2008 Vintage drunk in 2008.

Glorious colour of orange red with some brick orange around the edges. No head and very low carbonation. Looks like wine.

Amazing nose that screams old oak barrels. Some real strong nutty notes (possible sulfides) are quickly over run by beautiful cherry and raspberry aromas. Then the funk arrives. Not over the top - more earthy funkiness than overtly strong Brett - kind of subdued. Maybe a touch antiseptic with air/warmth. SO much like a Burgundy it is not funny.

Some delicious sour cherry fruit dominates the palate, with some hints of other red fruits. The cherry really picks up with air/warmth and helps level out the very strong acidity. Some sweetness on the mid palate which gives this a real cherry candy feel. Drying tannins. Cantillon class as always.

As with the other Cantillons I have tried, this will not be everyones cup of tea. But I dig it...so complex.

Cork Date of 2000; Sampled May 2010; served only faintly chilled at about 60°F / 15°C
A soft pour into my Cantillon globe glass (what a sexy glass) produces an almost two-finger thick, lightly pink tinged, off-white colored head. The beer is brilliantly clear and a rich cherry color; when held up to the light it shows some touches of gold in its pale ruby depths. The aroma is fantastically tart in a very smooth, appetizing way. There are ample funky notes of urea, medicinal phenolics, musky barn animal notes, crusty old sweaty leather aromatics as well as freshly curing scents of leather. There is a bright fruit note that is just noticeable at times, it hints at cherry aromatics, but then becomes fleeting and disappears underneath the tart and funk when you go in for a deeper inspection.

Perhaps not quite as sour as I was expecting, but this is exceedingly sour as a nice ripe Cantillon should be. Bone dry, but still manages to have just a hint of viscosity to it; some tannic oak notes help to boost this perception along with a palate lingering light astringency. The texture is also helped by a solid, though not aggressive carbonation that adds some zip to this beer as it rolls across the tongue. My second sip sees me noticing a faint, but fleshy, cherry note that is more tart than anything, but does capture that slight floral note that cherries have; it almost tastes like a succulent flower of some sort (hints of hibiscus and maybe some faint rose like flavors are found here as well). The acidity is all Lactic in character, with not perceived acetic character at all. The perception of the acidity softens as my palate gets used to it, though this remains uncompromisingly sour throughout. It also ends up with a hint of sweetness (perhaps more perceived than actual), which helps to accentuate the cherry flavors that have by and large aged out over the years. Oak flavors of wood and light spice are a touch more noticeable than I usually notice in a Lambic, but still play only a minor role in the flavor.

A second pour sees this getting a touch hazed, with a corresponding yeasty note to the aroma. The yeast follows through in the flavor adding a touch of richness to this brew; though the oak seems to add to the perceived richness, in what is otherwise a light, quaffable brew. Musty enough to make me thing of cobwebs and damp, moldy cellars, plus there is a muskiness that adds a funky flare

Mad props to my friend KM for dragging this beer, along with the sexy, brewery glassware back with her from Amsterdam; it wasn't new to me, but damn a bottle of aged Cantillon will always be received with wide open arms. Simply a fantastic bottle of Lambic, I wish I had hundreds of Lambics in the cellar as I would drink these all the time. Age has definitely removed the bright cherry character here, but I like the soft, sort of floral note (hibiscus and rose really are really apt descriptors) that this has turned into. Cantillon once again achieves a level of complexity and balance (assuming you can get past the bracing acidity) that I have come to crave; no one does it better when it comes to the bugs and time.

Only lightly carbonated, it struggles to produce a thin pink head. The beer is very clear, and is a deep cherry red color. The aroma is sour and musty with notes of vinegar and wood. The first taste, as usual with Cantillon products, is shockingly sour. It is bone dry, and as such it is hard to pick out the cherry flavor at first. It is here though; there is a cherry meat edge, which complements the acidity of this beer. It adds a certain fullness and a tannic backdrop. The best I can describe the cherry character is that of a meaty-cherry flavor. The Lambic character contributes lemon, vinegar (though only slightly), musty, funky mushroom and perhaps a bit of leathery horse-blanket brettanomyces character.

This beer is much better when fully carbonated, but the complexity of this beer is such that I am not at all disappointed in the lack of carbonation. This is certainly a challenging hard-Lambic version of a Kriek. Lambic neophytes beware, there are no syrupy cherry notes here. Overall quite delicious and refreshing.

