Cork Dated 2001:
Extremely astringent, superbly sour, very sharp with hints of bitterness. A truly Classic Gueuze, often regarded by many as a benchmark example of its style. A beer style that does polarize drinkers. You will Love it & want more - or Hate it, & spit it out. Apart from the Gueuze-Vigneronne (also Cantillon), it would be my chosen desert island beer. Jean-Pierre Van Roy of Cantillon tries very hard to create authentic lambic beers, & he has excelled himself in my opinion with the Gueuze. Beer can be lively (hence the reference to Gueuze as the Champagne of the Beer world) - do not stand over the cork when pulling, have your glass ready - you have been warned! Improves with age. Try and find older examples with the blue and white Mannekin Piss pictured on the labels, as opposed to the colored brew-kettle on recent years bottles. Can I give this 6 out of 5?!

750ml – Old Style Black Label – Cork Dated 1996.
A brilliant murky fluid, which has an orange cloudy hue. Served in a dry flute glass with minimal carbonation, white, but very tight thin bubble head. It resembles a flat Hefeweizen after a short time.

Has all the nasal beauty of a herd of damp unsheared Sheep, you know the ones that have shit stuck to their matted back ends. Liquid farmyard effluent traces, wet straw, hay-lofts, rotten soaking oak casks, old wooden barns & crap stained muck-spreaders.

Incredibly dry, impressive yeast dominant astringency, with a massive acidity that fights every drop of saliva in the aural cavity. It decimates the mouth & creates an arid wasteland. The sourness has lessened over the years. Dehydrated cheeks are powerless to defeat the “you-know-what-is-coming-next” aspect. The Cantillon mouth-pucker. I am sure I swallowed my own mouth at least twice.

Drinkability – More Please…….

Geeeeee-zuss – DON’T drink this if your lips are chapped!

A WORLD CLASSIC that just gets better (worse?!?) as it gets older.

Kudos to EyeChartBrew for supplying this dirty whore of a lambic.

2013 bottle

A: pours murky golden orange. small white head

S: Smells like farm animals and hay, plus a massive funky sour

T: sour and acidic, after taste is a little fruity

M: bubbly, crisp, and dry

Overall: I am not an expert on this style, but it seems like a very solid gueuze. Great representation

A: Poured into a Cantillon flute glass this would be the first time I’ve had the gueze away from Belgium. The head quickly dissipated away and showed bright white in color with tiny white bubbles. The beer is a golden yellow with moderate clarity and no lacing or sediment (on the first pour).

S: Big aroma of funkey brett character – straw, hay and basement dust. Tartness in the aroma with zesty lemon (not like pledge but fresh juicey lemons). Light oaky woody aroma that blends naturally with the funk.

T: Huge bright sourness that is not for the faint of heart. Lemon candy and citrus tartness. Funky horse blanket, oak and hay. No hops. No alcohol. Nothing but beautiful and pure sour and funk. Very well balanced – nothing overwhelms but it has a very powerful flavor profile for a 5% beer.

M: Light crisp finish with mouth puckering sourness. Carbonation is moderate to low with no harshness or alcohol warming.

O: I feel like this beer is the sum of its parts, Yes its very sour and has a good amount of funk but combined with the bright aroma and perfect and approachable mouthfeel, it makes this beer fun to drink and you always go back for another.

Appearance - Poured into a flute glass. Not a long lasting head, but very white and bubbly -- similar to champagne, and very typical for Cantillon. Quite active, but quickly fades, showing signs that this is still a very young beer. Slightly amber in color compared to other brews by Cantillon. It's clear that more of the malted barley is being showcased here, versus the wheat (also described on the label).

Smell - Rich honey, lemon zest, sourdough bread, musty grapes, pear, aged cheese, fermented cherries, coriander, subtle lavender and various other floral notes.

Taste - Strong lemon peel, pepper, straw and marigolds, coriander seeds, extremely grassy and sour. Musty and dry. Beautiful hay, wheat and honey notes all blend into a whopping sour crescendo. It's amazing to know there is no sugar added, only the natural enzymes and sugars extracted from the mash. Barley is prevalent over the wheat in flavor, especially in its coloration. A super clean, dry hop profile helps to round out and clean up everything near the end, leaving the mouth to pucker.

Mouthfeel - A little under-carbonated, but keep in mind, this is still a young bottle, and according to the label, can be aged to 2030 with a proper cellar. Crazy for only a 5% lambic.

Overall - Very, very nice. As always, Cantillon delivers. For a straight ahead Gueuze/ Lambic that does not rely on additional flavoring of spices and fruits, this is a work of art and shows that Cantillon is one of, if not THE best brewery making sours today. Simple in its approach, yet somehow resulting in extreme complexity. I have but no choice to age a few of these little babies.

I had this for the first time on draft at the Publick House in Boston earlier this year. This beer is amazing and has turned me into a gueuze/sour beer lover for life!
A: Cloudy; yellow, golden color; weak head
S: The nose had a bit of banana bread with cloves along with farmy/musty qualities
M: Medium body, low carbonation
T: Don't let the sweet aroma fool you, this is a sour beer! Once you adjust to the sour, there are notes of unripened green apples and pepper/spices.

Would love to trade for this beer!!
