12 ounce cork and capped bottle - Bottled in 2008, according to cork. As per directions on the label, it was allowed to "breathe" for just over a half hour before decanting. Decanted slowly into a Belgian tumbler, with any yeast sediment left in bottle (also as per the directions.)

Pours red with a pink head that fizzles to a small, slowly vanishing, patch.

The smell is of fresh cherries - very tart - with a barnyardy horse-blanket funkiness.

The taste is of sour cherries - strong tart - with some vanilla sweetness. The cherries taste very "real". A funky character adds to the complexities. Finishes dry with a long finish.

Light-bodied, but not thin - towards effervescent.

The cherries stand out without overshadowing other complexities. Powerful, yet drinkable, stuff regarding aroma and flavor. Very tart in an enjoyable (though puckering) way.

Bottled January 12, 2010 and consumed April 29, 2010.

The beer pours a nice red color with a pink head. The aroma is heavy on the cherries with a slight hint of funk. The flavor is regular cherries, tart cherries, oak and a little bit of wildness/funk. Still, the fruit is the main attraction of the beer at this point. Medium-high carbonation and medium mouthfeel. This beer could use some more age on it but I wanted to give it a try as soon after bottling as possible to see how the cherries were when fresh. I have another bottle I am aging a couple of years and look forward to trying it again.

75 cl green glass bottle with branded pry-off cap over an internally-housed branded cork purchased at Cantillon earlier today and served into stemware in my hotel room in Brussels. Reviewed live. 5% ABV confirmed. Bottled 24 March 2014. Expectations are quite high given the brewery. "Kriek 100% Lambic Bio." Reviewed as a kriek.

Served chilled and allowed to come to room temperature over the course of consumption. Side-poured.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Pours a one finger wide head of pink colour. Nice thickness and creaminess. Retention is above average - about 3 minutes. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.

BODY: Hazy grapefruit red. Murky yet translucent. Nontransparent. Appears clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Appears aptly carbonated. Looks good for a kriek overall; I'm craving the first sip. The head and colour could be better but this is solid.

AROMA: The cherry notes aren't as full, evocative, and present as I expected having had Lou Pepe Kriek earlier today, but they're nice, with some interesting tartness and befitting fruity sweetness. The sourness in the aroma is more restrained and tame than I'd like, but it's nice for what it is - seemingly a 5/10 in terms of sourness, but nevertheless redolent of wild lambicus yeast and a bit of bacterial character. The fruit is unmistakable, but not as impressive as it could be.

Lacks a noticeable hop presence, alcohol presence, or off-note aroma - all of which are good things to lack.

It's an inviting aroma of average strength, but I crave more cherry, more sourness, and at least a bit of oak/chestnut wood presence from the barrel. Naturally though, I cannot wait for the first sip. Very pleasant and seemingly refreshing.

TEXTURE: Wonderfully smacky on the palate. Smooth, wet, refreshing. Excellent medium body. Apt thickness. Has an excellent overall presence on the palate and just enough softness to keep it approachable in spite of the assertive sour notes. Not overbearing, heavy, hefty, or too weighty. Perfectly carbonated. This texture is an ideal companion to this taste. Brilliantly executed. Wow.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, or rough on the palate.

TASTE: The sour and tart cherry notes are a highlight here, and are just fucking wonderful. The lambicus yeast is perfectly suited to the cherry notes, and evokes a wonderful sourness accompanied by wild bacterial notes. Cherry skin abound. This beer is the dog's bollocks. Flawless balance, brilliant subtlety, great complexity and intricacy, excellent nuance, and superb integration of flavours. This is a gestalt flavour profile with an excellent build. The dominant fruit and sour notes work well together and would please even the most discerning of drinkers.

No overt hop flavours are detectable, nor is any alcohol. I don't find any off notes.

Constructively, more of an oak or chestnut wood presence might help the beer, as might more sourness; as-is, it's about a 6-7/10 in terms of sourness. The lightly palate-stripping acidity is lovely, and complements the flavour profile beautifully.

I'm loving this beer. Execution is excellent.

The subtle fruity sweetness right on the finish closes out the lingering sourness in a lovely way, which makes one crave the next sip.

