low carbonation with a dry finish.

O- Another excellent gueuze from Cantillon. I'm really not sure if I prefer this or their Classic Gueuze, it's pretty close. Very tasty, highly drinkable, and all around a great beer.

,From my humble beginnings thinking hoegarden was the best beer in the world, to today when i proudly proclaim my beer snobbishness to all those who will listen, i stand at at the pinnacle of my beer existence. Lou pepe gueze! Being an absolute sour fanatic, i was quite excited to get my hands on this. Not to mention an etre gourmet order set me back a pretty penny, it was all aboard the hype train express for me. Strictly in terms of guezes, i have had the 3f oude gueze and oude gueze golden blend ( champion) and some mass produced guezes like tiquilin, marriage parfiat etc . I have also had all the RR stuff and some some cantillon lambics. Now on to the LPG . Pours clear and thin, no haze and an orange yellowy pee color. Smells crisp and with a decent gueze funkness , pretty solid there but nothing overwhelming or impressive yet.

Flavor: Huge letdown ( let it be known my expectations were sky high) it has a mild gueze flavor with some lemon notes up front, but quickly tails off and you are left with a dry, almost metallic after taste that doesnt satisfy in the least. Not a bad gueze or anything like that, but given the ratings and reputation , i was hoping for so much more. It improved slightly as it warmed up with a little more cheese , funkness, but overall very subdued and the fact that the flavor died so quickly in the mouth was quite perturbing to say the least. Shame on you cantillon. drie fonteinen oude gueze golden blend smashes this brew like barry bonds smashes a hanging curveball cira 2002

on to the next !

2002 sticker 750 ml bottle generously shared by cpferris. Big thanks to Chad. Pours a clear amber with a small white head that settles to a ring. The aroma is super funky. Lots of must. Grapefruit, mushroom, forest floor. The taste is quite tart and funky. There is grapefruit, lemon, and apricot. The Finish is very tart and funky with some oak and a bit of astringency. Medium body. Low carbonation. Quite great. Possibly the funkiest beer I've had.

2002 vintage shared by cpferris at a recent tasting. Reviewed from notes.

Pours near flat, clear and golden. Reminds me of iced tea or close to it. The nose/taste is very funky as expected with scents of earth, soil, stone fruits, un-ripened berries and slight green apples. Despite looking near flat there is plenty of fine carbonation on the palate. Fuzzy mouthfeel,good dose of acid. Reminds me of sweet tarts. Solid all-around. Thanks again Chad.

2007 vintage

A: Rich golden, great clarity. Pours with a bit of fizz but is mostly flat.

S: Deep brettanomyces earthiness, vinous, pears and cooked apples, a tiny bit of acidity on the nose.

T: The acidity is more apparent in flavor. Tangy oak, beautiful fruitiness ranging from pear to grape, tangerine with a twang. Everything enveloped in brett funk.

M: Low carbonation, very dry.

Complex and deeply earth, I prefer this over the golden blend gueuze from 3F.

First had: part of a Nov. '12 bottle share.
2008 vintage (on the label).

I naturally assumed Lauren (ThoreauLikeAGirl) would break out a Cantillon of some kind, and indeed she did. This bottle followed a Classic Gueuze that she also provided. A little bit of stinky residue sat atop the cork on this bottle, but we wiped it away and proceeded to open it.

Golden-colored, surprisingly and utterly clear, Champagne-like bubbles rose to a small foamy white head that receded to a thin layer within a few seconds; no real lacing to speak of. Aroma was fairly mild, notes of funk, horseblanket, and minor touches of acetic/lactic acid. About the same in the taste, mellowed-out with a few years of aging, fairly oaky, funk, hay, lemon, apples skins, cobwebs, wheaty malts, again, minor acidic notes, but nothing too tart or overbearing. Light-medium body, and decently drinkable, I just really don't like the oak/wood quality in this beer; I think it clashes with the other flavors too much. After having the Classic Gueuze first, I definitely liked this one better than that. I've had the Classic before, but it was nice to be able to compare these two back to back.

'08 into a matching Cantillon tumbler. The brew appears a hazed golden yellow color with a firm finger of yellowish tan head. The cap is composed of rather large bubbles and fades fairly quickly. However, it maintains a thin film across the top from constantly rising bubbles of carbonation. A swirl agitates more bubbles out of solution and paints a bit of spotty lacing on the glass.

The nose is pretty fantastic on this with tropical suggestions of fruit playing all around the classic cantillon funk. Hints of grapefruit and pineapple interplay nicely with some wet hay, cardboard, must, cheese and moist cork/oak. There is a dampness about this brew's nose that lingers around but as soon as you try and hone in on it, it dissolves away into the fruit citrus aspects that once warm are a bit lemony.