Sampled at the Brewery, 2001:
The Cantillon Kriek has a sweet cherry nose to it. Not as sour or hard as some of the other Cantillon offerings. This Kriek has a definite cherry skin taste to it, a tannic edge that carries through the finish. As expected from Cantillon this beer is not sweet at all, quite bone dry in fact.

Bright cherry color with a somewhat lacking head. The has sour cherries, musky oak and barnyard funk. Very traditional flavor. A tart, funky lambic blended with faint and delicate cherries. Super complex and not overly sweet. The crisp body has a nice dry finish. Truly a masterpiece from cantillon.

One of the very few times I've ever thought "holy cow that is beautiful" when I poured a beer. Big fluffy pink head on rose-colored beer. Head dissipated fairly quickly without lacing. Nose had that classic Cantillon funk, but was not overly horsey or odd like some wild yeasts can be. It was funky but fresh and not overly powerful. Flavor was, of course, sour, dry. I was surprised the fruit didn't come through a little stronger (beer was fresh from the maker about a month and a half ago). Fruit lent more of a tart acidity with a dry cherry nuance. Mouthfell was right on. Full carbonation without feeling like soda pop, like a fine champagne. Overall, a classic.

Hazy light ruby red with cute pink head.

Nose displays aromas of cherry marshmallows and candybar wrapper.

Palate hits you with a whopper of lambic sourness that delights or makes you want to dump it out, depending on preference for the style. Once you're past the Biblical sourness, the cherry is more obvious, and the creamy mouthfeel is appreciated together with the carbonation.

An amazing lambic, and a must try for Kriek lovers.

Cantillon Brewery is a wonderfully place to tour and highly recommended. I feel I have a heightened appreciation for their wonderful beers after my visit, and I wish them all the success that life can bring.

Their kriek is a wondrous thing. My past issue with the style is that its either been too sweet, too artificial or both. This kriek differs completely, however, tasting both authentic while eschewing sweetness. This is hinted at in it sumptuous bouquet, which smells like tart cherries mixed in with a great dose of funkiness. From here on out, the funk is behind the wheel, drying out the cherries, keeping the sweetness in check and providing the perfect background for the fruit to shine. And shine it does! there's absolutely no doubt that some damn good cherries enjoyed their maceration in Cantillon's lambic, and who wouldn't? This wine coloured beer, with its frothy white cap pushes the borders of drinkability to new levels.

Excellent in every aspect.

Bottled 2010. I love a bottle of beer with instructions on how to serve it. I will follow them religously. Thank you Cantillon. More people should be like you for multiple reasons.

Ruby red pour with a pink head that would be more than suitable for rainbow brite. Quite effervescent.

Dark, tart cherry and raspberry fruit nose. Hints of oak and brett funk.

Tasty, delicious, tart, dark berry fruits on the tongue. Soft carbonation slides evenly across the tongue like a lubed up armadillidiidae on ice. With tartness to boot. Very well balanced and just fun to drink.

Poured into a tulip. Bottled (May 27, 2011) drank (May 9, 2013). Gave a nice spritzy pink head, receded relatively quickly leaving some light lacing. Colour is a rich cherry read, with lots of visible carbonation. 4

S – sour cherry, viney-ness, macaroon?, bakery sweets in anycase, some macerated sweetness. Honey cake, smoky chestnuts, a definite full yeastiness, slightly toasty (with cherry jam on top obviously). Very interesting, with well-integrated subtleties making a very characterful aroma. 4.25

T – A thoroughly mesmerizing experience. A balanced cherry sourness, a lot of fruitiness coming through, with light biscuity maltiness and an underlying macerated sweetness. A pleasant earthiness, almond, farmy hay, with a pleasant ‘meaty’ yeasty character, some blood orange. Sourness is not as intense as I might have expected, more of a deliciously balanced tartness. Yet it remains refreshing and very full on the palate. 4.75

M – Pleasant and light, with an upfront tartness, pleasant refreshing carbonation, but a full body of balanced sour cherry flavor that coats the palate, finish leaves a coating cherry sweetness, almost filmy on the palate, lingers on nicely, vineyard character. 4.5

My first Cantillon and the best lambic-style I’ve come across, I think that’s because the sourness is not as intensely in-your-face, this offers a balanced, intricate tart, semisweet flavor profile, with amazing feel and complexity. A work of art in every sense, this will definitely entice me to try more from Cantillon. 4.5

Cool little pink head pour, thin head. Delicious sour cherry aroma, real fruit in the nose, not fruit juice w/ sugar added. Smell the funk (good funk).