O: I'll have to have Cantillon's Lou Pepe Kriek again, but I will say this beer is an achievement. It's rare you encounter a beer of this quality, and this one solidifies Cantillon's position as a world-class brewery. I'd absolutely have it again - hell I'd probably pay American prices for it - and I'd definitely put it up there with the best krieks I've ever had. Damn good stuff from Cantillon, and worth all the praise it receives. Wow. I look forward to enjoying the rest of this bottle alone. Perhaps Cantillon's best (relatively) easily available offering. Almost effortlessly drinkable.

Drink fresh. I can't see age making this much better.

A soft pour into my Cantillon globe glass (what a sexy glass) produces an almost two-finger thick, lightly pink tinged, off-white colored head. The beer is brilliantly clear and a rich cherry color; when held up to the light it shows some touches of gold in its pale ruby depths. The aroma is fantastically tart in a very smooth, appetizing way. There are ample funky notes of urea, medicinal phenolics, musky barn animal notes, crusty old sweaty leather aromatics as well as freshly curing scents of leather. There is a bright fruit note that is just noticeable at times, it hints at cherry aromatics, but then becomes fleeting and disappears underneath the tart and funk when you go in for a deeper inspection.

Perhaps not quite as sour as I was expecting, but this is exceedingly sour as a nice ripe Cantillon should be. Bone dry, but still manages to have just a hint of viscosity to it; some tannic oak notes help to boost this perception along with a palate lingering light astringency. The texture is also helped by a solid, though not aggressive carbonation that adds some zip to this beer as it rolls across the tongue. My second sip sees me noticing a faint, but fleshy, cherry note that is more tart than anything, but does capture that slight floral note that cherries have; it almost tastes like a succulent flower of some sort (hints of hibiscus and maybe some faint rose like flavors are found here as well). The acidity is all Lactic in character, with not perceived acetic character at all. The perception of the acidity softens as my palate gets used to it, though this remains uncompromisingly sour throughout. It also ends up with a hint of sweetness (perhaps more perceived than actual), which helps to accentuate the cherry flavors that have by and large aged out over the years. Oak flavors of wood and light spice are a touch more noticeable than I usually notice in a Lambic, but still play only a minor role in the flavor.

A second pour sees this getting a touch hazed, with a corresponding yeasty note to the aroma. The yeast follows through in the flavor adding a touch of richness to this brew; though the oak seems to add to the perceived richness, in what is otherwise a light, quaffable brew. Musty enough to make me thing of cobwebs and damp, moldy cellars, plus there is a muskiness that adds a funky flare

Mad props to my friend KM for dragging this beer, along with the sexy, brewery glassware back with her from Amsterdam; it wasn't new to me, but damn a bottle of aged Cantillon will always be received with wide open arms. Simply a fantastic bottle of Lambic, I wish I had hundreds of Lambics in the cellar as I would drink these all the time. Age has definitely removed the bright cherry character here, but I like the soft, sort of floral note (hibiscus and rose really are really apt descriptors) that this has turned into. Cantillon once again achieves a level of complexity and balance (assuming you can get past the bracing acidity) that I have come to crave; no one does it better when it comes to the bugs and time.

Only lightly carbonated, it struggles to produce a thin pink head. The beer is very clear, and is a deep cherry red color. The aroma is sour and musty with notes of vinegar and wood. The first taste, as usual with Cantillon products, is shockingly sour. It is bone dry, and as such it is hard to pick out the cherry flavor at first. It is here though; there is a cherry meat edge, which complements the acidity of this beer. It adds a certain fullness and a tannic backdrop. The best I can describe the cherry character is that of a meaty-cherry flavor. The Lambic character contributes lemon, vinegar (though only slightly), musty, funky mushroom and perhaps a bit of leathery horse-blanket brettanomyces character.

This beer is much better when fully carbonated, but the complexity of this beer is such that I am not at all disappointed in the lack of carbonation. This is certainly a challenging hard-Lambic version of a Kriek. Lambic neophytes beware, there are no syrupy cherry notes here. Overall quite delicious and refreshing.

Sampled at the Brewery, 2001:
The Cantillon Kriek has a sweet cherry nose to it. Not as sour or hard as some of the other Cantillon offerings. This Kriek has a definite cherry skin taste to it, a tannic edge that carries through the finish. As expected from Cantillon this beer is not sweet at all, quite bone dry in fact.

