2001 vintage. Thanks to SheepNutz for sharing this gem with us. The beer poured an orange color with a slight ring over top. The nose was awesome. Full of lemoney acidic tones with the tartness and sour grapey notes as well. I had the Cuvee Renee recently, and this Cantillon was much more balanced and subdued. The flavor was much the same. All the sour, acid and tart I want from a gueuze, but without the overpowering pucker. The flavors lingered long as well, but not in a bad way. The feel was moderate with just a slight carbontion. The finish was very dry, sucking the moisture from my mouth. Very easy drinking and smooth. Even though the finish was dry, it was very refreshing. Bottled in 2001, purchased from the brewery directly...

Appearance: a stunning pale gold with a slight haze and a dense creamy layer of off-white foam speckled with chunks of cork (the cork would not come out so I had to shove it into the bottle instead)

Aroma: dusty malts, apple cider vinegar, hint of citrus, horse blanket, slight honey notes

Flavor: sumptuously balanced tartness with a crisply dry wheaty nuance, subtle lambic "funk", finishes dryish with a lingering acidity overlying a mild enteric bitterness

Mouthfeel: light body, spritzy but fine-beaded carbonation, crisp texture

Other comments: Wow! This is a truly amazing geuze! I bought this bottle some time in 2003 (I think) from Cantillon when I was living in Brussels. It has been stashed in my "cellar" since then. Now that I'm in England (and getting seriously bored with English ales), I decided to dig this one up again. I'm both glad and disappointed that I did. Glad because this is just a fantastic beer; disappointed because it is the only bottle I had. Oh well! That's the problem with beer, I guess, you end up drinking it. Anyway, Cantillon can sometimes be overpowering, especially to the unitiated, but this is very accessible. Would be a great "starter geuze", if you are OK with sharing it with someone who might not appreciate it! (1,330 characters)

Aaahhhh... now this is the good stuff.

Pours a bright, effervescent luminous orange with beams of golden orange-y-ness. Two or three inches of white foam head that quickly settled down to a thin slick crust.

Smells like a child's tears mixed with forlorn and lonely puppy dog. Also, there is lemony vinegar, oak, and a nice bouquet of funky horse blanket. I can tell this is going to be sour.

And it is, but it ain't a sour bomb. The smell, again, is liquified misery with a tinge of broken dreams. More big time soury oak, woodsy vinegar lemon, a bit of green apple/pear bite, and a definite unripe vinous aftertaste. So delicious.

I'm really enjoying this, and the sourness is well balanced. (697 characters)

Bottle into red wine glass. 2005 on sticker/2007 on cork/2008 on label. No matter what year it is, I was giddy to find this at State Line liquors in Maryland.

Pours a lightly hazy gold-orange with a fluffy, big bubbled white head that settles down to some soapy suds floating around on the surface of the beer. Has a beautiful glow to it.

Nose is perfect. Green apples and lemon, a nice layer of slightly musty horseblanket, prominent oaky vanilla, even some orangey notes in there. Very interesting - brighter, smoother, and fruitier than expected, but my mouth is already watering.

Taste is everything a gueuze is supposed to be. Lemons and green apples mingle with horseblanket and some old leather, with some dry oak coming out towards the finish. Just a bit of vinegar below 50 degrees that tends to disappear as the beer warms to around 50-55. Acidity is there but fairly light, and the finish is dry, oaky, a bit tannic.

Mouthfeel is excellent. Carbonation is there but is light and manageable, body is medium-full, dry, with a very light acidity in the back of the throat.

Drinkability is excellent - full bodied and not at all shy, but at the same time not overwhelming.

Really, an exceptional gueuze. Complex and fantastically flavorful, but at the same time very drinkable and not overwhelming or harsh in any way - really, what ever beer should try to be. (1,375 characters)

A - Pours with a small, white head of foam that disappears quickly and leaves no lace. The body is a brilliantly clear, copper color.

S - Musty funk up front with some goat qualities and a bit of tropical fruit. Kind of spicy with a hint of nutmeg and clove.

T - Nice and sour up front with some wheat flavor and lots of funk. Toffee malt notes in the middle with lemony sourness. Some bitterness shows through in the finish with musty complexity and clean, lactic sourness that doesn't linger on the palate.

M - Medium body, moderately high carbonation, and a dry finish.