The taste is tart with rindy elements of grapefruit juice and lemon zest before the funk comes into play. Moist oak, mildew, straw, sharp blue cheese and a bit of must. Mid palate there is a hint of melon flavor that really does a nice job balancing out the acidity of this. Towards the backend, there is a bit more grain inclusion than I ever remember tasting in this brew during previous experiences. However, it all plays together nice and forms a beautifully balanced geuze. As the brew goes beyond ideal temperature, a bit of mineral earthy edge comes out that is almost meaty (i dont know how else to describe it) with some more focus on stinky footy cheese.

This is medium bodied with a modest amount of lively carbonation. It is complex, refreshing and easy drinking with seemingly no alcohol impact. I am going to venture a guess and say this is about the 4th or 5th time I have had lou pepe geuze between the 05 and 08 vintage. I shit you not, this beer tastes wildly different with every experience. This is perhaps the most fruited and zesty iteration of any cantillon I have had. I hope my other bottles are like this!

My first cantillon, figured i might as well do it right
A - bartender poured it four me, good pour results in small white head that goes away fairly quick, loks almost like apple juice, but a little more opaque
S - lemon,y, barnyardy i guess is the best way to describe it
T - amazing, starts out a little les intense, btu as you dirnk ti the lemon comes out more and more, very sour tart finish,
M - easy to dirnk very crisp
O - top five beers i have ever had

vintage 08

a - murky hazy golden color with a generous white frothy head. nice lacing. chunked on the glass.

s - grassy rotten egg sour funk. some lemon really nice smell. not as pungent as the kriek we had earlier.

t - very nice gueze. good grassy elements to smooth out the sourness. lemon zest and some citrus with sour eggy funkiness.

m - crisp and refreshing.

o - overall impressivegueze. would love to try it fresher to see what the 4 years did to it, but really nice mellow and balanced gueze.

Until today, I'd only had Classic Gueuze, and this completely blows it away. Awesome aroma with much more complexity and depth of flavor than the regular gueuze. Stronger puckering sourness too. All in all, a much more mature lambic (in more ways than one) that I wish was more easily available.

2005 Vintage.

Beer is dark golden with a nice, thick white head. Moderate retention and lacing.

Smell is funk city! Horse blanket scents dominate, along with yeast, wheat, hay and lemon. A bit of a sweet malty backbone. A complex scent but all tied up neatly together- very unified.

Taste is full of funk like the nose- barnyard and hay. Lemon and some other citrus flavours, perhaps a hint of apple. Crisp wheat. The beer is very dry. Tart and a bit sour, but not nearly as much as expected- assumedly balanced by the sugar. Some peppery, spicy flavours, almost like a funky, mutant saison. The finish reveals a dry fruity flavour that makes me think a bit of champagne. Very complex, very good.

Light bodied and low carbonation. Puckers the mouth.

Overall, excellent. A very nice beer. No problem finishing this bottle solo.

A massive thanks goes out to cmrillo for bringing this one out during his own 40 Beers* @ 40 Birthday Bash! 2008 Vintage! Served from bottle into a Cantillon taster flute. Poured a golden yellow with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, lemon rine, lemon zest, funk, sour, and tart. The flavor was of sweet malt, lemon rine, funk, citrus, sour, and tart. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a great brew. The Lou Pepe treatment really added a nice touch to this brew. There was a nice citrus/lemon aspect going on in this one in both the aroma and flavor. This made it really easy to drink and balanced out the sour and tart characters going on. Definitely worth trying if you have not done so.

Appearance: 3.5
Hazy honey yellow body with a thin white head that immediately fades to a thin rim around the edge of the glass.

Smell: 3.5
A tart, slight funk nose with notes of lemon, faint candy sugar, and soft bready malt. Subtle, but pleasant. No vingearness is detected.

Taste: 4
Initial moderate sharp sourness, with notes of lemon. Then sweeter/ bready aspects of the malt come through to contrast the sour elements. Also get faint notes of hops. Finishes with a lingering sourness, with hints of tart candy and lemon. Overall, very crisp profile that softens and sweetens as the beer warms. The flavours are simple, but there is good balance, esp with the malt.

Mouthfeel: 4.5
Soft mild carbonation. Mild to moderate thickness. Moderate sourness. A good balance overall in sweet versus sour, and quite appropriate, with just the right amount of pucker to be sour and refreshing, but not too overwhelming. The lingering sourness on the palate makes you want to go back for more.

Overall: 4
A well balance, refined beer with a nice flavour profile, with prominent sourness and great malt notes. Easy drinking.