02/07/06- Purchased at Plumpjack's in San Francisco, CA.

Presentation- 750ml bottle, wrapped and corked. Not sure what year it was from. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

Appearance- Took off the cap and there appeared to be a brown liquid that had seeped out. Smelled and it smelled very much like vinegar. Was preparing for a drain pour. But...poured a wonderful crushed cherry dark red. Almost blood red, had a nice 3/4 inch rose colored spritzy head and had average lacing.

Smell- Didn't smell at all like vinegar, thank goodness. Didn't catch a bunch of funk like I was expecting from a traditional Cantillon. Some, but not equal to some of the others. There was a really nice fresh tart cherry scent though. Strong cherry and nothing else.

Taste- As most do..starts out tart and finishes even more tart. Cherry orchard flavor with a mild hop bitterness. Just truckloads of fresh and sour cherries.

Mouthfeel- Tart, tart and more tart. Doesn't burn my gut as much as others did though. Light carbonation turns to none once you get into the heart of the beer.

Drinkability- Probably the most drinkable Cantillon beer I have had to date. Great flavors and a pleasure to drink.

750 mL bottle, 2005 Vintage, shared with my brother and his girlfriend, my cousin, my sister and her husband, picked up at the Total Wine in Glendale, AZ,

A: Pours an attractive pinkish red, light head, no lace.

S: Classic Brett aroma/horse blanket, cherries, pomegranate, lactic acid.

T: Opens with a burst of delicious lactic acid. Heavy lemon, with the essence of the cherries. They're there, but they've been completely fermented out. The fruit, as light as it appears in the finished beer through the beginning and mid-palate, jumps out to give a great finish surrounded with the acid.

M: Quite acidic, but not rough at all. The acid makes the body with a slightly sweet finish, moderate/high acidity overall. Perchance I wanted more acidity to give it a 5?

D: This frankly is fantastic beer. Delicious, incredible lactic acid and funk flavours, that just begs another sip to be taken. I went through this so fast, the acidity and fruit flavour were to die for. My brother opened up a bottle of Mersault at the same time, and while I love White Burgs and it was a good wine, the difference in overall complexity between the two was striking and clear in the Cantillon's favour for something that was half the price. A must try if it's available. About as perfect as a fruit lambic gets, I think the age is well apparent in the complexity of this beer.

75cl Green cork and crowned bottle. Bottled 30 Aug 2007, poured down my sink 7 Aug 2008.

Opened for friends during a Belgian beer evening. Nearly lost a couple of friends that night.

This is one nasty, sour puss of a Lambic. Some modern more commercial Lambics are very sweet (to try and get the youngsters interested), this is at the other end of the scale, in fact it is off the scale completely for sourness.

I have visited the Cantillon Brewery in Brussels and I have tried to like/embrace this style of brewing, but I can see why it is struggles in the modern world.

Try it by all means, but please don't claim it is a wonderful drink.

Poured into a mini pint at TJ's 7th anniversary party. A rare treat on-tap that can not be passed up.

A - Pours bright red with spotty head leaving no lacing at all. I think this was one from the bottom of the keg.

S - Plenty of sour notes up front. Hints of cherries, oak, and plenty of funk permeate everything. Fairly subtle but still very nice.

T - Strong tartness up front slowly giving way to some tart cherrie puree. Finish is strong tartness with plenty of strong cherrie notes. I really like this one a lot but it gets to be a bit overpowering after about half a glass.

M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Tart finish that fades quickly. Quite pleasant

D - Pretty good. I liked this one a lot. It was tart but still very complex. I have a bottle of this in the cellar, can't wait to see what that does with some age on it.

375 mL green bottle, corked and capped. Vintage date of 2008 printed on the cork. Poured into a wine glass.