D - Complex and drinkable, this is a classic gueuze. The funk is complex and the sourness is substantial, but smooth enough that it doesn't crush the palate. The malt character is noticeable and there are some complex spicy notes that make this stand out from other examples of the style. The aroma in particular is very nice, with a complex blend of musty acids that keep me raising the glass to my nose between sips just to enjoy the smell again. This is a very expensive beer, but if any beer can live up to this kind of price tag, this one does. (1,126 characters)

Pours out a cloudy effervescent with lots of small white bubbles. One finger of suds and small lacing.
Cherry and lemon zest with just a hint of a caramel sweetness underlying the extreme sourness.
Taste is lemony orange with just a tad of sweetness. Mmmmm good.
Almost an asprin-like feel to the mouth after the sourness goes away. Very dry but with lemon peel with a touch of caramel sweetness.
Great session brew if I could get this all the time. Great! (456 characters)

2010 sticker bottled in 2013.

Appearance: Pale yellow bodied beer with 2 full fingers of white head that eventually drops to thin ring around the glass.

Smell: Tons of cantillion funk and light tartness. Slightly fruity and grain.

Taste: Tons of funk and oak. Light sweetness and funkiness in the background. Pears and honey with a hint of white grape and lemon. Funk is dominate, but does take away all the delicate flavors of the gueuze.

Mouthfeel: light bodied beer with low carbonation. Soft, delicate and creamy carbonation. This drinks so easily its just silly.

Overall: This is my favorite of the Lou Pepe Series! Fram and Kriek are also amazing, but a gueuze is the perfect style for cantillion funk. I think this is far superior to cantillion classic gueuze. This beer is in my top 5 gueuze that I have tried. Cantillion LPG is not quite as good as, but gets close to 3F Lente, 3F Golden Blend, and Bullfrog Vertiable gueuze. (999 characters)

Thanks to Steve for sending this to me. Shared with some fellow Cantillon lovers. Lou Pepe Gueuze 2006, bottled in 2008.

A: The pour is a slightly cloudy amber color with a nice fluffy white head.

S: The nose is incredibly funky and wild. Lots of musty oak, straw, earth, and plenty of barnyard. Certainly lactic and tart, but not quite as much lemon and green apple as Classic Gueuze.

T: A lot of funk, primarily of barnyard, earth, and musty, wet oak. The tartness is present, but not super intense like other Cantillon beers. Notes of lemon, green apple, and some more oak.

M: The body is medium with a smooth, medium, rolling carbonation.

D: Like the other Lou Pepe beers, this one is really easy to drink. Not insanely sour but well balanced and nice to sit down and drink. (783 characters)

2005 vintage. This is confusing - the label says it's the 05, another sticker on the back says it's the '02 and YET another label says it was bottled in January of '03. And the cork? says bottled in 2007. Oh well, let's go with the 05, shall we? I'm cracking this tonight to remind myself of what a Cantillon beer is like, it's been a month since I've had one and I'm looking forward to trying some on tap in a couple of days.

A: Bring out the hazmat suit 'cos there's some foul black stuff as you pry off the cap. The cork comes out surprisingly quietly and as I pour this in my Duvel glass, an absolutely gorgeous crystal clear orange beer with a 3-finger thick white head appears. Retention is nothing special but good for the style, with some lacework being left behind. Awesome

S: Lemony barnyard funk right off the bat with some pronounced acidity. Complex and earthy with some wet hay. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this beer isn't outrageous or over the top. To my nose, it smells pretty balanced and complex, not hair-singeing like the Iris is. There are some cidery notes that come up once it warms up along with a hint of oak/vanilla sweetness.

T: It's got the characteristic Cantillon palate. Opening up with a pleasing palate-rousing lemony sourness, there is some mildly wheaty/cidery flavor that comes through, creating an illusion of sweetness. The acidity is just beautiful - the acetic character soft and gentle and makes this beer remarkably refreshing. Funk is represented with some barnyard-like flavors. Finishes long, dry, tart and with some tannic character. Wonderful.

M: Light in body in a way that almost makes me think it's watery. Surprisingly gentle carbonation, this beer is remarkably refreshing. The finish is pretty spectacular in it's length and gentleness.

D: This is hysterically drinkable. Half a bottle is gone in 15 minutes.