Served in a traditional Cantillon tumbler

Upon popping the cap, a bit of liquid fizzled out the top of the bottle. This could have spelled disaster. The beer poured a nearly crystal clear, straw yellow color. A tight, creamy, bright white, two-finger head topped the body. Luckily, the seeping liquid did not signify a flat bottle. The head faded to a lasting ring of froth.

The nose was super funky and musty, yet also bright and lemony. You could sense that the critters have been active. Good amount of oak. Wheaty, dry and tart. The tartness however was offset by a mild sweetness. Overall, very smooth and pleasant. Exceptionally well balanced. On the second pour, some of the yeast sneaked into the beer and the nose turned more powdery and dry.

The beer was remarkably flavorful, yet smooth and balanced. Crackery malts came through on the front end. Soon, however, the sourness kicked in. Super strong lemon notes. Quite tart, yet also a bit sweet. Crisp and wheaty. Moderately acidic. Must and leather notes were apparent in the center. Funky. The finish was also nicely balanced. Very lemony. A fair amount of earthy hops came through as well. Exceptional.

The mouthfeel was surprisingly rich, frothy and creamy. Super smooth and supple on the palate. Astonishingly full bodied for the style. The liquid contained a fine bubbled, moderate effervescence.

Cantillon Lou Pepe Gueuze is one of the best spontaneously fermented beers to have ever passed my lips. Although it may not be super complex, it is immensely flavorful and astonishingly drinkable. I wish I had purchased more of these when I had the chance to do so.

A bright, light orange and a tall white head. Highly carbonated. Lots of lace left on the glass.

A spicy, musty, funky aroma, consisting of bright fruit, lemon and apple, tangy Brett yeast, hay and grass, and lots of barnyard funk. Pretty awesome. Seems comforting, inviting, and welcoming.

The flavor is similar to the aroma, but perhaps a bit more bright with fruit--lemon, apple, and pear. The tart funk and sourness is huge here as well, though balances exceptionally well with the sweet, fruity flavors. Tremendous!

Light, bubbly, airy mouthfeel--an absolute pleasure.

A definitive version of the style. A classic. Just about perfect.

After a St. Patrick's Day filled with Imperial Stouts (no Guinness, here), we figured we should hit something lighter, and when @LaitueGonflable mentioned that he'd "love something sour" there was no question about what was next.

This was the 2008 vintage, tasted in 2012.

Pours a slightly hazed, but refined golden colour, with a mild, frothy but lively head of pure white. Ah, Gueuze really is the champagne of beers, isn't it? Fine bead of carbonation and a fluid but solid body that holds its carbonation well. Looks really excellent.

Nose is classic gueuze, with refined peppery overtones, mingles with earthy aromas and a sharp plastic character. Latex rubber, slight resin, wine cork, cellar, dust. Oh, it does such a wonderful job of riffing on the classic aromas, while still maintaining its basis. Lovely.

Clear and clean on the palate, and surprisingly mellow, without the biting, oesophageally challenging acidity that marks many a Cantillon brew. Light vinous characters, with a touch of oak, some banana leaf, and a hint of pepper, but without the bite or the piquancy. Oh, it is so very refined and sophisticated. It perhaps doesn't have the intense complexity of some gueuzes, but there's something very special about the smoothness, the roundness and the clean power of it. It's just lovely.

Feel is clear and bright, with a very fine carbonation that only goes so far as to enliven the palate; never to overwhelm.

Really gorgeous beer. In fact, very near sublime. It's so smooth, and yet with all the refined haughtiness of the best gueuzes. I love that the acidity is so restrained. It makes for a less raw and powerful, but more sophisticated brew. Really, the skill that has gone into its preparation is astonishing.

Bought a bottle of this at Pizzeria Paradiso tonight. 2008 vintage, 750ml bottle poured into a snifter.

a - Pour a somewhat transparent bright yellow color with one inch of fluffy white head and low carbonation evident. Looks pretty nice.

s - Smells of funky cheese, oak, tart fruity malts, citrus hops, earthy notes. Super funky and cheesey, really great.

t - Tastes of funky cheese, sour fruits, oak, citrus hops, floral hops, earthy notes, light must, acedic notes, barnyard funk. Again, super funky, really awesome.

m - Light to medium body and low carbonation. Very smooth and easy to drink beer.

o - Overall this is a fantastic gueuze and an improvement on the Classic Gueuze, which is one of my all time favorites. Another winner in the Lou Pepe series, I think I would rank this very slightly behind the LP Kriek and in front of the LP Framboise. Super funky and cheesey, would love to get some bottles of this one.