As soon as the cork is popped, a potent palate crippling aroma of sour and funk hits the nose and my mouth immediately begins to involuntarily pucker. Color is a bloody orange/grapefruit color, fairly murky, yet clear against light. Head is a light pink, bubbly and light, that quickly fades to a medium thick cap with a splotchy film. The strong aroma is dominated by earthy and musty notes, no room for artificial sweetness, just some mild tart cherry. Otherwise barnyard, earth, funk, must, etc consume the aroma. Flavor begins with a touch of deceptive tart cherry fruitiness before deceptively and monotonically increasing in sour funk, by the finish turning your mouth inside out and leaving you salivating from the dryness. Mouthfeel is soft, lightly carbonated with an endlessly lasting sour finish. Ridiculously sour, but still with some interesting real fruit undertones and musty, funky earthiness. Not a beginner's lambic, or one to tackle a 750 alone, but uniquely hits the spot when you want to abuse your palate.

750ml bottled on June 23, 2011. Poured into a matching Cantillon stemmed tulip. The brew appears a hazed color of ruby with a finger and a half worth of pink froth. The cap slowly fades to a thin lacing across the top. A light swirl agitates bubbles from solution and produces some spots of lacing effect on the glass. Rising bubbles of carbonation provide a steady ring of froth around the edges only.

The smell of this brew includes the classic expected cantillon aromas. Funk and earth come across mildly like cheese mixed with a lemony lactic note. Some thoughts of stinky cheese/feet mix with earthy notes of old wood/cork and a bit of mildew. As the glass is swirled, a bit of sulfur comes forward.

The taste has all of the descriptors provided in the aroma but has a mild fruity note of cherry that is quite earthy with an over-ripe to rotten appeal. Cheese and mildew to old cork is apparent throughout. The finish is fairly clean with a bit of tartness that seems to come from a lactic almost lemony quality mixed with unripe cherries. A little bit of plastic is noted towards the back.

This is a medium bodied brew with a mild level of carbonation. It is fairly well done for the style and very much lives up to my expectations of a Cantillon offering. Very nice and tart with lots of funk. Wouldn't have it any other way. Solid. The 5% abv is perfectly integrated in this. The more I drink it, the more thirsty it makes me.

Pours a dark ruby red color that's completely opaque with a half finger pinkish white head that quickly settles into a thin, lasting ring. Spotty lacing left behind.

Musty, funky aroma with a strong barnyard character that gives off hints of dry oak, horsebkanket, cobweb and wet earth along with uber fresh cherry. Sweet sugars, fruit skins and cherry pit but the nose is dominated by the funky bugs, oak barrel and lactic notes.

Tart and puckering with the perfect amount of sour acidity balanced out by sweet fruit sugars. This is a recent vintage so the cherries really stand out with an almost dessert/pie like flavor but the sweetness is excellently balanced by earthy barnyard funk, dry oak and acetic vinegar. Very dry and tart throughout with earthy oak, lactic and acetic funk, and a lingering vinegar-like flavor in the finish that has me salivating for more. Aggressively sour but never too harsh or solvent like because of the freshness of the fruit. Again, I'm picking up the skin and pit of the fruit which adds complexity while complimenting the sour, earthy funk flavors. Not a beginner sour/Lambic but I find it delicious and pretty easy to drink.

500th review! 750 ml bottle into tulip, bottled Aug 28 2007. Pours fairly clear blood red color with a minimal thin red head with surprising retention. As I swirl it small bubbles slowly cascade to the top. Some nice spotty lacing clings to the glass as well. Aromas of big sour and tart cherries, cider vinegar, wet hay, funk, oak, yeast spices, and big acidity. Fantastic aromas with great strength. Taste of big tart cherries, light cider vinegar, hay, barnyard funk, oak, and light yeast spices. Extremely tart cherry finish, that turns into a puckering sour acidity after the finish that lasts on the back of the tongue. Lingering notes of cherry, cider vinegar, oak, and light spiciness on the finish. Light carbonation and medium bodied; with a lightly syrupy mouthfeel as I was expecting. High acidity limits the drinkability, but this is incredibly enjoyable to sip on. Alcohol is completely hidden as expected. Overall this is an outstanding Kriek lambic with a ton of great tart cherry flavor. If it had more carbonation it probably would have scored even higher.

Appears a hazy, light pink with an orange with a small, white cap that quickly fades out. Tiny spots of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of funky rubber, tart cherries, and vanilla.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with tart cherries, vanill, oak, sugary cream, light caramel, funky citrus.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, tart, and bordering a vinegar sourness.

Beautiful 750ml green champagne bottle. Corked and capped.