Notes: While I pretty much love everything Cantillon does, I wonder if the arrival of Russian River will stimulate Cantillon to do something new/different, much like Nasum reinvigorated Napalm Death. That said, I could drink this every day and not get tired of it.

The nose is beautiful, bright lemony sourness, with low tannins, low earthy funk, a more delicate and restrained gueuze. The sourness is interesting in that it has only a lemony character without the grapefruit presence. The palate is similar - all-round, there's a great lemony sourness, nice brightness, nice grassy and hay character. Nice lemon rind character. Great finish, this is a refreshing gueuze. My 400th beer review on this site. This is the 2001 vintage which I picked up in Belgium.

Pours nice and hazy of an amber with slight hints of blond coming through under a slight white head. As with all of Cantillon brews, sour comes on quite strong. But this is not a bad thing. Three years have formed this beer into a well balanced crafted nectar. Full on tongue assult. Cantillon is da bomb my friends. (409 characters)

After a St. Patrick's Day filled with Imperial Stouts (no Guinness, here), we figured we should hit something lighter, and when @LaitueGonflable mentioned that he'd "love something sour" there was no question about what was next.

This was the 2008 vintage, tasted in 2012.

Pours a slightly hazed, but refined golden colour, with a mild, frothy but lively head of pure white. Ah, Gueuze really is the champagne of beers, isn't it? Fine bead of carbonation and a fluid but solid body that holds its carbonation well. Looks really excellent.

Nose is classic gueuze, with refined peppery overtones, mingles with earthy aromas and a sharp plastic character. Latex rubber, slight resin, wine cork, cellar, dust. Oh, it does such a wonderful job of riffing on the classic aromas, while still maintaining its basis. Lovely.

Clear and clean on the palate, and surprisingly mellow, without the biting, oesophageally challenging acidity that marks many a Cantillon brew. Light vinous characters, with a touch of oak, some banana leaf, and a hint of pepper, but without the bite or the piquancy. Oh, it is so very refined and sophisticated. It perhaps doesn't have the intense complexity of some gueuzes, but there's something very special about the smoothness, the roundness and the clean power of it. It's just lovely.

Feel is clear and bright, with a very fine carbonation that only goes so far as to enliven the palate; never to overwhelm.

Really gorgeous beer. In fact, very near sublime. It's so smooth, and yet with all the refined haughtiness of the best gueuzes. I love that the acidity is so restrained. It makes for a less raw and powerful, but more sophisticated brew. Really, the skill that has gone into its preparation is astonishing. (1,743 characters)

Bought a bottle of this at Pizzeria Paradiso tonight. 2008 vintage, 750ml bottle poured into a snifter.

a - Pour a somewhat transparent bright yellow color with one inch of fluffy white head and low carbonation evident. Looks pretty nice.

s - Smells of funky cheese, oak, tart fruity malts, citrus hops, earthy notes. Super funky and cheesey, really great.

t - Tastes of funky cheese, sour fruits, oak, citrus hops, floral hops, earthy notes, light must, acedic notes, barnyard funk. Again, super funky, really awesome.

m - Light to medium body and low carbonation. Very smooth and easy to drink beer.

o - Overall this is a fantastic gueuze and an improvement on the Classic Gueuze, which is one of my all time favorites. Another winner in the Lou Pepe series, I think I would rank this very slightly behind the LP Kriek and in front of the LP Framboise. Super funky and cheesey, would love to get some bottles of this one. (928 characters)

2002 sticker 750 ml bottle generously shared by cpferris. Big thanks to Chad. Pours a clear amber with a small white head that settles to a ring. The aroma is super funky. Lots of must. Grapefruit, mushroom, forest floor. The taste is quite tart and funky. There is grapefruit, lemon, and apricot. The Finish is very tart and funky with some oak and a bit of astringency. Medium body. Low carbonation. Quite great. Possibly the funkiest beer I've had. (451 characters)

2007. 750 ml bottle into, in de verzekering tegen de grotto dorst lambic/gueuze glass. Huge, active, fluffy, soapy head with high retention and lacing. Vintage 2007, sampled in 2011. The corked and capped 750ml bottle was decanted into two pint glasses.

A slightly hazy gold with a thin white head which soon diminished to a thin ring.

