750 mL bottle. Bottled: 2 February 2012

A: Pours a sunset yellow color with a fingers worth of head that lasts surprisingly long (at least in terms of gueuze)

S: Nice and tart with a bit of funkiness. Lighter fruits come through as well as an oaky woodiness

T: Starts off with a bit of a puckering sour followed quickly by a refreshing tartness, subtle horse blanket, and light fruitiness. Oak finishes it out, along with a lingering tartness

M: Medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation

O: A classic gueuze indeed. All the quality and flavors you would expect out of any gueuze are there as well as great drinkability for a sour beer. Obviously a little pricey, but definitely worth the $15-17 for a 750 mL bottle. A must-try for any gueuze/sour lover

Appearance: Peach colored; cloudy; small head that dissipates quickly

Aroma: Tart, sour citrus smells

Taste: Sour, tangy, lemony start; dry mid, with dry finish

Appearance- Doesn't pour up a whole lot of head- about two fingers worth- but I did pour it pretty slowly. The head was pure cotton white and dissipates almost instantly. The body is light amber/hazy grapefruit- very hazy. It glows a very light orange when held to the light

Nose- Very dominant aroma as to be expected from a Belgian lambic. Strong sour notes alongside spicy yeast and hints of funkiness which sample earth and barnyard. The sour notes reflect tart apple, raspberry, peach, and several citrus fruits- orange, lemon, and tangerine. Notes of cherry and strawberry as well.

Taste- The beer, of course, follows the nose and responds tartly reflecting many of the flavors of the nose. However, it is not as tart as the aroma and relies upon the funky notes of the aroma to give it more structure. Straw, funky cheese, and a light spicy yeast bitterness work to give this beer an interesting interplay of flavors. Deep citrus, deep red fruits, stone fruit work against grass, straw, funk, and yeast. At the moment, I think that I prefer Oude Gueuze Tilquin a l'ancienne but this could change. It would appear that this beer is fresher and that might have some part in my opinion. Earwax notes come out that I don't think that I noticed in Tilquin come out. As far as fruit goes, this is all over the place. Tangerine, lemon, cherry- practically any strong brash fruit you can think of. This is certainly not as tart as I remember Tilquin being. This is favorable to my personal taste buds but in terms of the style, can go either way. Strong hints of vinegar and a delightful vinous taste. Orange peel, sour cherry, tart apple, vinegar, grapes, yeast, straw, grass, and earth are the strongest aspects in the flavor profile. Some saltiness comes out and this is becoming more and more lip smacking.

Mouthfeel- Light bodied with with the crisp refreshing qualities of a light sparkling white wine. Not as dry as I remember Tilquin being. This may be an advantage. It's head retention certainly is not.

Drinkability- This is so easy going for a sour. As far as the lip puckering tartness others have mentioned goes, I don't see it. I imagine the lactic fermentation builds so that this becomes more sour as it ages.

Overall- Definite A. I have no problem spending 11 bucks for a beer like this. It's a must try unless you don't like sours.

look: 5 | smell: 5 | taste: 4.75 | feel: 5 | overall: 5

Appearance: slight haze, gold color, small white head

Aroma: bittersweet fruit, milder acidity on nose than the pure Lambic, sour notes

Taste: musty, barnyard like flavor, less acidic than 15 month pure Lambic, sour notes on finish

Mouthfeel: medium body, medium carbonation, prickly on the palate

Overall impression: a mellowed version of the 15 month Lambic with sour and acidic notes toned down. Also with the addition of the 3 year Lambic, it achieves that musty, barnyard flavor that is so desired in a proper Geuze.