Taste, quite sour, just like I like 'em. Cherry flavor is not thick, nice and spritzy with the sour. Slightly sweet. Not balanced, in a good way. Bitter and acidity might be a problem for the less learned palate, or simply if you're just not into this kind of flavor smacking sour. You get a bit of everything here, good barrel tinge, great sour, great fruit, even with time on it, still tastes fresh, not one dimensional at all.

Mouthfeel, the slightest wood nuance is noticeable. Very dry finish to this. Sour cherry flavor is the best cherry flavor most often.

Reddish pink with a pinkish white head. Nice legs, nice spotty lace.
Smells intense-- oaky, cherries, little funk... Huge sour smell.
The taste is spectacular. Light sweetness up front with sweet cherries before turning nice and sour with a dry finish.

The feel is nice and light with a tart and sour bite that pulls in my cheek and dries out my tongue.

Overall-- spectacular. Just awesome.

Presentation: 750 mL corked and capped bottle poured in a Smuttynose tulip glass. Bottled on January 12, 2010.

Appearance: Pours a nice two finger, pink, fizzy head. Ruby pink in color. Leaves a nice lacing throughout and plenty of effervescence.

Aroma: Definitely a lot of barnyard funkiness upfront. Grass and musty notes really stand out. Background notes of lush cherries. The tart notes really don't assert themselves too much here, but there are a couple in teh background here.

Taste: Big acetic, tart notes immediately upfront. Lush cherries really start to work thir way in next. The cherries compliment the sourness great and really provide a nice sweetness throughout. Background flavors of funk and barnyard, along with a touch of oak and vanilla. Nicely balanced.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with really spot on carbonation. Everything stays light and refreshing.

Drinkability: I finished a 750 mL bottle by myself, but that may be a tad much for most. Definitely exceedingly drinkable for a lambic.

Overall, a really solid, flavorful, crisp, and complex interpretation of the style. Everything is executed extremely well. Definitely a top notch sour I would get again. The cherries used in this really provide a nice contrast and range for the fruit. The sweet notes are incredibly lush and full, while it still contributes the necessary tart character. The fruit is still really there after a year on this as well. I'd be curious to see how this evolves over time as the fruit is my favorite compliment.

My first sample from this brewery...

It pours from the capped and corked(2007) 12oz bottle a cloudy light red colour with a small head of foam that breaks up quickly to just some spotting with some lacing/

The smell is super sour at first..nothing else hits my nose but after a few more whiffs, I can smell some cherry presence. Good nose for me, yeah.

The taste starts off the same as the smell..sour to the nth degree, especially up front. More sips in and the cherries, be they black or be they red, add a bit of sweetness to take a small bite out of the tartness, and there's a underling earthiness dealty out by the malt and that works well for my palate. Very well. Towards the finish is where I mostly notice the fruit; not over powering like the Kriek from Lindemans, which I consider more of a fruit beer, but defintely there and adding kust the right flavour to keep this Lambic more true to style.

I think it's still light bodied but very close to medium, the carbonation is lightly but rightly done, and, being a fan of brews that travel into the land of sour, drinkability for me is in the upper stratosphere. This is one tasty and fabulous brew! Thanks again, Joe!!

During the past few weeks I have been really zoning in on exploring Lambics. I was excited to pick up this 12 oz bottle for $6.80 at Colonial Spirits in Acton, MA.

I opened the bottle and let the beer sit for about 20 minutes and then poured away in my champagne flute. Pours a vibrant shade of light red with pink colored highlights. Wispy thin lacing for a head.

Explosive aroma with whiffs of funk and sweet fruits.

Highly acidic, raw and sour with an authentic cherry appeal. The mouthfeel is spritzy and intense as it takes control over my taste buds. Hints of apple cider vinegar and raw cherry juice blend together to make an impression on my palate.

The drinkability level is rather high as my palate is on heightened alert.

I guess this is what Lambics are all about. Incredibly magnificent and marvelously complex.