The funky barnyard smell is there. Some subdued cherry fruit notes. Tastes include mild fruit, apple cider. Lemon dominates at first. Very smooth in the middle. Some tannins. A long tart finish with a sour twist at the end.

A light body with low carbonation. Very well melded creating a "sum is greater than the parts"effect. Less sour but more subdued and mellow than I expected. An awesome gueuse. Opens up as it warms. I could drink this all night. A great last beer of the night. Nothing can top this. (692 characters)

750mL 2005 black foil thanks to Manuele at Ma Che Siete. From the basket, it pours a hazy, glowing, light orange with a fizzy white head dwindling down quickly from the acid. Aroma is massive white grapefruit, blood orange, sweet orange sorbet, peach, subtle funk. Very fresh and rich blood orange dominant. As it warms you are rewarded with mace and wet cinnamon stick. Taste is dried grapefruit, pomelo, lemon tart, lactic fattiness. Bitter white grapefruit and pomelo come in to balance the sourness, but there is just nowhere near the balance and freshness I get from 2005 Iris or Russian River Beatification. Palate is uber mouth watering, so lactic sour that it is near lacerative (I had to drink most of the bottle myself unfortunately). But in small quantities the palate is fresh, fruity, and soft. Really so beautiful. Bound to age extremely well. (857 characters)

A bright, light orange and a tall white head. Highly carbonated. Lots of lace left on the glass.

A spicy, musty, funky aroma, consisting of bright fruit, lemon and apple, tangy Brett yeast, hay and grass, and lots of barnyard funk. Pretty awesome. Seems comforting, inviting, and welcoming.

The flavor is similar to the aroma, but perhaps a bit more bright with fruit--lemon, apple, and pear. The tart funk and sourness is huge here as well, though balances exceptionally well with the sweet, fruity flavors. Tremendous!

Light, bubbly, airy mouthfeel--an absolute pleasure.

A definitive version of the style. A classic. Just about perfect. (698 characters)

Poured from a bottle into a flute. I had this at the bottle funk even at Teresa's Next Door.

Appearance: Pours a slightly cloudy golden color with an orange tint. There is a little pink that shows up in the light. Hardly any carbonation at all.

Smell: Herbal funk with sour lemon and a mild sweetness.

Taste: Unbelievably smooth. Very sour but I wouldn't call it harsh. Lemon with bitter aged hops. One of the best gueuzes I have had the pleasure to taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a mild amount of carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This was so smooth my wife enjoyed it, and she hates sour beer. Just awesome. (623 characters)

A wonderful 2005 vintage bottle. I had waited a long time to finally be able to try this one, so when given the chance to trade for it I jumped at the chance. Served chilled from the cellar, this corked, capped, and wrapped 750ml bottle was decanted into an oversized wine glass. Consumed on 11/16/2008.

The pour was wonderful. The best I could have expected for sure. Rich, and bright, vibrant golden yellow in color. A large, perhaps three inch high head of white foam then came up over the top and settled down wonderfully into a one inch layer of foam that came up across the entire top of the glass. Gorgeous side glass lacing and a wonderful presence of carbonation.

The aroma was a bit lighter then I was expecting, but still tremendously good. Rich nose of tart apple vinegar, sour grapes and a touch of wet hay. Enormously complex, as it warms it comes across with a light wheat or herbal like quality and just the tiniest amount of spice prickling the nose. The flavor was more of the same. Rich notes of sour and biting vinegar flavor coming across on it right away. A little bit one sided, and not as huge as I would have wanted given the stature to which this one is held to, but still extremely solid and worth it. Light grapes and even a touch of wheat coming through mid palate, especially as it starts to warm. Mellow grassy flavors are mingling very well within the flavor now. Smooth, easy transgression with the carbonation being nearly perfect here, and a light feel that was just spot on. As for drinkability, this one is top notch; I could not have found an easier beer in the style to put down.

Overall while not my favorite sour I have ever had, it is up there. This is about as solid as they come, and priced right along with the upper echelon of beers. I would have no issue trying this again, and to be honest would be curious to see how it holds up in the even earlier vintages. (1,911 characters)

Label reads 2006, corks says bottled in 2008. Aside from dates, the bottle is in French and Dutch as it was brought back from the Netherlands. I've been having a fair number of amazing oude gueuzes lately, and this hits all the marks, but goes just a little deeper. Yes, there's the sharp lemon-lime juice sour/acidic tang that pulls at the back of your jaw. There's the toasted oak, but also with a hint of ash and pepper. And then I also taste a not inappropriately cheesey funk like you'd get from a nice, fatty blue cheese. What else? Mmmmm, there's a light fresh garden herb and celery note, dry white grape, and wheat cracker. God damn this beer is amazing.