Big red viscous opaque body with a very fine frothy head of pale pink bubbles. Incredibly krieky, full of fruity looking insanity.

Cherry acidity on the nose. Smells extremely sour, lots of oaky notes as well, very heavy, with underlying hints of vanilla. Very rank. Very extreme. Love it.

Wow, it's even more intense on the palate. A huge puckering sour character, with a residual cherry flavour. The sour character sticks around so long that it ends up like a woody bitterness. Almost like a acetone note, it's that intense. Really intense, extremely, extremely sour - probably the most highly acidic beer I've ever had. The cherry is just an afterthought. Lambic rules the roost here. Mouthfeel is delicately effervescent. Lovely.

This is severe and extreme. A serious lambic, for those who like their lambics sour, raw and crazy. They mean the 100%; this is all lambic all the way. I love it - turn up the volume on these wild beers.

Poured into tulip glass.

Pours a small light pink hued white head that fades away rather quickly. No lacing. Color is a bright raspberry/rhubarb purplish red. Very nice looking color.

Aroma: very tart fresh cherries. Very sour smelling. Has the 'horse-blanket' funk smell to it as well. Reminds me of American wild ales.

Taste: Right off the get go, I get the horse blanket sour taste. Very funky and sour. Tons of tart cherries. Wow, this beer is incredibly sour and fantastic.

Mouthfeel: bitter tart, sour, mouthwatering, refreshing. Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Ends with a clean aftertaste.

Really, there isn't too much to not like about this beer (unless you don't enjoy sours). I think it is fantastic. I have a feeling my 750 will take me awhile and be hard to finish, but I think it will be doable. Great beer.

Had a bottle at the Farmhouse in Emmaus, PA. Poured a beautiful almost clear red with a short pink head. The aroma had a subtle musk with a tart cherry note that also permeated the flavor. This beer tastes like a mellow-flavored, though no less tangy, lambic with a drop of tart cherry juice in every sip. The farmhouse elements are more subdued than usual and frankly I dont think this beer is as rich and tasty as a straight up oude geuze. But I will say, this is a gorgeous looking beer.

2010 vintage 750 ml split with my wife

A: Cherry red with a pinkish, purple head that soon turns white, fades quickly leaving minimal lacing.

S: You can honestly smell this beer from several feet away. Tart cherries, wild yeast, and that distinctive Cantillon funk of which I have grown so fond.

T: Remarkably smooth and incredibly sour, if that makes sense. Tart cherries are the dominant taste, with notes of yeasty bread, cherry pits, nuts, dirt, grass, trees (a general outdoor aroma & taste). Very tasty.

M: Low carbonation, puckering sourness.

D: Overall, a great beer. I highly recommend it. Anytime we open a Cantillon is a good time.

Been waiting to try this one for a while.

A: The pour was bright cherry/pink/red with a massive pink head, about 2.5 fingers in height. Decent retention, reducing down to a thing layer of foamy bubbles on top. Little bits of lacing stick to the glass.

S: Lots of tart cherries, the aroma intensifies as the beer warms up. It was a bit closed when I first poured it, but at the end was very fragrant.

T: Tart cherry, a little bit of cork, and a little bit of barnyard funk, but the cherries really dominate, with not much else going on.

M: Light to medium bodied, nice carbonation. Slightly mouth puckering, but not overly sour.

O: A little bit of a let down. Its good, but I was expecting a more powerful and complex flavor profile and maybe a bit more sourness.

Served on tap at the Devil's Den, I have not had this in two years, and the last time I had it on tap was six years ago at Monk's

100% looks great a bold blood soaked red with active bubbles rising. The head looks just like the liquid in color and reaches a finga and a half with tightness, not much lace but who cares.

Smells include 100% kriek cherries, they are really pronounced and up in my grill. A very small medicinal scent thats an afterthought. Some oak and vanilla and a pleasant sour vibe. Not as earthy as other Cantillons, barely and barnyard or hay.

When I had this out of a 2 year old bottle it was the most sourest beer I've ever had, this must be a fresh keg cause the sourness is subdued compared to that. Cherries, oak, vanilla, Cantillon.

Thin bodied with active carb and a nice sourness that is quite puckering.

If this was not 9 bills a glass I would be all over this, this young keg is much more drinkable than an old bottle and more to my liking