Had this one last night, split with my girlfriend. It has an amazing aroma and appearance as it's a super carbonated dark red. But from the first taste, it's kind of petrifying. It's definitely the most tart beer I've ever had, and the sourness of it really brings out the intensity of the cherry. It's a really striking beer, and after my face unwrinkled from the first sip I probably laughed for a good minute. It's fun to drink, fun to share, and an awesome blend.

A- Pours a beautiful garnet/grapefruit body with a light pink head that fizzles quickly. Lively carbonation (cork shot out and nailed my chandelier).

S- Extremely complex. Right off the bat, picking up some tart, acidic, sour cherry. Followed by the perfect about of funk/earthiness. Swirls reveal sweeter cherry notes and oak. Also picking up some red wine/tannin.

T- Starts sweet, cherry and lemon zest upfront. Transitions to a more acidic, dry funky cherry taste. Finishes with just the perfect level of tart/sour on the tongue.

M- Again, active carbonation, but not too overbearing. Works with the tartness of the cherries, not against it. Not nearly too sweet, which is a common shortcoming of many beers similar to Cantillon Kriek. The dry body and finish is superb.

D- At 5% abv this beer is extremely sessionable. Quite refreshing too, would be great on a warm summer day. Paired great with mussels in white wine/garlic and oil.

Thanks to snaotheus for bringing this bottle back in his luggage from Belgium! Poured into a goblet from a corked and capped .375.

Color is hazy ruby with a thick pink champagne-like head that dissipates fairly quickly. A very beautiful beer in the glass. Smell is funk, tart cherry, and oak. Taste is very tart, almost puckering at first. Cherry flavors and oak flavors combine to give this a really great balance. Body is fairly light with a lot of carbonation. Overall, a great beer.

Poured from a 375ml bottle, dated 14 February 2011 (makes me realized I should have saved this one for Valentine's Day).

A: A cranberry red with a thick, pinkish head that mostly dissolved after a minute or so.
S: The sour cherries stand out the most, followed by some cinnamon, wood, and that trademark Lambic smell.
T: Sour cherries again (emphasis on sour), but with a reserved mix of sweetness and tart on the finish.
M: Very bubbly and medium-bodied.
O: Greatness in a bottle. Love the balance of this beer — a must-try for sour fans.

My first Cantillon beer EVER! Pours a Beautiful red with a nice pink head. Once this beer was corked, I got SO MUCH cherry scent. I love cherries, and I got a TON! When the beer was held up to my nose, I still got a lot of sweetness followed by tons of funk and sour notes. The taste is surprisingly sour cherry (the cherry is so obvious). Followed by amazing sour flavors. The mouthfeel remains tart and crisp with amazing drinkability.

Poured from a bottle at the brewery in Brussels while on tour there 3 days ago by Madame Cantillon, Granddaughter of founder of Cantillon brewery. Poured into a snifter type clear glass with "Cantillon" written on the side. Met fellow named Dan from the U.S. while sampling this beer.

A Slightly cloudy body, the color of cherries, minimal light pink head. Nice look, true the style and really unique.

S Vinegar, medicinal even to the nose, like cherry cough syrup. Certainly a different kind of smell but inviting none the less.

T/M Strong cherry tartness, like the kind of fresh cherries. Gone was the medicinal and vinegar like sensations that the nose suggested. The taste has a nice smooth finish as well and the whole beer is rather "soft" in feel.

D I could drink many of these in a sitting.

Notes: I have not had hundreds of Krieks but this one is easily recognizable as the best of the ones that I have sampled. Mature, confident in its presentation, reflecting the true tartness of a Cherry.

Appearance: Poured with a small light pink silky head that dissipated quickly to a ring around the top of my glass. The beer is a hazy dark rusty red color.

Smell: Funky raspberry, a small sweet berry flavor, then a big tangy sour, nice earthy spice, and slightly musty.

Taste: Tangy sour, lightly sweet raspberry, big sour dry bite, like almost ripe raspberries, a little watery/light though.

Mouthfeel: Nice sour pucker, nice carbonation, followed with a nice dry feel. Overall a little watery though.

Overall: Great drinkability, more than just sour flavors including sweet berry, earthy flavors, and a nice musty spice. Great flavors and aroma, but a little watery at the end which takes away from the beer a bit.

Sometimes a beer goes too sour and the fruit can can difficult to really identify and appreciate. And sometimes the fruit comes through but the sour is downplayed and it doesn't mesh. This beer doesn't have either problem. Just the perfect tart cherry flavor that just couldn't be any better.