UPDATE 6/14/10: Had a bottle from 2005. The tartness was a little more smooth, but it was no less divine to drink. (779 characters)

A massive thanks goes out to cmrillo for bringing this one out during his own 40 Beers* @ 40 Birthday Bash! 2008 Vintage! Served from bottle into a Cantillon taster flute. Poured a golden yellow with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, lemon rine, lemon zest, funk, sour, and tart. The flavor was of sweet malt, lemon rine, funk, citrus, sour, and tart. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a great brew. The Lou Pepe treatment really added a nice touch to this brew. There was a nice citrus/lemon aspect going on in this one in both the aroma and flavor. This made it really easy to drink and balanced out the sour and tart characters going on. Definitely worth trying if you have not done so. (849 characters)

2000 vintage. Thanks for the aged Gueuze, dyan! Consumed on 11/6/2009 and poured into a snifter. The beer is cloudy light orange with a nice frothy two finger head. Retention is excellent.

The nose is horsey Brett with notes of wet blanket and wet leather. Tart lemon peel combines with mustiness and a distinct earthiness. Low lactic character is evident as well as a dash of vinegar.

The funk in the flavor is a bit more restrained. It's lemon with earthiness, low lactic sourness, and a moderate tannic quality. Brett provides mustiness and subtle barnyard notes. The finish is tart lemon peel with a drying tannic quality and a low level of acetic character. Overall, the flavor is soft and well rounded. Sheer quality from Cantillon. (740 characters)

2006 Vintage

A: Hazy golden-straw colored body. Healthy sized frothy off-white head. Decent retention with nice spotty lacing.

S: Potent woody funk lays atop an acidic lemon-pear citric base. A generalized musty barnyard character carries the day as expected from a Cantillon Gueuze.

T: Bright, acidic lemon leads as a more subtle woody, musty funk fills towards the back. More acidic and sour than the classic Cantillon Gueuze.

M: Moderate carbonation, medium bodied. Profoundly acidic with a slightly puckering sourness.

D: Quite the Gueuze. Even more age should treat this beer favorably. Can't wait to crack my 2000 vintage. (634 characters)

The second beer in my series of sours. I wonder how it will compare to the Tilquin I had yesterday.

Appearance: The initial pour yields a pretty clear, bright golden body topped by a thick white head, each subsequent pour yields more haze and a darker apricot colour. Head retention and lacing are pretty average, but that is expected from a Gueuze.

Smell: Wow, my first impression is that this is a million miles away from the other Cantillons that I have had - the funk profile seems quite different (no cheese notes) and there is actually a hint of sweetness.
Initially the nose is a bit weak but after a few minutes it has opened up nicely. Notes include: Musty basement, dust, old books, leather, oak, earthy mushrooms, hay and lightly sweet citrus. As the beer approaches room temperature there is a distinct note of sweet peach juice!

Taste: Wow, this is no where near as tart as other Cantillons I have had. In addition the tartness seems to be of a some what different nature to that of other gueuzes. Generally the sourness of a gueuze is noted immediately and puckers the mouth. In this case the initial flavour offers a hint of sweetness and the tartness comes into play in the back of your throat just as you swallow.
The flavour is a little stronger than the nose and notes include: White wine vinegar, tart dried apricots, musty basement, light barnyard, oak, green apples, earthy wild mushrooms, old leather, mossy tree bark and a touch of lemon. I would prefer to be able to give the flavour 4.75 rather than 4.5.

Mouthfeel: Pretty much perfect for the style - medium body with a medium-high level of fine carbonation. The finish is dry and lightly tannic. I could just gulp this stuff down all day long!

Overall: Stunning beer, really complex and delicate. I think this would pair incredibly well with delicate seafood.
I will certainly be buying more of this in the future; I would love to see how it develops with age.
Lastly I don't understand why this is classified as a gueuze as it is only two year old lambic - no blending! (2,175 characters)