Bottle says '12 FL. OZ', but looks like a 375 ml to me. Bottle date says 01/12/10, but the cork says 2009. One for now, one for later (much, much later).

Pours a deep hazed red with orange/brown highlights into my tulip (I got the second half of the pour with a bit of the yeast that I tried to decant). Lovely two-fingered head receded to a 'stick-around' crown. Looks royally elegant.

Tart cherries, wet hay, horse blanket, sour citrus, lemon twang, good bit of Bretty funk. Clean and vigorous.

Big sour bite comes loaded with unripened cherries and fruit skins. The funk is tangy with a grassy rustic tone. Picking up some fresh pomegranate berry, plantains, lemon rind, slight metallic character that is not off-putting, vinaigrette, and blades of fresh grass. Big sour finish with an appropriate level of bitterness. Very dry and puckering.

Fizzy, medium-bodied, high-carb. Wet and easy. Wonderfully crafted.

You gotta try it with some of the yeast in the pour. A satiable beer that was better than the cleaner pour I got at Monk's Cafe in Philly. A high-end sour. Would love to try the Lou Pepe. So happy to have had this again.

Pours a dark rose color with some off-white foam that fizzed up to maybe a quarter-inch before reducing to a ring of tesselating bubbles. Clarity is very nice. Very slight haze.

Tart and bright cherries, acetic acid, bretty funk, tints of lemon and straw, unripe raspberry, and white wine vinous qualities. Exceptional.

So bright and sour and acetic. These were very young cherries when picked, but there's loads of light fruitiness and tangy tartness that pairs well with a pungent barnyard funk and the bittering piquance of the oak barrel itself. Sourness is a cross between lemon rind and white vinegar. Has that woody Chardonnay bite that is near-perfect. Such a lively beer. Extraordinarily complex for a kriek.

Medium-light body with some great-feeling sourness. Carbonation has good life to it. The feel is lovingly friendly to the flavors absorbed by the palate.

Glowing ruby hue with a slight murk. Thin, soapy, but steadfast, strawberry cream colored head leaves wisps of lace. Overripe, juicy cherry with pungent, Penecillium like cheesy must hits the nose initially. Woody, damp cork and vinegar soaked sweatsock hints surface after a deliberation. Intense, yet inviting aromawise. In flavor, sharp acetic tartness coats the palate upfront. Rounded woodiness of an old oak bark like nature ensues, bringing both gentle tannins and subtle vanilla hints. Sweetness is only of trace, apple skin and restrained citric, lemon undertones. Meaty, leathery, enteric underbelly merges with ethereal wild yeast tones to lend a wet horse and saddle impression. ...But it is so good. Well attenuated, bone dry, and parching. Paradoxically thirst inducing and quenching like all top notch lambics. Softens considerably as it breathes, with balmy lactic notes emerging and carrying through the gentle cherry tinged buttermilk finish. A delicious, truly world class lambic. Seemingly more balanced than most. Unparalled in drinkability. I would easily consume at least a gallon of this tart, restorative elixir. Big thanks to AKSmokedPorter for the delivery!

2012 bottle, poured into a Hill Farmstead stem.

Pour: Bright, radiant red with two fingers of both half fizzy, half fluffy pink head. Leaves mild lacing, and remains and a ring on the glass. Body is really glowing.

Smell: A hay funk up front, followed by some funky cherry skins. A definite lactic aspect. Some light pears. Nose goes out with raw cherries and funk.

Taste: Nice clean cherry tartness up from, followed by a light lactic sourness, and funk. Funk carries the body, along with a nice bready sweetness. Finishes tart with cherry skins, pear juice, and hay.

Mouthfeel: Exceptionally drinkable. Cherries are not too sweet. Sourness is perfect. Great carb.

Overall: I think I enjoy this better than the Lou Pepe Kriek I had. Have to keep in mind that was a 2007 (sticker) vintage, so it would definitely be more sour.

From a 375ml bottle my brother picked up in Belgium, bottled 11-27-2014.

Appearance is a hazy, pink-red color, capped by a thin pink head that has a mild amount of retention with low lacing.

Smells are of cherry fruits and white grapes.

On first sip, I get a very prickly mouthfeel from the full carbonation. Then flavors of cherry become apparent, both fruit and a bit sour. The finish is quite dry.

Overall a splendid lambic I am glad to have tried!
